Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Sells For $1.6 Million

When I read about some of these auctions I get so envious! How fun would it be to go to one of these events with a flag or paddle to wave around and practically unlimited funds to play with! Case in point, at a recent charity auction to raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe sold for $1.6 million. Not that it's not a great car, but it's since the actual value is estimated between $400,000 and $500,000 that's a pretty big jump for charity. And these Phantom Drophead Coupes are making of habit of selling high -- back in January a couple got $2 million for theirs at the Winter Wine Festival. I guess if you gotta have one then you gotta have one!

Mercedes to Build "Ocean Drive"

Four-door convertibles are on their way back, and fast. The "Ocean Drive" concept launched at the North American International Auto Show last January has found some traction with the powers that be at Mercedes-Benz, according to Motor Trend, which reported that the vehicle will be available in the 2011 model year. It will be the first four-door convertible in over forty years to go into production, though concepts such as ASC's take on the Chrysler 300 went over well.

The big 'vert, to be based on the luxurious S600, will most likely share the S600's beastly 510-horsepower 5.5L V12, though the extra weight from engineering the convertible could mean an even more powerful engine to haul all that extra weight. At any rate, the vehicle is expected to fetch easily over $100,000.

Motor Trend also reports that the Audi A7 four-door convertible, based on the A7 sedan planned for 2009, is in the works as well, though with a "coupe-sedan" and less expensive price tag.

2008 Phantom Drophead

"Mmm ... sexy."
"What?"
"This," I said, turning my laptop to show my father, who was sitting on the couch in my gameroom.
"Oh, you're right. Is the front as ugly as the sedan?"
This isn't really about the sedan, nor my couch. It's all about the 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe. The front doors are suicide. Seriously, how cool is that? The color is gorgeous, as is the grill and bonnet. Really, my only complaint is the wood slats just behind the rear seats. That kind of makes it look like a swim platform on a nice yacht tender. Under that chromed bonnet is a 453 horsepower 6.75 litre V12. Check out AutoBlog's hi-res photo gallery for all the pics of the $407,000 ride you can handle.
