The Fashion Statement: Outre In at the Oscars?

Blame Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and consumer confidence: all reasons why Oscar fashion is expected to be dialed way up this year.

Hollywood actresses have suffered a fashion drought for years-showing up in any ensemble that said "conspicuous consumption" was a faux pas in the midst of economic misfortunes. But, now, as consumer confidence rises, so will the ante at this year's awards ceremony, say the experts. Colors are expected to be bolder, silhouettes more distinctive, baubles flashier: In other words, Sunday's red-carpet parade is shaping up to be a good show.

In fashion, one is always emboldened by precedent. "Artists are starting to dress much more crazy, more out there and it has a ripple effect on fashion," designer Marc Bouwer told Reuters yesterday. "While you won't see a Lady Gaga outfit necessarily on the Oscar red carpet, you will see more architectural styles -- an expanded shoulder, a pronounced sleeve. The stronger power woman has emerged, and you cannot ignore that trend."

Last month's Golden Globes, to which numerous luminaries turned out in pink, rose and pale skin tones, is always a good indicator of things to come at the Oscars. But you could see more purples, greens, oranges and indigo blues, too.

RSVIP: Three Days of Golden Globes Fetes

Over the decades, the Golden Globes got its kick-start as a boozy awards presentation where the Hollywood Foreign Press assembled to schmooze with stars. But the 68th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday was not only a giant TV production produced by Dick Clark and hosted by the acerbic comic Ricky Gervais; it spawned a cluster of starry events that made for a glamorous weekend in Los Angeles.

On Friday, at the 16th Annual VH1 Critics' Choice Movie Awards at the Hollywood Palladium, getting to my spot on the red carpet involved passing by a trailer kitchen along the back of the venue, where long tables were covered with confections decorated with tall sticks of chocolate displaying purple flowers. Yum.

At the Luxist position on the carpet, power cables crossed under the rug, acting like a de facto speed bump. Likely thanks to said cables, a well-amplified Maroon 5 jammed live in the background.

Rip Taylor, there to lampoon "The Black Swan," mentioned that to prepare for the event, he'd sent his wig out to be dry-cleaned. Onstage, he and the cast of "Jackass" would perform a skit about "The Black Swan." But, before the show, Taylor, who was holding my arm to remain steady on the bump, handed over a photo of himself in full drag as "the Black Swan" for the skit. For her part, a pregnant Natalie Portman, showing her own bump, claimed that the fun poked at the role "has actually been one of the fun things about the whole process. "'30 Rock,' 'SNL'--it's easily mockable," she said.

300 Celebrities at Golden Globes sign a Chrysler for Haiti Relief

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Auctions, Charity

When disaster strikes like it has in Haiti, it's hard to find the silver lining. But if there's one to be found, it's how people come together to lend a hand.

At the Golden Globe awards this past Sunday, Chrysler showed up on the red carpet with one of its top-of-the-line 300C luxury sedans and invited the celebrities attending to sign it. Among the 300 celebrities who put their names down for the cause included Samuel L. Jackson, Sandra Bullock, Morgan Freeman, Sigourney Weaver and Neil Patrick Harris,

The car was equipped with such eco touches as cork and bamboo interior, donated personally by Chrysler brand CEO Olivier Francois (pictured above) and was specially branded for the cause. It's is set to be auctioned at an event soon to be announced to raise funds for the American Red Cross in its relief efforts in Haiti.

The Fashion Statement: Cleavage Is Back!

.

Bazookas. Bazooms. Village-feeders (thank you, Chris Rock). Whatever you call 'em, they've been spotted everywhere on the red carpet these last few months.

There was so much cleavage at the Golden Globes Sunday night, it's as if the invitation specified "globes" in the dress code. Mariah Carey (pictured above in a black Herve Leger number), Halle Berry, Christina Aguilera and Fergie formed a committee that surely played a role in TV ratings, particularly among the male demographic.

At the Grammy's Nominations concert back in December, things were no tamer. Katy Perry no doubt upstaged an act or two with ample bosoms spilling out of a white, embroidered gown. Before that, Ciara let her boobs do the talking at MOCA's 30th Anniversary Gala in L.A. while Demi Lovato got majorly chesty at the Peoples Choice Awards, 2010.

Even the fashion first crowd (those generally prefer style over exposure) -- Nicole Kidman, Chloe Sevigny and Kelly Rutherford -- have gotten busty on the party circuit. In Sevigny's case, boobs popped out of a librarian-like sweater set and sat atop a mid-length skirt at the Prada Book Launch Cocktail party in Beverly Hills a few months ago. Kidman was all about pushing them up at the Country Music Awards last November.

