Ferragamo on Park Avenue, Estate of the Day

Where else would you expect the chairman of Ferragamo USA to live in New York City but a swanky Park Avenue penthouse? The NY Times Big Deal column reports that Massimo Ferragamo, Salvatore Ferragamo's youngest son and the chairman of Ferragamo USA has listed a residence described in the listing as a penthouse in a "distinguished white-glove Park Avenue cooperative. The 15-room penthouse on two floors has a sunny living room with a solarium leading out to a large terrace that has plants and irrigation. The apartment is designed for gracious entertaining with a paneled library, small home theater, dining room and eat-in kitchen. There are two guest bedrooms on the eighth floor. A spiral staircase leads upstairs to the private quarters where a corner master bedroom suite with a study, and two baths await. There are an additional two bedrooms upstairs along with a gym, laundry, den, staff room with bath, and kitchenette on the ninth floor. This property is listed at $16 million.

The Fashion Statement: For Sex or Abstinence?

Designers are in the midst of a heated argument at Milan fashion week-whether one should dress for sex or dress for abstinence in a global recession. Seems a fitting debate in a country where the famously womanizing Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Pope Benedict XVI are its two most powerful leaders

On the celibate team sits Miuccia Prada, who practices restraint on a regular basis (well, by Italian standards). She further reigned in her collection (well, by Prada standards) to include charcoal knee-length walking shorts, Fifties-style swimwear and demure day dresses. The ever quirky Marni showed knee-length shorts and paired them with thick-strapped shoes with thick soles worn with beige ankle socks (I can hear my boyfriend's protests now). Roberto Cavalli went AWOL from his I'm-too-sexy position in the marketplace, putting out modest peasant dresses with hems stopping mid-calf.

Then again, sex sells. Versace stayed true to form. Sex, sex and more sex with Donatella's brand of cigarettes afterward, thank you. Slits cut up to there. Necklines cut down to there. Cut-outs revealing erogenous zones. Towering stilettos. Short, short, short. (Definitely more my boyfriend's speed, I'm guessing.)

Salvatore Ferragamo Mini Vara Capra Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Mini Vara Capra Shoulder BagThe Salvatore Ferragamo Mini Vara Capra Shoulder Bag is a chic and fresh new offering from one of our old standbys.

Just look at the strap: leather, chain, a buckle and a tie keep the bag interesting, but the different elements are graceful and pretty together -- that's quite a feat! Not only that, but it's adjustable, so it's even functional in all its eclectic glory.

The bag pictured here is metallic silver with brass-toned nickel hardware, and it also comes in black and shell. We love the way the Italian leather is clamped into this rich, grabbable texture on the retro front flap.

The Mini Vara Capra Shoulder Bag is available from Neiman Marcus for $1,490.00.

Salvatore Ferragamo Gathered Leather Hobo, Handbag of the Day

leather handbag
I don't always feel that handbags are pieces of art but Salvatore Ferragamo's Gathered Leather Hobo inspires me to become an artist myself. From the deep curvature along the midline with surrounding pleats of red brick leather to the metallic adornments and twisted strap that complete the piece it is truly a gorgeous handbag. (Plus, the fluid curves look like they would accommodate your arm or shoulder perfectly and nestle it between the smooth leather sides). The bag also boasts a silk lining, pushlock closure, inside zipper and two open pockets, a single strap (10" drop) and detachable shoulder strap (15" drop) all for $1,790. Display this medium-sized hobo around town, on the job or in the evening -- where wouldn't you want to wear it? (16 1/2" x 15" x 3 1/2")

Ferragamo Salvatore Lady Watch

salvatore ferregamo watch
Elegant, simple, and easy to like - this Salvatore Lady watch from designer Ferregamo is the brand's first women's watch and is also a counterpart to the Salvatore, which is the company's first men's watch. The movement is quartz, while the dial is mother of pearl with diamonds for the hour markers as well as for decoration on the bezel in a double row. 30 diamonds on the face and 136 on the case. Different versions of the watch feature different amounts of diamonds that can also decorate the deployment clasp and the lugs.

