The Fashion Statement: Will 2011 be the Year of the Hat?

Hats worn for the express purpose of style hasn't been widely popular since the '20s. Millinery did have a brief comeback in the '80s when Princess Diana gave visibility to the British tradition of wearing hats for special occasions. Now Kate Middleton is again putting a modern face under the British topper. And numerous designers on both sides of the pond made the hat a central focus of their spring/summer runway collections. And then there is Lady Gaga entertaining us all with her theatrical chapeaus.

Not since the '80s have we seen so many hats! So we wonder: Could 2011 be the year of the hat?

Arguably the most buzzed about accessory of the season was the colorful, wide-brimmed hat like the one above at Prada. Badgley Mischka and Marc Jacobs channeled Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver with their bright pink versions shown over hair that had been appropriately curled and frizzed. Sally Field in The Flying Nun would have fit right in at Missoni where almost every model wore hats that flapped down the runway like wings. And Alberta Ferretti went boho by pairing floppy fringed brims with her collection of gauzy ethereal gowns.

Giles Deacon Officially In At Ungaro

It's been a rough year for Ungaro but could brighter days be ahead? Designer Giles Deacon has confirmed that he is the new creative director of Emanuel Ungaro. Deacon, who was employed by the fashion houses Bottega Veneta and Gucci before launching is own line, could bing new life to the brand which has faltered a bit since Emanuel Ungaro himself retired in 2004. Last year Lindsay Lohan took a critically derided turn as artistic adviser for the brand and head designer Estrella Archs recently moved on.

Deacon, however, is optimistic. In an interview with Vogue UK Deacon expressed enthusiasm about his new line saying that it will take on a new design perspective and "hopefully we'll make it really interesting and relevant for people." His first Ungaro collection will launch in Paris in October. He describes the Ungaro woman. as very sexy, very French, chic and playful. His own designs have been colorful and a little avant garde, playing with patterns and proportion in some very attention-getting ways.

Selfridges Very Yellow Centennial

English store Selfridges is pulling out all the stops to celebrate its 100 birthday. And the iconic department store has hit a bit of luck, its signature color, the bright canary yellow Pantone 109 just happens to be one of the hot colors for spring. Selfridges has collaborated with a variety of designers to create exclusive yellow and black merchandise. Shown above is a quartet from the many offerings: bright yellow Chuck Taylors from Converse, a Marc Jacobs purse, a Giles Deacon dress and a pair of Guiseppe Zanotti heels. The limited edition collection of pieces will be available starting next month.
