After ace real estate commenter "Spectacular Bid" let me know that the final price for Topridge, a property once listed for $9.8 million, was just $2.25 million, I was inspired to head to the Concierge Auctions website to see what I could find out about other homes we looked at. Not all of the final sale prices are listed but enough are to give a look at what real estate auctions mean for luxury home sales.

Waiki'i Ranch, Estate of the Day

Today's home is an interesting case of a style of architecture in a different place. We usually see massive log cabins in Wyoming or Montana but Waiki'i Ranch is in Kamuela, Hawaii. The 53-acre working ranch includes a four-bedroom main house, a one-bedroom guest cottage and a seven stall stable. There is also a riding arena and a tractor barn. The main house is constructed of massive cedar logs, hand selected from the forests of Canada. Not a single nail was used in the joining of the logs. The house was constructed initially in Canada then deconstructed and recreated in Hawaii log by log with precise joinery, chiseled by hand for a perfect fit. The ranch has 360 degree views of the ocean all the way down the Gold Coast north and south with views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai and the mountains of North Kohala but inside you'd think you were tucked into a Big Sky hideaway . This property is listed at $18.5 million.

Michael Crichton's Hawaii, Estate of the Day

We've spent a lot of time talking about the belongings of the late author Michael Crichton lately. His art collection achieved records and his real estate is selling well too. One home in Hawaii sold in December for $10.1 million and, as the Wall Street Journal's Private Properties column reports, a second Kauai home is on the market for $12 million through Bali Hai Realty. The home is a classic 1926 plantation style estate on Kauai's Hanalei Bay, surrounded by mountains and adjacent to the beach.

The nearly 1.2 acre estate includes citrus trees and spans over three parcels, one of which is vacant. There is a two-bedroom guest cottage as well as the two-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot main house. The main house has a casual feel with low whitewashed wood ceilings, long verandas facing the ocean and a country kitchen. Other buildings include a yoga studio and a detached three-car garage.

Puako Beach, Estate of the Day

Today's estate is a world away from Hawaii's newer builds. This Puako Beach oceanfront home has never been on the market before. You can't get much closer to the water than this one which offers up close views of the ocean, turtles, whales and amazing sunsets. The home has large master suites downstairs each with enclosed outdoor showers, there are two bedroom view suites with private lanais upstairs, and sleeping loft offers more space for guests. It has been used as a vacation rental for years and was recently refurbished and upgraded with expansive decks. It is located 30 minutes north of Kailua-Kona airport and only 20 minutes from the provincial town of Waimea but seems like a world away from anywhere. It is listed at $4.65 million.
