Award Winning Herman Miller Ardea Desk Lamp

Herman Miller's Ardea office desk lamp just won both Gold and Silver honors at the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) for 2010. IDEA has been around for 30 years, and provides accolades to products that excel in the areas of form, function, packaging, and eco-design, and usefulness. The purpose of the Ardea desk lamps is to be beautiful, functional, and ecologically friendly. It starts with a nature based design that designer Yves Behar indicates as being included by the heron bird. Like the bird, the lamp has an elegant neck with a graceful twist and has a flexible head and based hinge. It is able to be pointed in any direction with easy, and lower and rise at the user's will. The base can be removed, and replaced with a table side clamp as well. Ardea was designed for use mostly in offices, but can really function at work or home based desks where task lighting in necessary. It was further designer to have a low energy consuming bulb. Price for the Herman Miller Adrea desk lamp is $379.

The Less Lamp: Lighting That's Customizable with a Pickaxe

The Less Lamp is perfect if you have a contemporary decor scheme and are looking for a stand-out piece that's truly your own. Shaped like a large suspended egg, the lamp is delivered as a solid black oval sphere that must be punctured and broken in order for any light to escape. And it conveniently comes with a small pickaxe made especially for the job. Looks like a lot of fun but you'll want to plan carefully and not overdo it -- you can always add more holes but you can't take them back if you crack the whole thing in half. Available at the Moma Store for $875.

Eden Design XXXLamp is Your Own Private Idaho Sun

Eden Design's XXXLamp, designed by Bart Lens, is "inspired by the shape of a Chinese lantern." Unlike a Chinese lantern, however, the XXXLamp is more than five feet high and 13 feet across and comes with an equally grand philosophy: with lamps becoming "space defining," the idea is that instead of submitting to the walls of a room, you enter the area aglow and defined by the lantern yet "still retain a sense of the surroundings beyond the boundary."

If you're still with us, the XXXLamp is built in twelve segments so that you can hang just a half or a quarter of the lamp and use mirrors for additional effect, or have the interior panels printed on. It is suspended by a framework similar to that on a hot air balloon and fitted with three white light fixtures, or a suite of variable colored LEDs whose hues can be controlled remotely.

Eden also provides a note on hanging it, if you're already sizing up your salon: fix its lower edge at about shoulder level, so that you duck to enter the illuminated area and, according to the image, um, stand there and read. The XXXLamp isn't on sale yet, but is being prepared for retail markets and will probably have a price tag as impressive as its diameter.

The 'Ray & Stevie' Pendant Light

We've covered light fixtures made of sunglasses before and although it's an idea that will never fit it with my home's decor I must say the concept is growing on me and I especially like this 'R&S' (Ray & Stevie) pendant light by J.P. Meulendijks. The design is incredibly simple, consisting simply of 18 "reservoir dogs" sunglasses arranged into a circle. The result is an interesting piece of art and, when you turn it on, fun sunglass-shaped shadows on the walls and ceiling. Available in both black and white the lamp goes for just over $200.

Celebrity Lamp

It's amazing how something so common and simple like a classic pair of aviator style sunglasses can be the inspiration for a gaudy (but still strangely attractive) lamp called the Celebrity Lamp. Named after the many celebrities who are more often than not spotted in public wearing their favorite shades, this lamp is made up of 40 pairs of mirrored aviator glasses resting on a shiny linear stand with a temple light switch. It's a shiny silver sculpture during daylight and becomes a kaleidoscope of color and light when turned on at night. Like I said, gaudy but strangely attractive... $1,600.

Polaris Floor Lamp, Designed by Marco Acerbis

The Polaris Floor Lamp is more like a piece of art than a lamp. Made of lacquered nylon that has been rotationally molded, it's a modern, clean piece that would work well in a corner or next to a bed or sofa. The lamp pivots, "revealing a different fluid vertical form on its satin steel footprint base." No fancy bulbs required, just one 300-watt halogen bulb (included). For atmosphere, use the floor dimmer.

A 2008 design by Marco Acerbis for Fontana Arte, it's available in glossy white, glossy black or glossy amethyst (aubergine/eggplant). Retromodern.com sells it for $1,840 (a 20% discount from the list price of $2,300). Measures 11.8" W x 76" H. Delivery in 2-4 weeks.