In what could be described as a post art deco futurist look, the design of the watch is clean and functional, though well stylized. The blue colored alligator strap is further a sign of past times - perhaps during an era where a luxury couch might have looked good in this color. Aside the mother of pearl dial and blue strap, other dial and strap colors will be available. The crystal is sapphire. I particularly like the design of the lug assembly that is unique but makes total practical sense. The Ferragamo Salvatore Lady watch collection should be available now.

Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Intrecc Vitello Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Intrecc Vitello Shoulder BagThe Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Intrecc Vitello Shoulder Bag is truly unusual and very chic.

This bag comes in plum (shown), gold, or black metallic leather and is the perfect day bag, with that comfortable square-cut shoulder and enough space for all your accessories -- even the makeup bag.

We love the elegant, braided rope-like details and the creative gathered pleat at the front. The sides feature drawstrings to help keep this open-top bag safely and securely shut. This bag has no hardware at all, so you can wear it with gold or silver, and any pattern, as it is completely and deliberately monochromatic.

The Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Intrecc Vitello Shoulder Bag is available from Neiman Marcus for $1,290.00.

Salvatore Ferragamo Lacon Nappa Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Salvatore Ferragamo Lacon Nappa ClutchThe Salvatore Ferragamo Lacon Nappa Clutch is a little slice of Italian heaven, just like tiramisu and Alyssa Milano.

This simple bag features artfully gathered, buttery burgundy nappa leather, and three leather rosettes (a big trend this season) for a monochromatic, demure look.

We love the envelope style and charming wristlet -- as if you'd ever get tired of holding this chic creation. We'd wear this with everything from jeans to a ball gown, and it's slim enough to toss into a larger purse if you don't have time to do the full switch the morning after.

The Salvatore Ferragamo Lacon Nappa Clutch is available from Neiman Marcus for $1,290.00.

Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Esotico Pouffle Satchel, Handbag of the Day

Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Esotico Pouffle SatchelThe Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Esotico Pouffle Satchel is an everyday bag for an extraordinary woman.

It doesn't come cheap -- this brown wild Indonesian python and rich Italian leather beauty will cost you almost $3,000. And sorry, Californians, as you probably know, python can't be shipped to you.

The bag has an easy elegance with its equestrian-style details atop its generous heap of python skin. We especially love the brassy-finished nickel hardware, making this bag appropriate with gold or silver jewelry.

This satchel would go just as well with jeans as an LBD (brown and black is okay this year), and at 9"H x 17 1/2"W x 4 1/2"D, it's large enough to take you from day to night with no trouble.

Look at the side buckles! We love this bag.

The Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Esotico Pouffle Satchel is available for pre-order from Neiman Marcus for $2,950.00.

Salvatore Ferragamo Leather Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Salvatore Ferragamo Leather Shoulder BagThe Salvatore Ferragamo Leather Shoulder Bag is a versatile bag with a number of elegant details.

The "luxuriously soft Italian leather" bag comes in a beautiful, subtle shade of brown they are calling Sequoia. The muted brass closure keeps this bag monochromatic -- and wearable with almost any color.

The braided, 8" drop strap is easy on the shoulder, and adds eccentricity to the artful look of this bag. We love the gentle, centralized gathering and the square trim. This bag is lined in silk satin, and is a generous 15" x 11" x 3" in size, making it large enough to carry a full sheet of paper (for work), yet slim and elegant enough for an evening out.

The Salvatore Ferragamo Leather Shoulder Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for pre-order for $1,490.

80 Years of Salvatore Ferragamo

Italian publisher Skira is about to release the gorgeous catalog of an exhibition at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art commemorating the eightieth anniversary of design house Ferragamo. Founder Salvatore Ferragamo died in 1960, but his name lives on in the firm which has become "synonymous with shoes that embody wildly creative design, painstaking construction techniques, blissful comfort, and the finest materials" - not to mention over-the-top items such as the $250,000 crocodile trench coat we wrote about the other day.

