The Fashion Statement: Juicy Couture Taps Erin Fetherston

Finally, a designer -- not a celebrity -- getting tapped to design a major label!

On May 1, Erin Fetherston will start her stint as guest designer and creative consultant for Juicy Couture with plans to design the line until the end of 2011. As soon as the holiday season, 2010, you can get your hands on limited edition pieces that will no doubt incorporate the girly, fairytale-like Fetherston stamp.

Juicy Couture, as I'm sure most of you are well aware, is known for the iconic velor track suits that every fashionista donned to do everything but exercise or go to the gym. They were too nice for that! As the trend started to wane, the company was acquired by Liz Claiborne that had a deal to eventually phase out co-founders and designers Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy. The two gave up their control of day-to-day operations earlier this year.

By the looks of things, the marriage will be a good one: Both designer and brand are from California, Juicy has always been Fetherston-level girly and both appear to need the other. WWD reported that Nordstrom dropped Juicy Couture for fall and some new creative blood might drive interest again and help the brand steer clear of becoming just another corporate brand.

Juicy Couture Children's Jewelry

As kids, I'm sure that we all loved to dress up. Whether it was with store bought costumes or a combination of our parent's clothing, once the perfect outfit was before us, we were able to enter the world of make believe to create amazing adventures and fantasies. Clothing and accessories were just about having fun and looking at life with a lightheartedness and innocence. And it seems the design duo behind Juicy Couture have that same approach when it comes to children's jewelry. Their pieces are made with 14K yellow gold plated and accented with colorful cute cupcakes, glittering hearts, tasty ice cream cones and strawberries. Price: $32-$78.

Juicy Couture Leather Lock-It Worth-It Crossbody Hobo Bag, Ugly or Awesome?

The Juicy Couture Leather Lock-It Worth-It Crossbody Hobo Bag is an unusual bag for Juicy. Not only do their items typically come in candy colors, but this bag has a utilitarian, grungy, urban look we're not used to seeing from the young (13-year-old), typically girly brand.

We're not sure we love it, but we're highlighting it today because well, it's interesting. The pieced-together leather, the rough-looking logo plate, the long, braided leather toggle ... what does it all mean? Is Juicy trying to be less cute?

The Bloomingdale's description says, "Juicy Couture's studded, distressed leather crossbody hobo adds a casual influence to your fall look." Hmm. Perhaps this is intended for the college freshman who want to serious-up (seriousize?) their style for that Women's Lib class ... but really, it's perhaps not all that well-executed. It's large enough for books and all (13"W x 15"H x 5"D), but is it kind of ugly?

Also, the name -- "The Juicy Couture Leather Lock-It Worth-It Crossbody Hobo Bag" is unconscionably long. It's like they couldn't quite decide what it was themselves. The whole thing kind of reeks of "trying too hard."

After reading my colleague Rigel's post about Anya Hindmarch's task-oriented canvas totes I began to hunt for other casual shopping totes for that occasional trip to the farmer's market, antique fair or wine country visit. The Juicy Couture Leather Crown Button Key Purse is proof that sometimes good things come in small packages.

This adorable key purse is 5.25"W x 3.25"H x 0.5"D, just large enough for your ID, a credit card, and your house key -- and maybe your car key, but don't push it, and don't you go trying to get your whole keyring in there, you'll stretch out the gorgeous soft blue leather.

The amount of detail on this tiny purse is impressive, but not overwhelming. The distressed gold tone hardware brings out the warmth in the blue.

We recommend this purse for a night out with your significant other (it's likely to fit in their pocket when you get tired of holding it) or for doubling as your wallet in one of your larger bags.

