Can 'Barefoot' Shoes Help You Get In Better Shape?

Last year, I wrote about the barefoot running trend for the New York Times, so when Terra Plana recently invited to me to try out their new minimalist running shoe with a renowned running coach, I was eager to give it a try. I've always been a somewhat reluctant runner, so this, I thought, might give me a boost to get in shape for summer.

Terra Plana, run by Galahad Clark, a seventh generation shoe maker (his family owns the footwear giant Clarks), has been one of the biggest proponents of the move toward stripped-down running shoes that mimic a barefoot feel but provide protection from city streets. In March, the company debuted its first performance running shoe, the Evo ($160). it has a super-thin rubber sole (4 millimeters, compared to an inch or more for a conventional padded running shoe) and weighs just eight ounces.

We've all heard that running barefoot might just be better for the body than wearing heavy running shoes, but it's not always feasible to run or desirable to run that way. A new foot-friendly solution can be found in the EVO performance shoe from Terra Plana. The shoe is a collaboration between Galahad Clark, owner of Terra Plana and Asher Clark, his cousin and head designer, both seventh generation shoemakers.

The EVO is designed to be like running barefoot but better. The minimalist running shoe weighs only eight ounces and has breathable mesh and lightweight micro fiber reinforcements. The soft rubber sole is just 4mm. The shoe comes in yellow, black, white, pink, blue and green and sells for $160.

The South Park area of Los Angeles has been booming lately. The area is the site of the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Staples Center and the "L.A. Live" project. This summer the big news was that a major grocery store returned to the area, signaling the growing residential contingent. EVO is a high-rise residence building in the neighborhood and is the only LEED certified high rise residence in L.A. The property includes a pool and sun terrace, fitness studio and rooftop entertainment lounge with an outdoor fireplace. Many units have beautiful horizon and city views. The building also has concierge service, a 24-hour lobby attendant and four levels of secure parking.

The last of Evo's sale-priced residences went on sale earlier this month starting in the mid $300,000s. Generally the condominiums are priced from the low-$400,000s to $3.7 million and range from 730 to over 3,500 square feet. Residences feature hardwood floors and wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, large, operable windows, decks, Juliet balconies and walk-in closets