Salvatore Ferragamo: Evolving Legend 1928-2008 is a "fully illustrated monograph of the legendary Italian purveyor of luxury, this book also serves as a journey through the history of fashion from the 1920s to the present." Mr. Ferragamo made his name creating footwear for the most beautiful movie stars in Hollywood including Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Marlene Deitrich, and Audrey Hepburn. The book is filled with a rich collection of photographs, archival material, sketches, and drawings exploring Ferragamo's design process.

Ferragamo Slated to Design Dubai Penthouses

Filed under: Decor, Real Estate Developments

The legendary Italian design house of Salvatore Ferragamo will design the interiors of Trident International's new Dubai-based Pentominium (where expansive penthouses meet the convenience of condo living). The tower for which Ferragamo will design is slated to be the tallest residential building in the world at over 500 meters high. Each floor will comprise one penthouse unit, measuring a luxe 6,500 square feet and offering expansive ocean views.

The building itself will offer a Davidoff-inspired cigar lounge, rooftop observation deck, Swarovski-crystallized grand entrance, indoor pool and spa and fully functional business center. Not that you'd need to leave the tower, but if the need arises, Pentominium residents have use of a fleet of Rolls Royces and Azimut yachts. Residences are expected to be finished by 2012. Though standard units will start at $5.3 million, penthouse list prices have yet to be disclosed.

While researching something for Luxist, I came across Styledrops, a fashion site for men, women and children that sells upscale Italian designer goods. For women, select from shoes, handbags, clothing and accessories. Same for men, minus the handbags. Kids get shoes and clothing. The site boasts "the best price you have ever seen on the Internet!"

A sampling of brands: Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Tod's, Hogan, Dior, Fratelli Rossetti, Ferragamo, Cesare Paciotti, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Frankie Morello. Check here for the whole list for women, men and kids. Choose by type of item, designer or price.

I haven't purchased from the site so I can't vouch for service or quality, but the site itself is easy to navigate and has some very high-end items.

Top Fashion Brands Fall Back In Love With Supermodels

After several years of scrambling after hot new faces, a slew of the world's top fashion houses have decided to take a more classic approach for Spring/Summer '08, showcasing supermodels who ruled the Earth in the 1990s in their latest ad campaigns. The top indicator that the supes are back in town is artist Richard Prince's new campaign for the Louis Vuitton bags he designed, starring a gaggle of semi-retired stars: Stephanie Seymour, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Eva Herzigova, all sprawled on the hood of a kandy-kolored muscle car.

This season, Schiffer also appears in ads for Salvatore Ferragamo as well as Chanel, along with Christy Turlington, who's now also the face of Escada. Herzigova also stars in the new Roberto Cavalli and Chopard campaigns, while Shalom Harlow meanwhile does the honors for Valentino, Tumi and Jones New York.

Inside, the bag is lined in brown cotton and features zip, slide and cell phone pockets. $1250.

Designers: It's Not Just About Clothes Anymore

Filed under: Gadgets, Luxury Cars & Autos, Wings

Who you are is largely communicated by your style, whether you like it or not. Whether you try, or don't try, either way says a great deal. And just what does "style" all include? Many major designers believe it's about more than just clothes and fashion, and are hoping to cash in on some of the other "angles" where their respective brand names can help somebody make a statement. After all, designers are all about style, and style is about a lot more than just fashion.

Specifically designers are branching out into technology and transportation -- and they're doing it in a big way. But then we wouldn't expect anything less from names like Prada and Versace, would we?

State-of-the-art touch screen cell-phones, sports cars, private jets, and even helicopters are just the beginning of this trend. So be on the lookout for more than just clothes bearing designer names and, of course, designer prices.
