Tips for Tipping

It is unfortunate that holiday tipping causes so many people anxiety. We all want to be generous but need help figuring out who to tip and how much or what to give.

The golden rule seems to be that cash is king. That being said, a small gift demonstrating that you know people's likes and dislikes is a nice touch, usually best appreciated when given in addition to cash inside a card. Don't give liquor or chocolates unless you know it is a favorite item of the recipient. If you don't like to give cash there are now gift cards for everything under the sun including, Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, gas stations, local restaurants, town parking meters and more.

There are people like your nanny, housekeeper, driver or dog walker that you may depend on everyday. In this instance a holiday tip more closely resembles a corporate bonus. Depending on their length of service, cash or a gift equal to one or two weeks of salary is the minimum and can be significantly more if they are a long term employee.

Fortunoff Stops Honoring Gift Cards

If you happen to be holding a Fortunoff gift card you may be out of luck. The bankrupt luxury goods store has stopped honoring all gift cards in advance of next week's auction of its assets. Bloomberg reports that Fortunoff is working with creditors to find a way to keep accepting the cards but there is no news on when this might happen. Fortunoff is still facing a February 23 deadline for the sale.Fortunoff has closed its Manhattan store and laid off 300 workers, although other stores remain open. Federal bankruptcy law allows companies to stop honoring gift cards after they file Chapter 11.

The NY Daily News tells the story of newlywed Vicki Georgiou, who had received $3,000 worth of Fortunoff gift certificates at her recent wedding. She spent half the total on Monday but when she went back to spend the second half later in the week she found that she could not use the cards. There is a chance that Fortunoff may restore gift card use if it is bought by another company but for now consumers are in limbo.

LuxList: Unique Gift Card and Gift Certificate Options for the Holidays

Gift cards and certificates are one of the most popular holiday gifts. And why not, they are easy to get, easy to use, and save you from buying something the other person doesn't really want or need. The only problem with gift cards is that the average gift card to one of the big stores can sometimes seem a little impersonal and well, boring, for both the giver and the receiver. One solution is to head off the beaten path a bit and pick an unusual gift card or certificate. It's a little riskier but it's also exciting to buy something for someone that they would never choose for themselves but would really enjoy.

One fun option for men and women is getting them a gift certificate to race car driving school or to rent an exotic sports car. There are a variety of these types of options around the country. In New York for example, Gotham Dream Cars offers gift certificates that let you rent a Ferrari, Lamborghini or other cars or even take their Dream Car Tour that lets you try out six cars from a Bentley to a Lamborghini Murcielago in one fast and fun afternoon. The Dream Car Tour costs $895.

The need for speed can be best satisfied safely on a race course. L.A. Racing at the Irwindale Speedway outside of Los Angeles offers a variety of programs that get you out driving a NASCAR stock car at Irwindale Speedway on the 1/2 mile 12 degree banked oval. Many race tracks across the country have similar programs.
