The Fashion Statement: The Rise of Flatforms

After a long run, the precarious platform shoes we've seen for much of the last decade are giving a new, flatter platform. Or, as I'm calling them-flatforms.

If fashion soothsayers have names like Marc Jacobs, Fendi and Derek Lam, platforms here to stay-in fact, we can expect to see them through fall 2011 (Issey Miyake, above)-but gone are the high arches and their impossible heights. In their place are gentle graduated slopes full of the promise of easy promenades that don't give up much of the stature of their predecessors. That's not to say, these flatter versions are without danger. A fall show in New York featured flatform combat boots that made at least two female models and one male model fall flat on their faces.

By and large, though, this spring designers are delivering walkable wedges with no shortage of style. Marc Jacobs' platforms bring us back to the '70s with their rainbow colors adorning the arches of the shoe. Fendi confounds modern architectural rules with platforms that seem to come in three separate sections-a heel in emerald green, a mid-shoe in brown and a toe in natural wood with a bright blue strap. Derek Lam is probably the most traditional-basic Maryjanes in camel opened-toe or off-white closed toe upon natural-grained wood.

The Latest Must-Have Luxury Item from LVMH: An $11 Million Yacht
Last summer my colleague Noah Joseph reported that LVMH planned to bring its recently-acquired Princess Yachts brand to the U.S. Now the luxury goods conglomerate, owner of blue-chip brands ranging from Louis Vuitton to Dom Pérignon, has unveiled its new M Class range of super-stylish superyachts that places Princess on a firm footing with the rest of the LVMH stable. First into production is the 105-ft. 32M (above), with a base price of about $11 million. LVMH brought in some of its other brands including Fendi, De Beers and Moet to help celebrate its debut at the London International Boat Show.

The UK-built 32M, a long range cruising yacht boasting a huge saloon among other amenities, is available with a choice of four or five cabins including a master suite with a split level bathroom, two or three double bedrooms and a twin room. Several lavish interior design schemes from the likes of fashion houses Fendi and Armani Casa are available. The finishing touches like carrara marble baths are worthy of any luxury hotel. Next up the company plans to launch a 132-ft. version in 2012 with luxe options like a matching set of Louis Vuitton luggage.

The Fashion Statement: Designer Kids Lines Boom

Filed under: Charity, The Fashion Statement

A week ago, I wrote about the hordes of celebrities with baby bumps on the red carpet during awards season. Well, designers must have been some kind of soothsayers, because several spent a good part of last year developing and launching children lines. Soon, they will no doubt see the fruits of their labor (sorry), as more and more of these privileged babies are born.

Jennifer Lopez's twins, Max and Emme, were the stars of Gucci's advertising campaign to publicize its designer munchkin wear (0 to 8 year-olds) which debuted late last year. Lopez said this week she only agreed to let her kids be photographed because it was for a good cause. Gucci pledged $1 million to UNICEF's Schools for Africa initiative.

Fendi Peekaboo Tote, Handbag of the Day

Fendi Peekaboo ToteNot the most feminine creation but attractive for its simplicity, this Fendi Peekaboo Large Tote also comes in cyclamen (magenta) if the earthy shade shown here is too basic for your tastes. The "peekaboo" refers to the signature Zucca jacquard lining that peeps out when the bag is opened. Besides that it features a top frame with structured double top handles attached with rings, protective metal feet, tonal topstitching, and turn-lock closures that fasten the peekaboo sides and the center divide. A great handbag/briefcase hybrid for working women. $2,550

Fendi Savana Mini Baguette

I've always been drawn to rustic colored handbags. Especially chocolate brown and burnt orange. Brown is a versatile color that complements many outfits, while burnt orange injects an understated pop of color. It's no wonder the Fendi Savana Mini Baguette ($935) caught my attention. Although described as being brown, the Savana Mini has burnt orange undertones making for a unique hue. This lady-like purse is fashioned in a shimmery grained leather with a gold toned chain link shoulder strap that really sets it off. Add a logo medallion and voila – you have yourself a breathtakingly elegant purse that could be worn for work or a special evening out. Measurements: 4.5" x 7" x 1".

The Luxist Top Ten Handbags of 2010

Valentino Crystal-Embellished Feather Clutch
2010 may have been a tough year in a lot of ways, but it was a terrific year for handbags. From divinely sparkling clutches to totes in unheard-of textures, designers were inventive, creative and finally took some risks again -- a sure sign of an improving economy. We're celebrating the return to flamboyance and daring style with a list of our top ten favorites from this year's outstanding Luxist Handbag of the Day collection.

1.
Valentino Crystal-Embellished Feather Clutch

Let's begin with the ethereal, exquisite bag above, the Valentino Crystal-Embellished Feather Clutch. These little birdies outdid even the Judith Lieber Enchanted Stardust Clutch with their whimsical glamour, and the feathers are so elegantly and daintily assembled, the clutch eclipsed the ballerina charm of the Valentino Tulle Rosette Bag. We love the coloring; it's as if each perfect feather has been gingerly dipped in the blackest of ink. The pale pink satin structure and lining complete the dream-come-true wonder of this masterful handbag which commanded $4,170.00.

