Givenchy Stops Runway Shows

Runway shows attract a lot of attention to a brand. They are also prohibitively expensive and in some cases, a luxury brands can no longer afford. One catwalk stalwart, Givenchy has decided to stop the grand spectacle of the couture catwalk shows in favor of individual client and editor appointments. But the label's artistic director Riccardo Tisci says this isn't a cost-cutting move but one that will actually cost more. The plan is to distill the collection into 10 key looks and then showcase them in an 18th century town house on the Place Vendome in Paris and to create a look book for the event. The aim is to make couture seem more upscale and exclusive. Tisci also told WWD that he plans not to use any black in his designs.

The Montauk Surf Lodge at Fashion Week

While this year marks the end of Bryant Park tents, and the backstage lounges that go along with them, alternative runway spaces around the city are getting more and more creative each year. Whether at the Metropolitan Pavilion or Milk Studios, the hottest designers of the season have already opted out of the traditional 7th on Sixth lineup to prepare for the upcoming seasons. With the move of Bryant Park backstage lounges, new innovative places for media, designers, and other fashion insiders to decompress are already popping up alongside the new runways.

Our favorite space this year by far was the Montauk Surf Lodge on the 8th Floor of Milk Studios. The lounge, designed by Rob McKinley, featured a view across the river, picnic tables, and a cool, relaxed vibe, exactly mirroring its Hamptons mothership. Sam Talbot, Executive Chef of the original Surf Lounge in Montauk, cooked up delicious fish tacos and Hawaiian macaroni salad all week for tired visitors. A welcoming bar served up Belvedere cocktails and Cafe Bustelo lattes for guests. Lounge staff wore original uniforms provided by Loomstate made from organic cotton and natural dyes, as well as Vans Shoes and Jill Platner jewelry. Gazing from the wealth of enamored guests filling up the gorgeous space, the Montauk Surf Lodge is a welcome reminder of what's to come for upcoming fashion weeks as the traditional players begin to spread their wings all over our broad city. Check out the gallery for more photos of the Surf Lodge.

Fashion Week Style Off the Runway

While designers from Bryant Park to Chelsea defined our trends over the next season, we found a few cues of inspiration off the runway. Check out the easy looks here for ways on incorporating tomorrow's top New York Fashion Week looks into your wardrobe today.

BiCoastal Style

While the week was all about our dear New York, a few out-of-towners managed to get their collections in the limelight. We enjoyed the new SuperTrash collection, which premiered at Landmarc, Columbus Circle, from Creative Director Olcay Gulsen, whose sleek silhouettes are entirely wearable on both coasts. SuperTrash fans range from Victoria Beckham to Rachel Bilson, and are remarkable for their refined style and high quality materials. "I started SuperTrash in 2004," Gulsen told Luxist. "And it was for this whole new generation of girls who were strong and independent and starting their careers and being who they were and not being ashamed of it." To get an easy idea of the look, the Supertrash woman is someone who pairs rich, textured leggings with a divine wool jacket. "That is the complete lifestyle of SuperTrash," said Gulsen. "Just travel all around the world, have a great time, and be proud."

Fashion 2.0 Social Media Awards

Last year marked more than any other a move of marketing and PR toward social media. With Fashion Week taking over the entire city, it's hard to turn a corner in New York now without bumping into a social media "expert," a blogger, Tweeter or YouTuber. As more and more fashion brands direct their ad money away from print spreads toward digital campaigns, many industry watchers are taking note of who floated to the top and who failed miserably.

Last year the New York Times dubbed Burberry the leader of the pack. Their microsite, The Art of the Trench, began when they roped in online influencer Scott Schuman, creator of the amazing Sartorialist Blog to photograph people wearing its iconic slicker. Then users submitted their own posts, and could comment and approve on others, resulting in millions of pictures views. It was a mini Satorialist site, a trusted underground name co-opted by social marketing, all geared toward the traditional British brand. The stakes had been set, now who would follow suit?

Style Coalition and ideeli, in partnership with Lucky Magazine announced the Fashion 2.0 Social Media awards this fashion season, to recognize some of the more clever campaigns in a special reception at the W Hotel, New York City. The nominees were chosen by a panel of industry influencers, and awards were, of course, chosen by the people, with over 10,000 online users ringing in their votes. Inside the packed room, executives from Donna Karen, Kate Spade, and Coach were on hand to receive awards. FourSquare was awared an Innovator award. When we were at the tents today, a mere thirteen users had checked into Bryant Park on FourSquare. Only time will tell what the landscape looks like come next Fashion week.

