Eddie Van Halen's Guitar Ends Up In The Smithsonian

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History has picked up a little rock and roll, in the form of the Van Halen "Frank 2" guitar. This guitar was played eddie Van Halend uring the Van Halen 2007-08 North American tour with original lead singer David Lee Roth. The guitar replaced the original "Frankenstein" guitar which Van halen had built way back in the mid-1970s when he was experimenting with how to make new sounds. Chip Ellis, a master guitar builder at Fender, replicated every detail of the original guitar. The "Frank 2" will be part of the museum's Division of Culture and the Arts but Smithsonian Magazine says that it is not on display yet. Fender has sold 300 replicas of the original Frankenstrat for $25,000 and is the parent company to Eddie Van Halen's EVH brand which sells guitars and related equipment.

The Fender Stratocaster Coffee Table

It's the most iconic image in rock 'n' roll: that sleekly contoured and lustily potent electric guitar commonly known as the Strat. With that in mind, two entrepreneurs in Portland, Oregon, have designed a boutique line of furniture based on the Fender Stratocaster and the company's almost-as-recognizable amps.

The outfit is called Fender Custom Furniture. It is independent from the instrument manufacturing company founded by Leo Fender in Fullerton, Calif., in 1946, but licenses its products through them. Hence the unmistakable detailing on the Deluxe Stratocaster Coffee Table ($750), a 4-foot-long version of the Strat's solid maple, vintage-finished headstock. The piece, which sits on three chrome-plated legs and is 15 inches high, has six tuning peg caps (made of inlaid steel disks) and silk-screened Fender lettering. For a third the price, there's the Standard Stratocaster Table, with the same dimensions only composite wood and silk-screened pegs.

The line also includes "hot seats" ($180) in the shape of Fender's Blackface and Tweed amps. They're essentially hollow cubes with a cushioned seat that pops up to reveal storage space when you turn a volume knob that's straight out of the Fender inventory. You can practically hear the reverb.

The Ford Shelby GT500KR Stratocaster Guitar

Ford Motor Company and Fender have come together to create a very cool way to celebrate a love for both music and mustangs: the Ford Shelby GT500KR Stratocaster guitar. Limited to just 100, the guitar features the Colby logo, Shelby hood stripes, a handpainted body graphic, "Shelby" and "GT500KR" mother of pearl inlays at the 7th and 12th frets, and the hardshell case that comes with it is hand-embroidered with Ford and Shelby graphics. Each guitar is numbered, with the very first one (#000) having been auctioned off to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The remaining guitars are available for pre-order now and will be shipped sometime mid-April. $5600

Fender Guitars Auctioned For Fashion Week Scholarship

As part of Los Angeles fashion week, one aspiring designer will be awarded a $20,000 one-year scholarship to attend FIDM/The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising this fall and to work with fashion designer Kevan Hall. The scholarship will be partially funded through an upcoming auction of one-of-a-kind Fender guitars decorated by guitarist Slash, supermodel Carolyn Murphy, pop star Mya and skater Tony Hawk. The guitars are on display during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios and will be auctioned this spring. The saucy guitar in the center which bears plenty of pictures of women in lingerie and the words "whip me" up one side is bound to be a hot seller.
