Kalamazoo Edo Grill

The Edo Grill is the latest in a line of intriguing sculptural grills from Kalamazoo Grills. The design is based on the yakitori carts of Japan where skewered meat is cooked on a hot grill. The Edo has a simple zen form when not in use. The two steel panels of the top open to reveal the 18" x 24" grilling surface and controls and create ample counter space to each side. There are two control zones with a total of 50,000 BTUs and the fuel tank is concealed in the base of the grill (iquid propane is standard; natural gas is an option). It has hidden casters for ease of movement. The base price is $7,495.

The Perfect Gift for the Grilling Guy

Knowing that I'm on the lookout for luxury items, my friend Cliff told me that I just had to look at Frontgate. So I did! Now that al fresco dining season is here, I decided to peruse Frontgate's grill offerings and came upon this 405-lb. beauty: the Barbeque Grill Island, made with O.W. Lee craftmanship. The wrought iron body has a black suede finish, the feet are cast iron and ceramic briquettes are included. The cooking-related facts:

  • 540-inch square grilling area, 200-inch square warming rack
  • Rojo honed marble countertop with 1,300+ square inches of space
  • Stainless steel cooking grid and rock grate
  • Stainless steel barbeque grill w/a 14,000 BTU rotisserie w/motor
  • Storage cabinet for ingredients or tools
  • Available in natural gas or propane
Start saving now ($6,667) for the winter gift-giving season, and order early -- shipping takes 8-9 weeks, and the grill is only available online. You might be a little late for Father's Day, but if your grilling guy has a late summer birthday, you might get one in time.

The Grillworks: BBQ'ers Dream

If you can't wait for warmer weather because the smell of meat on the grill and drinks outside is whetting your appetite I'm with you. Summer is almost here and that means BBQ-ing outdoors with good friends and family. If you're the type that prefers the scent of burning wood over charcoal or gas but need some serious space to accommodate all your guests you are going to love The Grillworks. At 46" wide, 24" deep and 44" tall this monstrous grill has a unique cast aluminum wheel that allows the grill-master to raise and lower the face as they see fit depending on the height of the flames. There are plenty of built in channels and pans to catch all juices running off to be used for basting or sauces and it can even accommodate two full-sized manual rotisseries or an electric one if you prefer. Put some shrimp on the barbie and a slab o' steer while you're at it...yum. ($3,375)

Outrageous Dragon BBQ Grills

Wow. These Dragon BBQ Grills are one of those things you either love or hate right from the get-go. They're a combination of functional grill and artistic sculpture, with amazing detail. "Intense" is a word that comes to mind, and a definite requirement for owning one is being into dragons in a big way. There are three dragon grills in the collection so far, with the first one already sold for $65,000, the second premiers in Nevada in January and will be listed for $90,000, and the third remains TBA.

Viking Induction Burner

The hot plate you cooked your mac and cheese on in college was nothing like this. Check out the Viking Portable Induction burner. It delivers a fast cooking surface that uses a magnetic coil to produce a high-frequency electromagnetic field with any ferrous pan to set up a current that creates serious heat: 1800 watts (equivalent to 15,000 BTUs). Once the vessel is removed from the element or it is turned off, the heat generation stops. The burner sells for $499.95 and makes a great addition to your summer cooking arsenal because you can use it outside.

Gold-Plated Barbecue Grill

I recently posted on the Bread Breaker Two Dual-Fuel Gourmet Hybrid Grill for those serious about their outdoor barbecuing, but if that wasn't quite fancy enough for you maybe this one will be. The Gold-plated Barbecue Grill by Beefeater takes some serious bling and slaps it onto an unlikely place: a grill. Completely covered in 24 carat gold (all except for the actual cooking surfaces) you may need sunglasses while flipping your burgers, or risk getting blinded by the glare that's sure to bounce off this glitzy piece of equipment on a sunny afternoon. Complete with 6 high-output burners plus a wok burner, roasting hood with viewing window, warming rack, quartz ignition, vaporizer, and reflector system, it's designed for "those who want to make a statement with their barbecue and have the money to burn." You'll be burning about $12,500.

Well there's definitely a statement to be had here, I won't argue that...

Bread Breaker Two Dual-Fuel Gourmet Hybrid Grill

It's getting to be prime grilling season, and I think we all know somebody (or maybe it's you?) who takes their grilling very seriously. Nothing but the best when it comes to the food you're cooking, the tools you're using, and even (of course) the grill you're using.

I don't claim to know everything there is to know about grills, so I can't say if the Bread Breaker Two Dual-Fuel Gourmet Hybrid Grill is really the best, but I'm betting if it isn't it's still pretty high on the list. It allows you to cook with gas, charcoal, and wood at the same time, it has two large grilling areas with your choice of grilling surfaces for meat, fish, or griddle, built to last of 11 gauge formed-angle stainless steel, all stainless steel cabinetry/handles/knobs/hinges/hardware, industrial grade heavy-duty wheels with locking casters for easy repositioning, integrated precision thermometer, and even optional touches like your name/initials or a favorite quote built into the grilling surface, natural gas conversion, grill jacket, garbage can, sauce rack, even a wine and champagne chiller.

The whole kit and kaboodle can be made to order and shipped to you already assembled in 2-4 weeks, starting at $11,995.

Solaire Grill and Refrigerator

The 56" Solaire grill is a complete cooking system. It has an 18,000 BTU/hr. rear infrared rotisserie burner, two infrared main burners and one conventional burner. Why infrared? It offers a faster cooking time at higher heat to seal in juices. Infrared burners are also ready to grill in just three minutes. This model includes a stainless steel refrigerator with adjustable shelves and two drawers with removable stainless steel food pans. The MSRP is $16,195.