And the complete winners are:

· Best Online Video: Chanel, Coco In Motion
· Best Twitter – Donna Karan, @DKNY
· Best Facebook Page: Coach
· Best Blog: Free People
· Best Website: Kate Spade
· Next Big Thing: FourSquare
· Top Innovator: Burberry

Check out the winning campaigns and let us know what you think. This author is reachable on Twitter.

Band of Outsiders 2010 Presentation

Last night Milk Studios was packed to the brim with painfully stylish downtowners eager to get a glimpse at the Band of Outsiders 2010 presentation. Scott Sternberg's latest production did not disappoint.

An avalanche of dinner party chairs set the scene upon entering the room. Models leaned on the furniture, each other, alternately chatting and posing for photos amidst a Pink Floyd soundtrack. They played with Swarovski encrusted walkie talkies and typewriter props. From the Boy line, one model was the center of attention wearing a black and gold silk habotai v-neck outfit, complete with cordovan saddle oxfords lined with stark metal cleats. A man hanging from a ceiling swing wore tightly knitted black and white melange wool blend sweatpants, a comfortable look that was anything but casual. Anna Wintour and daughter, with no front row seat to occupy, settled for a private tour of the clothes.

Continuing on to the center of the room, the collection took to the outdoors showcasing looks for a day on the waters or on the slopes. A tree-lined office showcased more of Sternberg's impeccably dressed suits, another collection from the L.A. designer that is redefining the meaning of tailored for both men and women. Sleek vertical lines conquered the room, whether on a perfectly buttoned up Boy hunter green flannel shirt, or a slim-fitting Band gold and navy gingham check shirt covered with a navy pinstripe worsted wool suit.

A vintage Jaguar and piles of suitcases ended the presentation with a line of ready-to-wear ensembles perfect for travel. With fitted vests and effortless trenchcoats, Sternberg's collection gives us no excuse for dressing down on a trip. We bumped into Bored to Death star and the face of the Band of Outsiders fall campaign, Jason Schwartzman, who was eyeing a hooded toggle coat. "It was my honor," Schwartman told us of the collaboration. "I love what Scott does. Finally, something that fits me."

Susan Woo's Fall/Winter Collection at Fashion Week

New York-based clothing designer Susan Woo presented her 2010 Fall/Winter Collection at the Bryant Park Hotel yesterday.

The collection, which consisted of silk and wool pieces in such colors as scarlett, black, cream and olive, were accompanied by shoes designed by Michael Antonio.

Unlike many other collections one might expect to see strutting down a runway this week, every piece in the Susan Woo collection is extremely wearable. Innovative and sophisticated designs were flattering and consistent across the entire line.

Woo, 27, is a graduate of Cornell University who grew up in Roslyn, New York. She cut her teeth working for Derek Lam, Louis Vuitton and and Chanel before setting out on her own. Her first collection was introduced in the fall of 2009.

The environmentally-conscious designer selects natural products such as organic wool and silk crepe. She chooses to have her designs manufactured by only eco-friendly factories that employ fair labor practices

The 2010 Fall/Winter Collection was built around a beautiful cream and black silk crepe full-length gown with a boat neck. "I always start with one piece and it escalates from there," she explains. "It sets the tone for the silhouettes and the tone."

"I love that it is white, because most pieces people wear black in the fall and winter," adds Woo. "It stands out. I love the contrast and how graphic it is."

The Susan Woo line is carried by LouisBoston in Boston, Chalk in Evanston, Ill., Code C in Los Angeles, Debut in New York, and Kaight in New York.

Backstage Dior, An Eye-Popping All-Access Pass

Renowned photographer Roxanne Lowit has been chronicling the fashion scene for the past 30 years; early on she staked out the backstage areas at fashion shows, where the really interesting action takes place, as her prime hunting ground for capturing the most beautiful people in their natural habitat. Now Lowit, whose work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum and others, has an incredible new book just published by teNeues, focusing on brilliant, flamboyant Dior deigner John Galliano's couture concoctions which she chronicled for over a decade. Backstage Dior, with a foreword by Galliano, mixes black-and-white and color images, candids and close-ups, delving into the fascinating details behind the scenes. The book is a must for any devotée of fashion, spectacle, photography, or all three.

