Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Hosts Star-Studded Grand Opening

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

The place to be to ring in 2011? For many of Hollywood's elite, it was The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, the city's newest and most glamorous resort, which kicked off a grand opening celebration with concert performances from JAY-Z and Coldplay, plus guest surprises by Kanye West, Beyonce and John Mayer.

Coldplay kicked off the evening with a 12 song set, which included Yellow, In My Place and Clocks. To ring in the New Year, JAY-Z joined Coldplay on stage for a rendition of Lost, followed by a countdown to midnight. JAY-Z took the stage for the first hours of 2011 and was joined by Kanye West for an impromptu freestyle performance of Run This Town, Can't Tell Me Nothing and Runaway. As Kanye left the stage, John Mayer joined pal JAY-Z with his guitar for several songs, including Public Service Announcement and 99 Problems. The ultimate collaboration of the evening came when Beyonce joined her husband on stage for Young Forever. She continued to wow the crowd, bringing Coldplay frontman Chris Martin back out for an acoustic duet of her hit, Halo.

Nike's All-Black Sneakers Bidding High On eBay

When can simple black sneakers sell for thousands of dollars? When they are limited edition kicks for a good cause. Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z has teamed with Nike to create a limited edition sneaker for charity. Five pairs of Nike's "All Black Everythings" are being auctioned off on eBay as part of the World Basketball Festival, which is taking place in New York from August 12th-22nd. Each pair represents one of the five countries playing in the event: the United States, France, Brazil, China and Puerto Rico. Jay-Z is the only other person in the world with each one of the five exclusive sneakers and Nike donated the custom pairs to be auctioned off to benefit Jay-Z's nonprofit, The Shawn Carter Foundation. Bidding ends on August 22 and all shoes are already over $1,000 with the USA shoes up over $2,000.

Forbes Names the Top Earning Celeb Couples - Jay-Z Way Behind

Beyonce Knowles and Jay-ZFor the second year in a row, Jay-Z and Beyonce (right) have topped a different kind of chart; the Hollywod's Top-Earning Couples list from Forbes. Last year, the mono-household-named celebs earned a combined $162 million, but this year, they earned just $122 million. It's a recession after all.

Or is that really the reason? According to Forbes, when the couple won last year, "about half" came from "each star," whereas this year, Beyonce brought home $87 million (well over half of $162 million), compared with just $35 million from Jay-Z. Far be it from us to call $35 million under-earning, and far be it from Beyonce as well -- the couple famously never discusses their relationship with the press.

Other top earning couples include Harrison Ford and Callista Flockhart, who made bank ($65 million) with Indiana Jones and Brothers & Sisters, respectively, Brangelina, who pulled in $55 million from their film endeavors while raising six kids (and gave a whole lot of it to charity, for example, $333,000 to SOS Children's Villages -- thanks guys), and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, who made $48 million. All out-earned Britain's first couple, David and Victoria Beckham, who made just $46 million.

Come on, Posh and Becks. Jay-Z made almost that much on his own.

BR Republic Jewelry Makes Gems for Your Martial Side

London jewelers BR Republic have launched their latest line, and it's worth a look if you'd like to accentuate your inner historical warrior. On the most, well, spartan, side there are pieces like the sterling silver Spartan pendant finished with black rhodium. A couple of steps up are masks finished with rose gold and .15 or .20 ct of round, brilliant-cut diamonds.

The top of the heap is where you'll find items like the sterling silver Spartan mask ring encrusted with 1.5 ct of diamond-cut round black sapphires, black rhodium and an interior plated with red gold. That's the one Beyoncé bought for Jay Z, while she opted for the bespoke ram's head in silver, sapphire and gold. The Prodigy's Maxim, on the other hand, went for the bespoke grenade with red gold pull-out pin.

Away from the battlefield are the company's silver and sapphire star rings, which could be the best way to let someone know "Baby, I'm a...." BR Republic is stocked at Harvey Nichols in London and Justice in Bath.

An Absolut New York Evening

Before Jay-Z took the stage on September 11 at Madison Square Garden, the sponsor of the concert, Absolut vodka, hosted a reception at the Garden's private clubhouse. I accepted the invitation not only because I knew the concert would rock - and it did! - but because I was curious to find out how Absolut vodka positions itself these days.

When I started my career in the mid-1990s, Absolut was the only brand I knew to ask for when I ordered drinks with my girlfriends. But when those outings turned into dates and toasts over promotions and engagements, it seemed like there was always a new fancy or unusual vodka to try (potato? organic?). Still, in my mind Absolut remains tried and true, with that royal blue lettering and beloved clear bottle. When ordering flavored vodka, I've never asked for any other brand.

