Bulgari to Cut Jobs & Close Stores as Profits Plummet

Filed under: Jewelry, Timepieces, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Famed Italian jeweler and luxury goods firm Bulgari plans to cut jobs, close stores and pare down its collections in the wake of a disastrous 45% drop in profits. The company, which was founded in 1884, has seen its watch business suffer badly in the economic downturn, with sales plunging 10.6%, Vogue UK reports. Accessories dropped 1.5% and jewelery, the company's core business, dropped 2.5%. On the plus side, perfume sales have increased by 12%, perhaps an indication that consumers see fragrance as a relatively affordable luxury. Sales in America and Europe were particularly poor, though the Middle East was up by 9%.

The company, a red carpet favorite of stars like Halle Berry, Keira Knightley and Kate Hudson, describes its jewelry as "pure luxury obtained by means of daring combinations, precious materials, purity of design and meticulous attention to detail." "[This year] will be a very difficult year," states Bulgari CEO Francesco Trapani, adding that future earnings are impossible to predict. "We don't feel able to give a number of any meaning because the situation is so very complicated." He is no doubt feeling somewhat overextended on the retail side with over 230 locations worldwide.

Lux Q&A: Hip Hotelier Gregory Peck

Hip young hotelier Gregory Peck (right) is causing a stir on the New York scene with his new boutique property, the Cooper Square Hotel. The Carlos Zapata-designed 21-story white glass tower, which embodies Peck's concept of beautifully-rendered "Downtown Luxury," is slated to open at the end of the month. The Cooper Square features an urban oasis of a garden, multistory bar, library and screening room; Chanel recently threw a party there for Keira Knightley's new movie The Duchess.

Peck, 34, (no relation to the actor) is also the founder of the Crescent Hotel Group which owns the Crescent Hotel in Beverly Hills and the Crescent San Francisco, which is currently under construction on Union Square and will open next year. He spoke to Luxist about his unique vision and where he thinks the hotel business is headed:

Why are your hotels better than the competition's?

Well, first of all we don't simply try to be better than other hotels. We have a strong point of view on the type of experience we want to provide our guest and that varies from property to property, but always with the goal of trying to entice the senses while insisting on highly personalized service and always stressing having people feel a deep sense of comfort. And we want people to enjoy themselves; that sounds obvious but I think some hotels put their image and form ahead of simply creating a culture within the hotel that encourages people to enjoy their experience in a casual sort of way.

We accomplish all of this really the old fashioned way - hard work. It starts with intense planning up front. We spend a lot of time developing a unique concept and a narrative for what we want the hotel to be and then we execute it, painstakingly focusing on ever detail of the process. We think of each project differently, trying to understand its market, the environment, the people who will stay there and the experience we want to create.

What makes your projects stand out in particular?

Hopefully a few things - one is we want people to simply recognize that we operate at a high level, that the design is beautiful, the service is very personalized and the entire experience works. We want people to understand that we are passionate hoteliers. Otherwise, I think our overall personality should come out in the properties. That's really about there being a sense that we are down to earth, and we want ourselves and we want our guests to have fun, and we want everyone to feel pampered by people who are more life friends than servants.

Where do you think the hotel business is headed?

I think you are going to see more people like us doing innovative projects. People in this country in particular are sophisticated enough that they are demanding more special hotel experiences than what is offered at the flag properties. There will always be people that seek the comfortable in what they are familiar with at the flag properties but there is a whole segment of culture that wants something that is more emotional, something more enjoyable. Currently, I think that only 3% of the hotel rooms in this country are considered independent or boutique, implying that there is a huge market to tap into. More and more, you will see people like us pushing to innovate in the hotel industry.

Asprey Shifts Focus, Ditches Clothing Line

Asprey, the 200-year-old London luxury goods firm, is dropping its clothing and footwear lines to concentrate on core businesses like jewelry, silver and leathergoods. WWD reports the move is part of an initiative by the company's new President and CEO Robert Procop to shore up the historic brand. As we reported previously, Asprey changed direction in 1996 when the company was sold to Prince Jefri of Brunei. Its gunrooms were shuttered and additional clothing and accessory lines launched in an attempt to make the firm more fashionable. Gorgeous actress Keira Knightley (above, in Asprey designs) was subsequently hired on as spokesmodel.

Bid on Keira Knightley's Atonement Dress

Filed under: Apparel, Auctions, Celebrity Shopping, Charity

It was perhaps the most memorable fashion moment from a movie this year, the bottle-green evening dress worn by Keira Knightley in the Oscar-nominated movie, Atonement. The dress is worn during the dramatic scenes between Knightley and James McAvoy. Designers have been copying this dress since the movie came out but if you are a size 2 you can wear the real thing. Clothes Off Our Backs is auctioning off one of the dresses made for Keira Knightley to wear during filming (multiple dresses were made because the dress is delicate). The dress being auctioned off was made under the supervision of, and has been authenticated by, Jacqueline Durran, who is nominated for an Academy Award for her costume design of Atonement. Last time I checked bidding was up to $3,200 with another 19 days left to go in the auction. Proceeds will benefit The Children's Charity of Southern California.

How Much Would You Pay To Have George Clooney's Hands On You?

The fun thing about the Get Hands On Campaign of celebrity handprinted T-shirts from James Perse is seeing which celeb handprints are bringing in the most money on Charity Folks. The high-ticket item for the auction which benefits the Revlon/UCLA Women's Cancer Research Program is a shirt from George Clooney. Clooney's pink paw prints are currently trading at a brisk $1,000 easily outpacing the king of tiny T-shirts Simon Cowell who floats in at a distant second of $330 but is still far above Paula Abdul, Randy Johnson and Ryan Seacrest (who was going for $85 last time I checked). Bargain shopping? The T-shirts from actors in the cast of "Scrubs." NBC's Hoda Kotb and comedian Carlos Mencia are bidless thus far but we've still got over a week to save them the shame of making unwanted T-shirts.

If you simply must have Clooney, you can also donate $45 to the Entertainment Industry Foundation and pick up a limited edition version of handprints done by George Clooney, Samuel L. Jackson or Keira Knightley.

Will Posh Get Keira's Necklace For Her Birthday?

Another year older already? It's time yet again for the birthday of Posh Spice, otherwise known as Victoria Beckham. The Beckhams are infamous for their lavish birthday fetes and this year is no different. Last year they partied in Paris, this year Victoria is having a Japanese-themed party at the Beckham manse in Madrid. The walls will be covered in Japanese silk and chefs from Nobu will prepare the food which includes lobster tails served in martini glasses and exotic fruits and sorbets. But the big news is Victoria's gift. Rumor has it she will be given a copy of the necklace that Keira Knightly wore to the Oscars this year. The massive vintage collar which drips with diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds has been said to cost around $12 million. After the big day, the couple will enjoy a vacation in the Italian lakes area. What a way to turn 32.