Fashion Week - Elie Tahari Spring 2010

Translucent jacket from the Elie Tahari Spring 2010 CollectionLast week, we had the privilege of chatting with Elie Tahari (Elie Tahari Talks With Luxist), and, following that, we saw his fabulous new collection for Spring 2010.

As promised, the gallery below is full of photos of what's to come -- and good news, if you get bored with the dark, speakeasy colors of this fall and holiday season (glamorous though they are), you can look to Tahari -- and a number of other designers -- to lighten things up this spring!

The Tahari Spring 2010 collection features dresses, tops and coats with romantic eyelets for women and translucent windbreakers for men (right -- oh hi windbreakers, we missed you), and combines neutrals like khaki, white and grey with simple gold and silver details -- with splashes of bright orange and yellow, as well. After a winter of sequins and velvet, this lightweight, carefree style is going to be a big relief.

Mackage Opens First Retail Store, Chooses NYC

Mackage Opens First Retail Store, Chooses NYCKnown for its leather-trimmed, fitted outerwear, Canadian coat designer Mackage on September 1 opened its first stand-alone store, and chose NYC's hip Meatpacking District. I stopped by the store to check it out. The full Fall/Winter 2009 lines for men and women were on display in the small but classy store. Mirrors here and there make it easy (and tempting) to slip on a leather coat, puffy jacket, trench, or packable anorak. I commented to the rep helping me that the line looked familiar -- she said that certain styles were in Bloomingdale's and other high-end stores, but never the whole line, which is why Mackage decided to open its own store.

The coats are beautiful -- from wools to leathers to styles with fur trim, all are designed to be warm and fashionable, a rare combo. Even the packable anoraks are upscale. Rather than try to describe all here, check out the gallery for a few representative styles.

The store is a pop-up boutique, aka a limited-run, just for September, so Mackage can gauge interest and see if it wants to continue in this retail venue. So don't hesitate if you want to see the new line. There even will be special promotions this month with the chance to win a free coat or a free blow-out. Or ...

To see Mackage's Fall 2009 line, stop by the store (829 Washington St, NYC, 212-255-3807) on Thursday, September 10, as part of Fashion's Night Out, a worldwide event that coincides with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Fashion authority Phillip Bloch will be on hand offering free tips and consultations from 7 - 9 p.m., Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon will be doing blowouts from 6 - 9 pm, and model Irina Lazareanu will DJ from 9 - 11 pm.

Glamour Back in Fashion at Miami Swimsuit Shows

At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Miami designers just showed the latest looks in swimwear for Spring 2010. "Old glamour is back in a big way" declared the Miami Herald of the numerous collections on display at the chic Raleigh Hotel in South Beach. Check out the video above for some highlights - you'll enjoy it even if you can't wear any of the suits yourself. Other trends of note to emerge from the round of eye-popping events, according to the Herald: hot pink is in, ditto transparent material; as for shape it was "all about the bandeau and the monokini (attached bikini) or cutout one-pieces," while high-waisted and ruffled looks made a splash as well. Many of the suits were "sexy in a feminine way - not overtly flashing a lot of skin." Oh well.

Barbie Inspires Bulgari

Barbie's 50th birthday is turning into an epic celebration. She's already gotten her own pair of tiny Louboutin heels and a big pink book, now she's getting her own runway show during New York Fashion Week. As Fashion Week Daily reported last week, famous fashion designers including Diane Von Furstenberg will lend their talents to creating Barbie-inspired designs. The fashions will be matched by a special collection of jewels and bags by Bulgari.

Bulgari has an anniversary of its own this year, its 125th which it is celebrating with an exhibition on May 20 at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. The exhibition will support the Save the Children "Rewrite the Future" campaign which is funding education programs for 8 million children in war-torn regions. Barbie will appear with many celebrities in a portfolio of photographs shot by Fabrizio Ferri who has contributed to the project on a pro bono basis. As I mentioned last fall, Bulgari's campaign for Save the Children also includes a silver ring which sells for $290.