Headed to the reception, though, I realized my Absolut knowledge was sadly out of date. I could not recall what had replaced the legendary ads featuring artist-decorated bottles, the campaign that had cemented my loyalty: In high school, I plastered the pink walls of my bedroom with those ads, carefully torn from my parent's magazines.

In the comfy confines of the Garden's wood-panelled clubhouse, I quickly got up to speed thanks to Alisa and Kris Wixom, who both work on the Absolut campaign for TBWA Chiat/Day New York.

Jay-Z Hip-Hop's Top Earner at $35 Million

You gotta hand it to Jay-Z. Despite taking a 57% pay cut -- down from $82 million in 2008 to $35 million in 2009 -- he's still the Hip-Hop Cash King, according to Forbes. (Cash Queens, aka the women, can be found on their own list, which focuses on all women in music, not just in the hip-hop genre.) Diddy squeaks in as the #2 cash king, with $30 million, and Kanye West is #3 with $25 million. Both of these gents also are down several million from last year.

Many of the artists on the Hip-Hop Cash Kings list earn a good chunk of their income through licensing and endorsements, but gone, at least for as long as the economy is uncertain, are one-time mega deals in the $100 million-plus range. This is what knocked 50 Cent out of first place in 2008 down to #4 this year, with "only" $20 million.

Jay-Z's Endorsement Boosts Upstart Bubbly

Champagne sales overall are down but one brand has found that a little celebrity endorsement can go a long way. Armand de Brignac, the brand adopted by Jay-Z, has found great success thanks to the rapper's promotion. Jay-Z was a fan of Cristal until 2006 when Frederic Rouzaud, the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal was quoted in The Economist calling the namechecking of the Cristal brand in hip-hop songs "unwelcome attention." Jay-Z found the remark racist. He called for a Cristal boycott and switched his allegiance to the new brand Armand de Brignac, part of Cattier Champagne. He featured the distinctive gold bottle with the Ace of Spades logo in his video to his single" Show Me What You Got" in 2006.

Since then the brand has taken off, showing up in celebrity gift bags and becoming a new symbol of extravagant taste. The Independent reports that demand is so high that the winery could sell their 60,000-bottle production run several times over. The brand will reach its maximum production of 82,000 within three years. The Armand de Brignac Cuvees are priced from $300 per bottle and come in three varieties, Champagne Rose, Champagne Blanc de Blanc, and the Brut Gold. Luxist blogger Annie Scott sampled the Brut Gold earlier this year.

Jay-Z's Hotel Plans Fall Flat

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

At the beginning of this year, we saw the announcement of J Hotels, the first hotel from rapper Jay-Z to be located in New York City. Now as the year ends we learn that the J Hotel is not to be. The NY Times reveals that developer Charles Blaichman, who was behind Soho House, cannot secure financing for the hotel. Blaichman is now trying to rent the former Time Warner Cable warehouse after failing to raise $370 million for three luxury hotels. Hotel Chatter predicts that the J Hotel will rise again but I'm wondering if celebrity hotel projects might be doomed for the time being.

50 Cent Eclipses Jay-Z as Hip-Hop's Cash King

Forbes has just released its annual list of the world's highest-paid rappers, and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has catapulted to the #1 spot with $150 million in earnings over the past 12 months - more than double that of rival Jay-Z at No. 2.

When Forbes inaugurated the Hip-Hop's Cash Kings list last year, Jay-Z was firmly at the top. But 50 raked in over $100 million after taxes on a single deal earlier this year, the mag notes, when his stake in Glacéau (parent co. of VitaminWater) was bought by Coca-Cola as part of a $4.1 billion takeover.

This isn't to say that Jay-Z's doing badly; he recently signed a 10-year deal with concert promoter Live Nation worth $150 million. Meanwhile, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Kanye West clocked in at Nos. 3 and 4 with $35 million and $30 million respectively.

The SUV's "fresh, vibrant color" just happens to be the signature blue of rapper Jay-Z, who helped customize it. It also contains platinum dust for a bit of bling and a more intense sheen than you might find with other metallic paints. A limited number of the cars wlll be available for sale, but there is no price out yet.

Beyonce and Jay-Z Buy $40,000 Chair

Marcel Wanders is an amazing Dutch designer that has enjoyed quite a bit of publicity this year due to the popularity of his knitted/crocheted creations for the home. This past weekend, while in Miami, Beyonce and Jay-Z took a tour of DesignMiami to pick out furniture when one of Wander's newest creations caught their eye. They took home one of his knitted chairs for about $40,000. The chair is beautiful, made of white cotton and coated with epoxy resin, but that price is quite a lot for a chair - especially when, due to the unusual design, half of it isn't really there.
