Luxe Lingerie from La Perla for Valentine's Day

Luxe Italian lingerie brand La Perla has something for everyone this Valentine's Day, from its latest haute couture collaboration to the traditional luxury classics the brand is famed for. As we first reported earlier this year the famed firm, founded in Bologna in 1954, teamed up with French designer Jean Paul Gaultier on a vintage-inspired capsule collection for the fashion-forward. Prices for the limited edition range from $600 - $1,200. Equally appealing are La Perla's classic creations (above), many of which are made with ultra-luxe leaver's lace. The name "leavers" derives from the antique looms used to create this lace in an extremely complex and costly manufacturing process. La Perla uses the original looms as they're the only machines capable of working with a high number of threads, reproducing the intricate work of handmade lace. Jean Paul Gaultier Designs Luxe Lingerie for La Perla

Quirky French fashion maven Jean Paul Gaultier has collaborated with luxe Italian lingerie brand La Perla on a sexy new collection of retro-inspired underthings. Available as of November with prices ranging from about $600 for bras and panties to $1,200 for more intricate pieces, the costly collection will include corsets, bustiers and other items designed to enhance the body's curves. Black and powder pink dominate the color palette along with a few coral and baby blue pieces. "In my latest prêt-à-porter collection I revisited the conical bras and corsets worn as outerwear," Gaultier notes. "Lingerie is part of my core beliefs and my heritage. It has been nearly 30 years since I created my first corset dress. This collaboration was a natural and logical step, especially since La Perla is the pearl of lingerie, with the best savoir-faire." Two limited edition pieces will be presented on July 7th during Gaultier's couture runway show in Paris.

Luxe Italian lingerie brand La Perla has put together a sexy collection of Valentine's Day gifts, presented in the form of a narrative photographed by Bjorn Iooss at Robert De Niro's plush Greenwich Hotel in New York. La Perla's rich tradition dates back to the 1950's when the company's founder, Ada Masotti, started making corsets for wealthy Italian women. Since then they've branched out but costly lingerie is still the core. La Perla's Valentine's Day story goes something like this:

"The La Perla woman makes the effort, but makes things look effortless. For Valentine's Day she wants to look her best and makes sure she takes care of her man. On Valentine's Day, she reserves a suite at the Greenwich Hotel, complete with a view of the New York harbor and a cozy fireplace. She buys several sets of La Perla lingerie, and takes her time to prepare so everything is just so. She then awaits for her man's arrival and presents the ultimate Valentine's gift - herself."

Lux Tip: Fancy Underwear

As any sophisticate knows, every layer of what you're wearing contributes to how you feel. Many people love the comfort of a cashmere sweater or a silk camisole, and many people also like to have a secret under their clothes.

Wearing an unusually fancy or sexy article of underwear will instantly give you a confidence boost. All day long, you'll smile as you remember what nobody knows you're wearing. And you don't have to pay La Perla prices to get this feeling (though if you can, you should; La Perla is exquisite).

One great source for sexy underthings at a bargain price? H&M. H&M has underwear for men and women. The materials may be cheaper, but the styles are lovely, and mostly under $10. Keep an eye on their sleepwear, as well; occasionally a sweet-dream-inducing nightie makes it to the rack for a guilt-free price.

It's just another easy way to make life more lux for cheap or free.

The Frida Kahlo Bustier

First the tequila; now the underwear. Italian lingerie company La Perla introduces the Frida Kahlo bustier, a limited-edition piece inspired by the Mexican artist. Only 50 bustiers were made; each one is hand-embroidered and decorated with Swarovski crystals. Buyers can find the bustiers at La Perla's New York City store on Madison Avenue. Price: $3,400.
