Sarpaneva Korona K0 Watch Is Finnish Avant Garde Diver

The last brand I though I would see a fully functional diver watch was from Sarpaneva. From fame based on a particularly sardonic looking face on their moon phase indicators, the dark Finnish brand brings us the Korona K0 Dive watch. You can see one of their limited edition Korona K3 moon phase watches here. The K0 will be in titanium and 46mm wide, quite thin at just 10mm thick actually. While the iconic moon phase won't be there, but the look of the case, uniquely cut dial, and hands are pure Sapraneva. The movement is a modified Soprod A10 automatic. Sarpaneva modified it a bit to make the crown operate to rotate the inner rotating diver's bezel. This removes the need for a second crown to rotate the inner bezel, and the watch even still retains a 200 meter water resistance level. Pretty neat idea, and I look forward to checking it out in action. Strap is going to be a clean black rubber one, to help keep focus on the interesting case and dial. The whole thing is topped off with a 1.5mm thick sapphire crystal and a decent level of lume on the dial. It isn't a "game changing" dive watch, but it is an interesting and welcome addition to the brand. Available starting next year.

Sarpaneva Korona K3 Black Moon Watch Wins Good Design Award, Again

Easily the most distinctive moon phase watch out there today, Finnish watch maker Sarpaneva's Korona K3 line of watches have just been given more international acclaim. The watch cases are 44mm wide and utterly unique in character. Very edgy and dark with a designer twist. Stepan Sarpaneva is inspired by the long and gloomy Finland winters in the design of his timepieces. The mostly dark tones conceal mythic tales about world as told through aspects of European lore. The large moon phase disc itself has a highly expressive face that isn't happy or sad, but rather purposeful in its aura.

Very much a manufacture style watch, they use modified automatic Soprod A10 movements. The dial has been skeletonized like a web, with the main features of the watch all being transparent. The case is either in steel or DLC coated black while the movement can be had in various different metal tones. One of the coolest features is the face of the moon again visible on the rear of the watch as located on the automatic rotor.

The Sarpaneva Koronoa K3 watch collection won the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in the past, but has now also won another Good Design award by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. This award was given specifically to the pictured Sarpaneva Korona K3 Black Moon limited edition model. A very impressive timepiece, it is limited to just 20 pieces. Keep watch for more fascinating horological creations from Sarpaneva.

Sarpaneva Korona K3 Black Moon Limited Edition Watch

Sarpaneva is Finland's only mechanical watch maker, but if their success is any indicator, I expect to see more watch making out of Finland soon. Just released is this Limited Edition Black Moon version of its unique Korona K3 watch line. With an incredibly interesting skeletonized faced and a character-rich moon phase, this is one of most interesting watches from an independent maker available today.

The emphasis on the large moon phase display with its serious face relates to a deep connection between the moon and mythology. The always intriguing waxing and waning orb in the sky has inspired imagination over the span of human existence. While we see the light side of the moon most, there is an equally large dark side of the moon. This play on the human frame of reference to the moon from Earth is at work in Stepan Sarpaneva's artistic expression in the Korona K3 Black Moon watch.

Only 20 pieces will be available, but other versions of the Korona K3 moon phase watch are available. The 44mm wide watch is in steel coated with a black diamond coating. The dial uses steel and gold. Powering the watch is a modified automatic mechanical Soprod Caliber A10 movement. For more information contact Sarpaneva directly as they have a limited retailer network.