Diamonds in the Rain

Sandra Bullock at the 2010 Golden GlobesThe Golden Globe Awards are a pleasure to watch, but not nearly as much fun as the preceding red carpet. It's there that we get to see the gowns, the tuxes, and, of course, the jewelry.

Whatever, dresses. Let's talk about diamonds.

The winning ladies of the Golden Globes were:
  • Sandra Bullock (pictured) for The Blind Side
  • Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia
  • Mo'Nique for Precious
  • Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife
  • Toni Collette for The United States of Tara
  • Drew Barrymore for Grey Gardens
  • Chloë Sevigny for Big Love
Now, let's have a look at their jewelry, shall we? Designers of winners' jewelry included Everlon, Fred Leighton, Buccellati, Lorraine Schwartz and Neil Lane. While we weren't too sure about all of everyone's accessories (we could have done without the costumey details on Drew's dress and drabness of Meryl's belt), the jewelry this year was stunning and demure -- a far cry from last year's statement pieces.

In truth, we miss the giant stones and enormous diamond-encrusted flowers, but we've always had a taste for decadence and excess. The good news is that for those of us not fortunate enough to buy (or be loaned) 40 carat earrings, this year's styles are far easier to emulate for a fraction of the price.

Special thanks to the Diamond Information Center.

Golden Globe Red Carpet Beauties

The rain started to fall but the stars came out for the Golden Globes tonight in Los Angeles. The occasion was marked by some beautiful gowns. Check out some of our favorites in the gallery below. Above, Kate Hudson charms the crowd in a white Marchesa bustier top with a long white skirt, white platform pumps and tassel pearl earrings. Hudson was a rarity in white, many stars wore gowns in peach, pink and purple tones and a few went with basic black. Let us know your favorites in the comments.

Slumdog Millionaire Co-Star Dev Patel Wears Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Watch To Golden Globes

Filed under: Timepieces / Watches, Celebrity Shopping, Men's Style

Wearing what is certainly no slum watch, Sunday January 11th's Golden Globes award show saw actor Dev Patel wearing a high style Jaeger LeCoultre watch. The timepiece was the Reverso Squadra, a sportier rendition of the classic Reverso watch line. The pictured Squadra watch features a chronograph and GMT complication with a big date at the top. As is common on all Reverso watches, they have the ability to be flipped around. The opposite side revealing further complications or a protective metal caseback, as was the purpose of the original Reverso watches that protected the watch crystal from the high impact Polo games.

Patel was likely given the watch personally by Jaeger LeCoultre to wear at the show. Luxury product makers often gift such items to celebrities to be worn in public for publicity and marketing purposes. Patel made out pretty well being approach by Jeager LeCoultre. More established celebrities often have brands fighting for their limited "body real estate," and have been known to offer large sums of money in exchange for exclusive deals. Don't be surprised if Dev Patel is seen only wearing Jaeger LeCoultre watches at events for the next several years.

Brad & Angelina's Killer Looks at Golden Globes

Filed under: Apparel, Events, Men's Style

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie didn't win any little statues at the Golden Globes Sunday night, but they definitely defended their title as the world's most stylish couple. While Angelina eschewed glitz in an elegant and simple frock from Atelier Versace, Brad continued his trend of wearing Tom Ford's finest when the occasion calls for black tie. He wore a black wool Windsor model peak lapel tuxedo, white pique front evening shirt, diamond and white gold shirt studs and cufflinks, black grosgrain bowtie, silk pocket square, black patent leather shoes and a pair of aviator shades all from Ford's menswear collection - and, for those of you who followed the cummerbund debate in this week's Classicist column, Brad (correctly, in our opinion) wore one of those as well, made of black grosgrain silk to match his bowtie.

Less Swag For The Golden Globes

A recent article in Variety reported that the beginning of Hollywood awards season has seen a decline in swag. The luxury gifting suites are finding less vendors eager to pay the fees and part with the free stuff in order to get a picture of a star posing with their product. Part of this is that both the stars and the vendors are not certain that this type of publicity will have the same impact it used to. To adjust to current times, vendors are teaming up with charities so that all that gifting will end up having a more positive result. This move is also designed to alleviate celebrity guilt about accepting the freebies. The Golden Globe Awards take place tomorrow night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills and a number of gifting suites are scheduled for this weekend.

One piece of swag is a definite, a gemstone compact created for the Golden Globe nominees for best actress in a drama and best actress in a comedy. The compact was created by L'Oreal and jewelry maker Carelle. The compact includes lemon citrine and pale-green quartz stones in an 18-karat yellow gold setting with diamond details. One compact will be auctioned off on eBay.com during the Golden Globes show to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

Golden Globes Cancelled but the Swag Must Go On

The Golden Globe Awards may be off but the swagfest is still on, at least in some locations. Due to the WGA strike, the awards ceremony has been replaced by a modest press conference. Variety reports that so far the NBC Universal-Focus, HBO and Warner Bros.-InStyle hosted after-parties have all been canceled. These parties can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars many of them in catering fees that have already been spent.