Juicy & Maclaren High Fashion Stroller

Although premier brand strollers are nothing new the combination of Juicy's posh style and Maclaren's innovative design makes for a must-have in the baby department. The pink and brown stroller speaks to the fashion-inclined mom who wants her little princess to have luxury labels at an early age. With Maclaren's high standard it is not surprising to find such features as a five-point harness, removable washable seat, compact umbrella fold, foot-operated parking breaks, high performance aluminum frame, and proper weather-proof coverings. This medium-sized bag from Juicy Couture is perfect for everyday. With a logo-embossed goldtone clip lock on the front crossing the trapunto-stitched pocket, inside pockets for cell phone and other small essentials, and a heart-shaped mirror tucked inside, the smooth leather 'Hipster' Hobo handbag is fantastic. I love that the bag zips close to ensure nothing rolls out and that it holds just enough without affording a bountiful, heavy load. Plus with a ten-inch strap drop it will tuck under your arm perfectly -- another must for any bag I'll own. This $350 hobo comes in four great colors and measures 14" x 8" x 5".

I don't usually love Juicy Couture, but after months of looking for the perfect diaper bag (stylish & functional) , I've happily settled on this adorable Juicy Couture Stroller Bag. The gold accents...the signature lining peeking out, sooo haute! It's a somewhat reasonable $295, and it comes jam packed with Juicy goodies. A changing pad, bib and receiving blanket, branded with simple graphics and cutesy wording ("couture baby"). Available at Saks Fifth Avenue!

Juicy Couture Classic Leather Fluffy, Handbag of the Day

Part of the reason I love this bag is simply because the name is so fun: the Juicy Couture Classic Leather Fluffy. Although it is a little rumpled (or "fluffy") looking, all-in-all it's mostly very simple and classic in shape and it comes in just 2 classic colors: brown and black. Made of soft-grained leather with aged metal hardware, it features 2 padded leather handles attached with link chains, a flat bottom, interior pockets including one for a cell phone, dangling bead and embossed leather heart charm accents, and a hidden magnetic closure. $350

Juicy Couture Maggie Charm Tote, Handbag of the Day

I don't usually go for Juicy bags as they tend to look a little young for me, but this one is rather sedate. It has just enough accessories to avoid being boring and is large enough to tote a weekend's worth of necessities. If there is one feature that makes it noteworthy, it is the wooden block charm which adds a nice, earthy feel. It wouldn't be Juicy without the chain and logo heart charm, which is uncharacteristically understated. It has a magnetic closure on the main compartment and the lined interior features a 6 inch zipper pocket as well as two accessory pockets. Also available in chocolate. $350.

Juicy Couture It-Girl Fairy Tale Bag, Handbag of the Day

Juicy Couture's It-Girl Fairy Tale bag is so named because it features a top metal plate emblazoned with the Juicy Couture fairy tale. What's the fairy tale? Basically it's the story of Juicy's two founders, Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, who founded an empire. The shoulder bag is made of natural canvas with leather trim. It has a leather shoulder strap and a pair of leather-trimmed pockets. The bag sells for $450 which seems a bit much. The fairy tale badge seems more like an ego stroke for the founders than a fun detail.

Fur Goes Casual in Fall

Real fur has long been one of the materials of choice for the cool-weather clothes of the well dressed and the well-to-do. Even in the face of protestors, it has retained its elegance and you are guaranteed to see many women in furs out in New York City, for example, in the winter. Juicy Couture is trying to bring fur down a little, judging from the look of their Reversible Fleece Hoodie with Rabbit Fur. The cotton fleece hoodie has a drawstring hood and distressed seams, which contrast with its fur vest lining. Though reversible, even having the soft rabbit fur clearly visible does little for the look. Let's face it: you can't dress up a fleece hoodie no matter how much fur you put into it. The only question is to whether pieces like this one will spark a trend of more casual uses of fur, possibly eliminating a lot of the prestige associated with its use, or not. Price: $650.

Juicy Couture Shoes

Juicy Couture has a new shoe line that seem to be geared up to pair perfectly with the madly-popular-several-years-ago Juicy velours. The shoes are mainly casual and include several thong sandals (including some in pink terrycloth). There are also a couple of pairs of cowboy boots and these cork platforms. They are charming in a summery way but $295 seems a bit much for these beachside babies.