Siddhartha Pod Lamp

Today, my friend Art Donovan from Donovan Design out in Southampton, New York sent me pictures of his latest design. This new lamp is his first in a style known as Steampunk. Steampunk combines modern technology with a style sensibility taken from the Victorian era. The new lamp is called the Siddartha Pod Lantern and Art reports that is it the most labor intensive lamp he has ever worked on. He spent several months designing and creating the lamp from solid bass, copper and mahogany. It is over four feet tall and signed and dated, engraved in brass at the top. The lamp sells for $23,000.

Contemporary Suspension Lights from Kundalini

If there's one thing I always go for it's delicate sparkling lights in bunches -- half the reason I like Christmas so much is because of Christmas lights suddenly being everywhere I look. So obviously I'm loving these Contemporary Suspension Lights from Kundalini. Individually each orb is nothing special really, but in a group they have a truly unique and beautiful impact. Made of cast glass and chrome-plated metal these lights will certainly bring a festive sparkle to your home on a year-round basis.

Dahlia Wall Sconce

Inspired by the mathematics of nature, this unusual sconce reflects more than light. When mounted on the ceiling or wall, shadows are created on the surface behind, resulting in an eerily beautiful image of flower petals. Even when unlit, the white polyamide shades makes a stunning statement, especially when arranged in a group. Designed by Janne Kyttanen, the sconce measures 12.5" diameter by 6.3" deep, is wired for European outlets and use Halogen bulbs. $980.

Nicolette Brunklaus Large Delight Shade

These crisp white shades hide a pretty little secret - when lit, the gorgeous pattern shines through creating a whole new look. Subtle on the outside and stunning on the inside, the shades come in black, blue or red and measure 16.5"h x 43"w. Recommended for use with a bulb no brighter than 60 watts, they will certainly make the area above your head most delightful. $797.

The Zettel'z 5 Light

The Zettel'z 5 light will not only illuminate your home or office, but it will also provide a conversation piece and interesting focal point because you can actually do some reading while admiring this lamp. It's made up of 80 sheets of Japanese paper hung in such a way to disguise the bulb inside, diffusing the light in an interesting way. Designed in 1997 by Ingo Maurer, 49 of the paper sheets are printed and 31 are blank, and the rest of the lamp is made of stainless steel and satin-frosted glass. £571

Sputnik Floor Lamp

This is one of those pieces that needs careful placement in the right environment to look right, but if you achieve that it could really be an interesting addition to a room. It's the Sputnik Floor Lamp, and its satellite-inspired look is sure to be a conversation starter. It has 24 chrome arms, some with chrome spheres on the end and others with light bulbs. I'm curious to see what it looks like turned on because it seems like it might need a shade? That's going to be a lot of light -- I hope it comes with a dimmer switch! 173cm tall, £255.

Colorblock Hanging Light

Some great reasons to drink more wine, if you were looking for some, are these Colorblock Hanging Lights. Designed and made by Jerry Kott of recycled wine bottles (he cuts them apart, puts them back together, and polishes them) they're bright without being obnoxious, stylish, functional, and good for the environment because they're made of recycled materials -- what else can you ask for in a lighting fixture? Each hanging lamp measures 17"Hx3"W, is priced according to the number of color blocks, and is custom made to order. $190-$310

Giant Anglepoise 1227 Limited Edition Lamp

Whoa! That lamp from the Pixar movies has gone AWOL.

I would love to have one of these, and no it's not the PIxar lamp on a rampage. It's a special edition Giant 1227 Anglepoise Lamp in celebration of the 70th birthday of the original 1227 Anglepoise Lamp. This one is three times the size of the original and has an aluminum base, joints, arms, and fork. It comes with a halogen reflector bulb and castors with locks for easy (but safe) positioning. Black, £1,660.

Blow Table Lamp

The Blow Table Lamp: Here an otherwise fairly unremarkable table lamp gets a stylish and artsy upgrade simply by sticking it inside a glass bubble. What is it about glass domes that make whatever is inside so much more interesting? This lamp has a modern and functional appeal, and comes in a few different styles and sizes. And the best part about table lamps, their flexibility, remains intact -- you can control the position and angle of the lamp by moving an attached magnet that sits on the outside of the bubble. Crafty crafty! By Studio Italia Design, $1200+