Even though there are no parties and no show, most gift suites are still in business. The Silver Spoon Buffet is set to take place at the Voda Spa, January 9-11 and will take take donations that will go to IATSE Local 44.

The Secret Room event will take place January 10 and 11 at a private location in Brentwood. It will include jewelry from Fileena, vacations from Caribbean Escapes, free stay and gourmet dinner at Paso Robles luxury wine brand owned Justin Wine Inn, free stays at the new boutique hotel Petit Ermitage, free stay Napa Valley Boutique hotel Napa River Inn, teeth whitening from Southland Dental Care, a day of beauty from Luxelab, skin care from Borghese, $500 in free laser services from Dr. Tattoff Laser Center, a year of free dining from Chipotle and all sorts of other gifts. Even though there is no ceremony the event will offer the usual pre-event spa services like Botox, facials and massages.

The Boom Boom Room event, a gift suite aimed at parents, will still take place at the Beverly Hills hotel.

GBK Productions will hold their annual gift suite at the new 60 Thompson Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Access Hollywood is hosting the ''Stuff You Must..." lounge on Jan. 11-12 at the Hotel Sofitel in Los Angeles.

it's unknown how many celebrities will attend these gifting suites but it's a safe bet to say that numbers will be down from past years. And I don't know what they are going to do with the customized bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne like the one shown above, which were to be served at the event.

Diamond Dazzlers At The Golden Globes

It's not an awards show without diamonds and any worries over stars not coming to the red carpet draped in jewels after the movie "Blood Diamond" were quickly dispelled at the Golden Globes awards. Big beautiful diamonds were seen on most celebs with a heavy emphasis on yellow diamonds. Let's take a look at some of the most stunning pieces of the night.

Beyonce dazzled in a Lorraine Schwartz- multi-colored diamond and old ivory bangle valued at $125,000, multi-colored Diamond earrings of a 40 carat total weight valued at $225,000 and a knuckleduster of a gray, yellow and white diamond ring with a 25 carat total weight valued at $110,000.

Melanie Griffith Sued by Designer

It looks like Jessica Simpson isn't the only one being sued over a dispute with a designer. Melanie Griffith is being sued for breach of contract by Niklas J. Palm, a Los Angeles-based, Emmy-winning designer, for $26,000 to pay for three gowns. The dresses were worn by Griffith and her two daughters at the Golden Globes and provided for free in exchange for a mention of his name on the red carpet. Not only did she did not mention that the gowns were designed by Palm when interviewed, but Griffith claimed that she designed the gowns herself.

Baby Couture from the Boom Boom Room

Filed under: Apparel, Jewelry, Celebrity Shopping

At this year’s Golden Globes, the stars weren’t the only ones walking away with bags full of free goodies from designers. Actually, they were – but not everything in the bags was for themselves. In addition to more adult-sized offerings, vendors set up a Boom Boom Room that featured lots of stuff for kids and babies.

Crib Rock Couture has updated nursery rhyme characters on fashionable logo-tees. The tees are reminiscent of vintage rocker tee’s and are styled after classic tour shirts, but with the gentler edge that only Miss Muffet can provide. The new 3 Blind Mice tee, from the “Carving Knife Tour” is especially cute at $33.

Diapees & Wipees makes fashionable bags for toting around the most important baby tools, diapers and wipes, without lugging a carrier that looks like a picnic cooler. The bags come in bright, vibrant colors and retail for $14.99.

Snugglebug Baby makes jeweled pacifier clips, which keep fashion-forward parents from losing their baby’s favorite object and lets baby start collecting bling early in life. The clips are $25.00 and come in boys and girls styles, like the Swarovski clip pictured here, with additional customization available.

Clothes Off Our Backs Golden Globes Auction

The shoes, gowns, tuxedos and other accessories from the Golden Globes awards are up for bid at the Clothes Off Our Back auction. While most of the actress gowns are a size 4, the shoes are in a wider variety of sizes. Scarlett Johansson's red Jimmy Choo shoes are a size 8.5 and proceeds benefit Cure Autism Now, Half the Sky and UNICEF's work in Darfur. The current bid last time I checked was $870.

Golden Globes Swag Fest Continues With Big Treats For Presenters

It's good to be a presenter at the Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and "In Style" have announced the contents of the presenter gift boxes for the 2006 Awards show. The boxes have a worth of over $62,000.
