Looking for a rock solid spa treatment? How about The Spa @ Equinox's new 24k Gold Facial?

Sure. But does it feel good? The answer is yes - the $165 treatment includes full signature spa facial, which includes a detailed skin analysis, custom facial and décolletage massage. The 24K Gold Collagen Mask caps off the treatment to moisturize, firm and whiten the skin.

The facial is currently being offered at Equinox spas in cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Boston, Dallas and DC.

Now that's what we call a gold standard.

La Prairie's $410 Platinum Facial

You can get a facial at almost any spa, and even in some nail and hair salons. But will it be platinum?

If you visit the spa at the Ritz-Carlton in NYC, it can be. Since the spring, the spa has been offering The Platinum Rare Facial, a 90-minute treatment that is priced at $410, typically including product samples. Add a 20% tip and you're at $500.

According to the "Vain Glorious" department in The New York Times's T Magazine, "This ultra-pampering facial is more like a spa manicure and pedicure, massage and facial in one. It's performed by both a nail technician and an aesthetician -- the former soaks, scrubs and swathes the extremities in the brand's lavish products while the latter massages the neck and shoulders in between steps of the main event: a customized facial using La Prairie's Platinum Collection (including Cellular Cream Platinum Rare, which retails for $650 per ounce)."

Before the treatment, guests are invited to relax in the upscale locker room and lounge, outfitted with cool and soothing marble, a steam room with a tub of ice and cucumbers waiting outside, and a corner with chairs, fresh fruit, and dried snacks. Then guests select the music they wish to be played during the treatment. The signature seems to be the application of Cellular Cream Platinum Rare at the end of what the the Ritz calls "an experience that transcends the ordinary in every way with age-defying benefits."

Get Used to Shorter Spa Treatments (for Now)

The stress of working and living under tough economic conditions is enough to trigger the urge for a trip to the spa. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough cash around to lay out for that perfect facial or relaxing massage. Rather than give up, however, most Americans are compromising. Shorter treatments are becoming more common, as many realize that something is better than nothing.

In June this year, the International SPA Association found that treatments lasting 30 minutes or less grew in popularity. Forty-six percent of the ISPA's 3,200 members reported an increase in these shorter services ... and close to have saw the amount spent per visit fall year-over-year.

Interestingly, there is a changing of the guard afoot among spa visitors. In the past, Baby Boomers were the most frequent spa-goers, but Generations X and Y are starting to see the benefits of relaxation, according to a study by SpaFinder. For many spas, this may require a change in design and treatment menus, as younger guests may not be soothed in the same ways their parents were.

New Croatian Radison Blu Offers 100,000 Sq. Ft. Spa

The Radisson Blu Resort and Spa Dubrovnik just became the largest resort on Croatia's Dalmatian coast. The new property, which is only 11 miles from Dubrovnik International Airport, boasts more than 100,000 square feet of spa, sports and wellness facilities with treatments such as hydrotherapy and salt saunas. This is the first Anne Semonin spa to open in Croatia, and to celebrate the milestone, several exclusive treatments have bee developed.

The spa itself occupies 37,000 square feet along the Croatian coastline, with seven individual treatment rooms and two more for couples. An outdoor hot tub sits at the center of this layout. The Thalassotherapy Therma Stone Experience, 100% Active Ice Therapy Facial and Black Sand Scrub & Ocean Massage Ritual were developed specifically for the Radisson Blu – I guess giving three more damned good reasons to get on a plane for Dubrovnik.

Another 75,000 square feet is dedicated to a sports and wellness center. The 60-foot lagoon pool, waterfall and underwater vitality jet lounges sound simply seductive, and there are additional treatments built around these decadent aquatic amenities.

Pass on the cliche European destinations this year, and head out to the Dalmatian coast. The spa experience will be a far cry from the usual.

Raffles Amrita Spa in Dubai has launched a new line of treatments using Kerstin Florian International products -- the first spa in the Middle East to do so exclusively.