Fendi Cap Toe Mid Boot

Combining style with functionality, the Fendi Cap Toe Boot ($900) has you prepared for the casual days that still need a little boost to make your outfit interesting.

Set in navy blue corded suede and accented with sand colored shoelaces, rubber cap toe and sole, you'll have comfort, be scuff free (at least around the toe box) all the while looking very chic in a unique pair of boots.

While I admire suede's luxe look, given it's rubber cap toe, it would have been nice to see this boot in a material that was not so fragile and could withstand some rain but I suppose that is what wellies are for. Shaft measurement: 7.5" and heel measurement: 4.5".

Fendi Mamma Forever Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Fendi Mamma Forever Shoulder BagThe Fendi Mamma Forever Shoulder Bag is a gorgeous purse which simply oozes class.

White bags have been a little overdone, and this Fendi brings a fresh perspective to the concept in an eye-catching shade of pale platinum light blue. It's complemented beautifully by the goldtone hardware, and its classic shape gives it elegance and timeless style (just like your mamma).

The bag is # 13¾"W X 11¾"H X 5½"D and made in Italy from supple calf leather. The lining is a special mustard-colored surprise, and there's an inside zip pocket.

Unless everyone copies this color, which they might, this is the kind of bag you could bring out every three years and never look out of style. It's a perfect oversized pocketbook for the office or for travel.

The Fendi Mamma Forever Shoulder Bag is available for pre-order from Saks Fifth Avenue for $725.00.

Fendi Roll Bag Tote, Handbag of the Day

Fendi Roll BagFendi mixes earthy natural vibes with contemporary graphic ones in the brown on brown flower print of this Roll Bag Tote. Zucca coated canvas houses the pretty floral inlay with incorporated Fendi logo, giving it a more substantial and luxurious feel than the average tote bag. Other than that it's pretty basic, featuring roomy 9" drop double top handles, no top closure to speak of (open), and a somewhat unexpected pop of color in the form of a mustard lined interior, complete with one zip pocket. One of my favorite totes in a long time, $1,010.

Fendi Python Skin Clutch, Handbag of the Day

fendi python clutch
The Fendi Python Skin Clutch ($2720) is ultra sleek and sophisticated. It has a clean and minimal design with complimentary understated accents. And with such a 'below the radar' look, it is classic enough to be paired with any outfit throughout the year. The frame clutch is made with python leather offering a gorgeous texture and embodies a deep rich color that at times it's hard for me to decipher if it's black or navy blue – or perhaps I'm color blind as my husband tells me all the time. One of my favorite parts of this clutch is the tiny logo inscription on the ash wood and plexi handle. It is a discrete touch to an elegant bag.

Fendi Baguette Maxi Leather Bag, Handbag of the Day

Fendi Baguette Maxi Leather Bag
Here's a nice quiet bag from Fendi, in an earthy shade of green and featuring just a few choice details to keep quiet and easy from becoming plain and boring. The Baguette Maxi Leather Bag is a reworked version of Fendi's iconic Baguette style, updated with the season's military trend, fringe detail, and slouchy leather. It also features goldtone hardware, designer-stamped buckles, a removable shoulder strap for carrying crossbody or as a clutch (albeit a very large one), and a brown twill lining with a single zip pocket. $1,630

Fendi Peekaboo Embroidered Tote, Handbag of the Day

Fendi Peekaboo Embroidered Tote
I'm very much undecided on how I feel about this Fendi Peekaboo Embroidered Tote. On one hand I love the old-fashioned feel of embroidery (and like crochet it's an uncommon touch in handbags today) but something about the floral pattern on this bag strikes me as tackily out-of-date instead of retro or old-fashioned chic. The body is made of black cotton and features a large multi-colored embroidery pattern on one side and a much smaller one on the reverse with dark green leather trim and goldtone hardware. It has a single top handle and detachable shoulder strap, two compartments with twist lock closures, and the inside is lined in beige leather. $6,980

Fendi Skin Handle Bag, Handbag of the Day

Fendi Skin Handle Bag
The Fendi Skin Handle Bag is the perfect candy colored summer accessory. Its square shape is a welcomed alternative to a slouchy hobo bag or clutch, while the color adds a dose of sunshine. This gorgeous bag would look great with the most simple of outfit, like as pair of jeans, sandals and a t-shirt, but if you wanted a more feminine and lady like outfit, take a look at these dresses. The Fendi Skin Bag ($2050) is made of grained leather with rolled leather handles and tastefully accented with ash wood and gold toned studs. The interior is lined with linen and features two organizational pockets. Dimensions: 8.5" x 11" x 4".

Fendi Twins Woven Raffia Shopper, Handbag of the Day

shopping handbag
In the dead of winter it's always nice to get a sneak peak of spring with a light and bright handbag. Fendi's Twins Woven Raffia Shopper highlights the warmer months to come with a simple, airy design for a natural, easy-going look. It speaks of crisp, rainy mornings at a farmer's market and cool, sunny days at the beach. With sand-glazed, woven raffia and clean black leather handles, shoulder strap, and interior trip, this bag is an instant classic. The pale gold-tone accents complete the picture and the designer-stamped feet allow you to set the bag down just about anywhere. For $2,560 entice the warmer months to arrive a bit sooner.
