Rare Racers at Ferrari Event in Nurburgring

An incredible array of Ferrari race cars just converged on Germany's famed Nurburgring circuit for three days of test-driving under the legendary Italian marque's Corse Clienti department. 15 Ferrari 599XX and 4 Enzo-based Ferrari FXXs were joined on the track by 10 rare Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 cars, among the world's most desirable vehicles. Amongst them was the F190 raced by Nigel Mansell in the 1990 Formula 1 Championship; the 412 T1 with which Gerhard Berger won the 1994 German Grand Prix; the F300, which was the 45th car built by Scuderia Ferrari for the 1998 season, driven to six wins by Michael Schumacher; and the F2001, with which the German champion won nine races. Also present was the more recent F2007, which took both World titles for the Scuderia team. The beautiful thoroughbred racers are almost as much fun to look at as to drive.

Ferrari to Show Off 599 Hybrid at Geneva Motor Show

News of an impending hybrid from Ferrari are nothing new, but now we appear to have an actual date when the Italian supercar manufacturer plans to show such a vehicle in an official setting. And it's coming soon, during the first week in March at the Geneva Motor Show, says Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo.

The announcement came during the unveiling of Ferrari's new F10 Formula One car, which seems appropriate as it was during the 2009 F1 season when Ferrari first began using its Kinetic Energy Recovery System – a kind of hybrid technology that captures energy normally lost to braking in a flywheel – in actual competition... with mixed results, of course.

We can't say for sure what kind of hybrid setup Ferrari will show off in its 599 supercar, but something similar in principle to the race-bred KERS seems like a distinct possibility, and we know the automaker has been dabbling in all-wheel drive hybrids as well. In any case, Ferrari promises a production hybrid vehicle in the near future. Stay tuned.

Ferrari Announces Exclusive 599XX Program in Geneva

Hard as it may be to imagine for the common folk, there are some super-wealthy sportscar enthusiasts for whom an "ordinary" Ferrari isn't fast or exclusive enough. But the exotic Italian automaker isn't about to leave its most valued (and high-value) clients unsatisfied, so back in 2005 they launched the FXX program that allows the unspeakably wealthy to become client test drivers for the factory, piloting experimental Enzo prototypes packed with the latest F1 technology around the finest race tracks in the world. This year at the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari followed up with an experimental version based on the 599 GTB Fiorano. Called the 599XX, it packs a 700-horsepower V12 and a host of Formula One-derived technology to be tested by the participating clients before being applied to the next generation of Ferrari supercars. The program costs upwards of a million euros to participate, including the cost of the car, but only 20-30 will be offered and spaces made available. At that level of exclusivity, you're not likely to see a 599XX roaming your local streets (especially since it isn't street-legal), so click on the images below to see the 599XX on the floor of the Geneva Motor Show.
