Like Madonna: Get in Touch with Your Masculinity in Montreal

When I heard that Hotel le St.-James in Montreal was the preferred accommodation for celebrities like Madonna and Mick Jagger, I have to admit I pictured something slightly different than this gracious, historic hotel in Old Montreal. Although I knew the building dated back to 1870, and I had seen the photos of the white-gloved doormen, I think I was picturing an interior décor something along the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.

Well, there's no rock n' roll memorabilia on the walls and certainly no Love Jones room service available here. This 60-room hotel started its life as a bank, and in the late 19th century, banks were basically palaces erected to the gods of commerce, with intricate wood paneling, shiny marble floors, elaborate ceilings, creamy paintings in heavy gilt frames -- all of which was impeccably preserved when the building was renovated into a hotel, and echoed in the floors that were added to the original structure.

The feel of Hotel le St.-James is sumptuous masculinity -- the palette is a subdued, tan, deep blues, browns, a faint hunting print pattern on the window treatment, even the curving posts of the four-poster beds seem to thrust towards the ceiling with great confidence. It flirts with severity, but pulls back from it by a few soft and whimsical touches: the pure white linens, the stuffed lion (which is the hotel's mascot) which sits on the mini-bar on each room.

Hard Rock Hotel Adds New Suites Tower

Las Vegas seems to have a surfeit of hotel suites lately but that hasn't stopped the big names from bringing out new offerings. The Hard Rock Hotel has unveiled the HRH Tower Suites. The HRH Tower is an all-suite tower set to open on December 28. HRH Tower includes 359 "standard" suites, eight spa villas opening directly to the pool areas, and seven penthouse suites on the 16th floor. Guests in the new towers will have their own VIP entrance and check-in, direct access to the new casino space, luxury Reliquary spa; and Vanity nightclub.

The suites include an integrated wet bar, sitting area, and suite bathroom with cast iron tubs. Each suite in the Tower includes an AMX 12" Touch Panel music system with iPod dock with over 2,000 HRH owned songs and playlists as well as two 40" Sony Bravia LCD TV with DVD players. The seven penthouse suites include: Infinity, Nirvana, Provocateur, Platinum, Ultra Lounge, Stones, and Sex & Pistols. Bathrooms include Grohe bath fixtures with rain showerheads and six handheld shower sprays. The Nirvana Suite (rendering shown above) comes with an outside beach area with a private plunge pool and two enormous four poster draped daybeds.

The Vanity nightclub is lit by a multi-million dollar chandelier that can change color and even broadcast images and the club has two marble bars, a sunken dance floor, 50 VIP booths, an outdoor terrace including five cabanas with direct access to a sky bar and a ladies' lounge with six individual vanity stations and a full length three-way mirror with staff on-hand to fix broken nails, style hair and spruce up makeup. The Reliquary Spa has a Roman Bath, 21 treatment rooms, a private studio for pole dancing lessons and a fitness center. Rates at the tower start at $119.

Hard Rock Goes Skiing

The latest Hard Rock co-tel has been announced. The new project will be created in partnership with Intrawest Corporation at the Copper Mountain Resort in Summit County, Colorado. The project will be the first joint venture in the partnership which was announced last summer to create Hard Rock hotels at Intrawest properties. The hotel will have around 320 residences, a spa, exterior hot tubs, a restaurant, apres ski bar and a heated multi-level swimming pool with an outdoor bar. Instead of a ski butler, there will be "ski roadies" to help guests with their gear. Construction on the Hard Rock Hotel Copper Mountain may begin next year.
