Oprah's Bespoke British Kitchen Maker Put Up for Sale

smallbone
Smallbone of Devizes, the luxury British handmade design firm that has built bespoke kitchens for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Dustin Hoffman and Elizabeth Hurley, is up for sale due to the economic downturn. The company, founded by Charles Smallbone in 1976, cited a drop in orders and concerns that a recent financing package "will not be sufficient" to rescue the company, the London Telegraph reports. Trading in the company's shares has been suspended while they look for a buyer. Smallbone, which has expanded into the US in recent years, caters to the top end of the luxury kitchen design market, with the average kitchen going for about $60,000 and the top of the line costing several times that. Smallbone is the latest in a line of UK "heritage brands" including Hardy Amies and Royal Worcester that are in danger of extinction due to the sad state of the economy.

The dress went on sale last year at Harrods as part of their "Timeless Luxury" promotion for £10,690.

Second place went to Audrey Hepburn's white flower patterned Givenchy dress, followed by Julia Roberts in black-and-white vintage Valentino at the 2001 Oscars. It's not the most exciting ring design I've ever seen but it's hard to fault the brilliance of Elizabeth Hurley's massive engagement ring. Vogue UK points us to a pic of the Chopard ring that Arun Nayer gave to her. It features a 15.09 carat Asscher cut diamond in a white gold setting with pave diamonds along the shank. The ring is from Chopard's Haute Joallerie collection and Chopard is also behind Hurley's wedding band of 20 square cut diamonds set in white gold.

Actress Elizabeth Hurley is scheduled to wed Indian businessman Arun Nayar in early March and is deeply engrossed in wedding plans, as are many brides-to-be. Unlike brides dreaming of a fairytale-inspired white wedding, Hurley is going for a traditional Indian-style wedding and will be wearing a £4,000 pink silk sari ($7,700) for the ceremony. The sari was designed by Tarun Tahiliani, who is best known for his modern takes on traditional Indian fabrics and styles. The ceremony will be held at the Devigarh palace in Rajasthan, western Indian desert state that is "known for its opulent palaces."