Acugems, Gemstone Facial Treatment

Gemstones have been used by various cultures for healing for millennia but now the Acugems Facial Rejuve treatment throws a modern twist on this ancient therapy. The therapy involves the use of gemstones, microcurrents and therapeutic light to re-educate facial muscles, encourage collagen production, smooth wrinkles and improve skin tone. The stones and color frequencies used depend on the individual consumer. Tourmaline is frequently used in the treatments because of its ability to maintain a positive charge on one end and a negative one on the other.

It takes a number of treatments to see lasting results. The Revive You spa in Stoneham, Massachusetts which offers the treatments suggests a set of 10 treatments which sells for $2,550. Their version of the treatment also includes a custom mask, exfoliating fruit enzyme, pore cleansing and brow design. Reporter Amy Saltzman of the Stoneham Sun tested out the treatment and describes the sensation of the Acutrone machine as a sharp tingle which is not painful. She found the treatment quite relaxing.

10 of the Strangest Spa Treatments

Bird dropping facials and snake massages may sound like something straight out of an episode of Fear Factor, but they're really part of the growing list of strange options you might have at a luxury spa near you. An ancient Japanese secret often used by Geishas and available at Diamond Hawaii Resort and Spa in Maui is a facial that starts with Nightingale excrement, which is reportedly full of enzymes that help keep the skin smooth, clear, and white. Or maybe a Hakali massage is more your style at Apuane Spa at the Four Seasons Resort Punta Minta, Mexico, where spine-free cactus paddles are used to rub in an alcohol called 'pulque,' which comes from the agave plant and is in the tequila family.

Other strange spa experiences that might trip your detox trigger include snake massages (exactly what they sound like -- snakes slithering up and down your back!), getting yourself covered head-to-toe in caviar, soaking in a huge tub of dark beer, and "cupping" -- a process where several cups are placed strategically along your back and then lit on fire to create suction.

Fear Factor or not, some of these sound awesome! (Some, not all...)

In addition to the usual Ritz-Carlton luxuries like feather beds, private porches, and oversized marble & granite bathtubs, the "Prada in the Pines" package will get the additional benefits of Club access, a men's or women's Prada Fragrance, a Prada Exfoliant Visage Facial, and in-room champagne and truffles.

The package starts at $1,109 per evening and is available for a limited time, this spring through fall.

Creme de la Mer Radiant Facial

The latest face fix from Creme de la Mer is a two-part system called The Radiant Facial, The facial is an eight-minute treatment that consists of the Radiant Primer, which uses an Anti-Irritant Marine complex to calm and soothe the skin and the Radiant Mast, a cotton mask embedded with tourmaline (the same gem that makes ionic blow dryers work so well). The Radiant Facial helps diminish the appearance of age spots, freckles and uneven pigmentation and helps prevent the appearance of future discoloration. They recommend using the facial twice the first week and then once a week afterwards. The package sells for $320.

Okeanos Club Spa

Okeanos is a Russian spa located in midtown Manhattan. The 4,500-square-foot spa opened in Ocotober and features Russian-themed treatments such as the traditional Banya and Platza, a sauna followed by a brisk brushing with birch leaves followed by a cold water plunge. Other services include a variety of massages, reflexology, manicures, pedicures and a body scrub with Black Sea salts.Their Jet Lag treatment includes a plataza treatment, Jet Lag facial, Let Lag Massage, Executvie Manciure, Over the Top pedicure and a complimentary lunch for $385.

The French Toast Facial

French toast for your face? I've seen chocolate body treatments before but this is the first time I've seen French toast as a facial treatment. The Asana Spa, which creates treatments for a variety of hotels and spas, has developed the French Toast Facial, a 50-minute treatment that blends Ayurvedic methods with ingredients used to make French toast. The treatment includes organic milk, whole egg and whole grain bread blended with Asana Spa Fresh Maple Syrup to hydrate the skin,Asana Spa Turmeric Herbal Blend, to detoxify and Asana Spa Clove Herbal Blend to help heal blemishes.