Kamado Grill

kamodoI love mosaics and so the Kamado grill immediately caught my eye. It's unique shape was created by an American pilot who based it on rice cookers he saw in Japan in the 1960s. The grill can work with wood, charcoal, gas or even electricity. It's unique shape lets it work as a grill, oven or smoker. The Kamado comes in five sizes and four basic colors but since the exterior is made up of colored tiles they can customize it to match your decor. The ceramic cooker is very heavy so once you get it you may have trouble moving it around but according to the devoted Kamado fans you will never need another grill. Prices are in the $2,000 range.

City Boy Grill

The City Boy Grill gets its name from the idea that many city-dwellers don't have room for a full sized barbecue, but the real applications for this portable grill are many. It can be taken hiking, camping, to the beach or used in the yard. The feature that makes it a standout is the fact that the grill is gas powered and comes with a gas cartridge (which can be refilled or replaced); most small grills use charcoal. This means that there are no coals to deal with, no messy cleanup and minimal smoke. It measures only 8.7" high, with a square grate that measures 7.1"x7.1". The grill is made from stainless steel and has a heat-resistant wooden handle. Price: $300.

Eva Solo Barrel Grill

A good grill is really a must-have for the 4th of July, which is one of the biggest days of the year for outdoor cooking. There are endless debates over the merits of charcoal vs. gas, but the look and quality of the grill are important, too. After all, you're not going to end up with a quality steak if you're grill can't handle the heat.

Significantly less complex than some of our previously featured outdoor grills, the Eva Solo Barrel Grill is a sleek beauty that could be mistaken for a sculpture in the yard. The grill is a classic barrel, where the charcoal (or wood chips, if you prefer) is put down into the base where a removable coal bucket sits. It is made entirely of stainless steel, including a stainless, heavy-duty grill top. You can also use it as a sort of firepit/outdoor heater after grilling. The grill itself is $560, but you can get a domed lid for an additional $120 or a jacket-like zippered cover for $51 as optional accessories.

ArtBuzz Fire Pit

Fire pits are definitely a hot item for the yard this year, literally and figuratively. ArtBuzz takes the combination of fire and metal a step further by adorning fire pits with a sharp, elegant flame design. The Bowl O' Fire fire pits are huge. Available in two sizes, one measures 19.5" deep and 37" diameter and weighs in at 150 pounds ($650), while the other is 19.5" deep, 41" diameter and weighs 175-lbs ($695). The weight isn't surprising when you consider that they are hand cut from 1/4-inch thick recycled steel. Since the bowls are hand-cut, each one is slightly different, guaranteeing that you'll get a unique piece that is also a showstopper. All of the bowls have a warm rush finish, so there is no need for any maintenance, either.

ArtBuzz also makes matching Torches by the same process, which are a great way to accent the yard, and a miniature fire pit/grill that is a great choice for cooks, or simply for those who don't have enough room for the full sized pit.

Teak BBQ Tools, Father's Day Gift of the Day

We're down to the wire on our Father's Day gifting, so today's gift idea is something that you might be able to pick up while out shopping. If not, well, be sure to include a nice card and maybe Dad will forgive you for sending his present late. This Teak Grill Tools Set is from Williams-Sonoma. It includes all the basics for grilling, like tongs, a spatula, meat fork and silicone-bristled basting brush, which is heat resistant. Each of the tools is made from a single piece of stainless steel and the extra-long handles are of smooth, shaped teak. The set comes in an attractive tool box. Pair this set ($69) with the matching Teak Barbecue Skewers ($35) and a pair of Teak Salt and Pepper Shakers ($29), and Dad will be grillin' in style all summer long.

Fuego Outdoor Kitchen Island

The Fuego Outdoor Kitchen Island is a grill, but it is so much more. Streamlined and angular, the look of the stainless-steel clad island is unusual for outdoor use, but its abilities make it even more unusual.

It features a cast iron grill surface, which can be covered with the unit's retractable lid,  with a changeable burner system that can switch between infrared, gas and charcoal fuels with ease; all of the needed connections snap into place automatically when the burner is changed. This means that you can cook a smoky, char-blackened steak on day and a quickly grilled fish with the lo-maintenance infrared burners the next. An electronic control panel allows you to regulate temperature with far more control than an ordinary grill.

The countertops on with side of the grill are hard teak, providing a stylish look and ample prep space. Both counters also conceal drawers that are a great place to keep extra knives and cooking utensils. The side of the unit opens to reveal a sliding storage drawer, which is ideal for holding bulky items. It also has a slot accessory system, so additional shelves can be added at any time, in any configuration.

The model pictured here is the "Fuego 01," but a smaller, gas-only "Fuego 02" will be available, as well, when they hit the North American market in October 2006.

[Thanks, Josh]

Tundra Grill, Father's Day Gift of the Day

The Tundra Grill is definitely a unique piece for the serious outdoor cook. It is based on a design that is used in Lapland, above the Arctic Circle, so it generates a lot of heat and can be used to multiple purposes simultaneously. The main feature is the zinc-coated stainless steel grill is the 37-inch base, which can be fueled by any one of a variety of fuels, including wood, charcoal, pine cones or brushwood. It comes with a grill rack, skewers, and three skillets at different heights (which can be swung away when not in used), that allow for frying or baking in a Dutch-oven. The smoke hood, similar in purpose to those used in professional kitchens, whisks fumes and smoke away from the chef, while also keeping the elements at bay. As you might imagine, a grill with so much cook space can be used to cook for a whole family reunion, not just your own family. It can fit two whole fish, three whole chickens, and six steaks. Price: $2,599.95.
