Bon Christiani Dog Collars

Dog collars that are beautiful, durable, and sustainable are what bon Christiani is all about . The creative force behind the company, Jennifer Christiano, says she was initially inspired by two things: her background working with ancient Nubian jewelry at The Oriental Institute and a lack of beautiful but sturdy collar options for her German Shepherd, Padma. "There was nothing really interesting on the market for him. So, I took it upon myself to reach back in time and cultures, to create a unique piece for him."

When it comes to business bon Christiani operates on a model based in the Buddhist philosophy of "doing right by doing well." All the collars are equestrian grade and cruelty-free (5% of profits go towards sheltering animal survivors of biomedical research), made by hand by local master artisans, and created from start to finish with sustainability and the environment in mind. The collar shown here is called "Gainne" and features leather, your choice of bronze or sterling silver hardware, pretty Celtic 3-sided knots cast in pewter, and your choice of gemstone. Woman Builds $20,000 Dog House for 3 Pampered Pets

What does a $20,000 dog house look like? A lot like a regular house, only smaller and with furniture lower to the ground. 42 year old Tammy Kassis lives with her husband outside of Los Angeles and when an owl almost carried one of her 3 dogs away she decided to give them, Chelsea, Coco Puff, and Darla, a home of their own. She commissioned Alan Mowrer of La Petite Maison in Denver for the job and the result is an 11ft replica of the family home with luxury features like hardwood floors, heat, A/C, screened doors and windows, mini-blinds, handmade curtains, and landscaping complete with a white picket fence. She's even planning to install a plasma TV so the dogs can all watch Animal Planet together, their favorite show.

Mrs. Kassis was quoted as saying "My dogs are my life," but I can't help but wonder how much time are the dogs spending in this $20,000 doghouse instead of in the regular house with the family? Regardless, it's quite the accomplishment. See more shot, including the interior, in the gallery below.

Molly & June is a boutique for small dogs founded on the idea that not only does your dog appreciate quality craftsmanship because it fits better and is more comfortable to wear, but that dogs can pick up on the benefits of fine fashion as well because they get more positive attention and their owners are happier. Love your dog but are distressed over all the leather products made for him or her? Then take a gander at House of Dog, which offers only 100% cruelty-free pet products made from fine faux materials. Today is Blog Action Day, a day to celebrate greenness and highlight the need for a focus on climate change. To wit, small changes start at home, and can involve pet products too. Here are a few "green" brands that make pet products:

Fall is coming, and that means pampered pups are going to need a bed to keep them off the cold, hard floor, or the thin, unforgiving carpet. Never fear -- you can get Chien Vivant Couture Beds here! Barron's House of Treasures, which offers all kinds of luxury pet items, was offering 14 styles of Chien Vivant dog beds when I looked today, retailing for $1,496 - $1,748. The beds all have French-ish names, such as Le Bijou and Napolione and Marseilles. I viewed the Marseilles, and discovered it's custom (no returns) and is made all the high-quality materials you would demand for this price. Barron's has a full line of luxury items for pets, including jewelry, strollers, clothing, shoes, carriers, toys, accessories, and spa care (coat care). Plus there's a store just for fancy felines, Kitty Kat Boutique. My 17-year-old cats wouldn't tolerate clothing, but they might like something that's more up their alley, such as these comfy and fun items.

Designer Hanging Pet Feeders

Cats and dogs enjoy their food more, and have better digestion, when feeders are raised off the floor. Seattle-based These Creatures makes attractive, sturdy feeders that will make your pets more comfortable as well as look better than old bowls on the floor. You position the feeders by hanging them on the wall, thus customizing the height for your pet. The bowls are stainless steel and the feeders are 12 gauge, powder-coated steel.

The feeders are available in 45 breed-specific images for dogs, and in 3 picture designs for cats (not breed-specific, but more generic: cat w/bird, cat sitting, and squirrel). There are five color choices: limesicle, coral, pearl, parakeet, and charcoal. The feeders come in two sizes for cats, XS ($155) and S ($175). For dogs, the the size offered corresponds to the breed's size, so, a miniature Daschund style would be small, for $155, while the German Shepherd style would be larger, for $175, the Whippet style is $195, and the Labrador style is $235. You get the idea.

N.B. to the the company, however: I'm happy you have a style for the German Shepherd, but note the spelling: It's not Shepard.

Pet Airways Takes to the Skies

You know how awful your luggage sometimes looks after being batted around in a plane's cargo area. As a responsible pet owner, why would you put your pet through that? Not to worry -- Pet Airways has launched and is ready to help your pet travel safely and comfortably in the main cabin. Just launched this month, inaugural cities are New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. You needn't (and in fact, can't) fly with your pet. He or she flies with other "pawsengers," all safely ensconced in appropriately-sized Pet Airways-provided carriers and cared for by attendants on one of Pet Airways' five planes. Here's how it works. Fares right now range from $149 - $299; info can be found here.

You may need to do just a bit extra, though -- the airline flies out of smaller, regional airports right now, so an extra trip may be in order for you to drop off your pet, and the Pet Airways flight takes longer than a standard flight due to stops along the way. MSN did a good piece that offers more details.

As a pet owner, I offer my thought that traveling sans the pet and then picking him or her at the airport makes for a happier trip for all.

Should Dogs Wear Fur?

There just seems to be something wrong about a fur coat for a dog, an animal that nature has already provided with a coat of its own. But for small dog without a thick winter coat of its own there is the chinchilla fur coat from Tails and Company. There are plenty of fake fur dog coats on the market but this coat is real chinchilla with a price tag that might be higher than what it cost to buy your purebred pup, $1,700. As the description on the website says, "or the person who has it all, we are sure that you don't have this." But is there something fundamentally hypocritical about draping an animal in another animal?

The $4.2 Million Tiara - For a Dog

Watch in awe. That tiara is worth 4.2 million dollars. Average price for a good Maltese? $1,000 - $2,500 (according to Anna's Heavenly Maltese -- a site that astonishes, to say the least). Kanune, age 15, is a lucky dog!

The tiara was created by young Thai jewelry designer Riwin Jirapolsek, who reportedly used jewels from his mother's jewelry collection to make the very special crown. The tiara is made of titanium, and encrusted with 250 carats of emeralds and diamonds.

Jirapolsek told Reuters: "I will make a hair clip next time because my dog has to wear clips everyday otherwise its fur will block its view."

I'm all for loving your dog, but I sure hope his family also threw at least $4.2 million to charity this year.

Riwin Jirapolsek has no plans to sell the tiara, but I bet the dog has.

Mija Dog Beds by Wowbow

Mija Dog Beds, manufactured by Wowbow and offered through the Swedish online store PID.se, offer a clean-lined, more modern look than many traditional pet beds. Crafted from 10mm thick acrylic and furnished with luxury faux suede cushions filled with shredded memory foam, the line is from London-based designer and dog owner Kim Bull, who got tired of dog beds emblazoned in plaids or paw prints. The bed comes in small (8,332 SEK = $911, in today's exchange rate), medium (9,723 SEK = $1,062), and large (12,505 SEK = $1,366) and in different colors.

Enormous, Expensive Victorian Dog House

The title of this post does a good job at explaining exactly what this product is: it's a very large, very pricey house for your dog. I would argue that it's really more of a kennel because it has both a 6' x 8' fence-enclosed play area with a separate sleeping nook that's actually the dog house. The exterior is Victorian-themed with gables, gingerbread trim, and darling little shutters on the windows. Be careful if you have kids -- they'll probably want to take it over as a playhouse! $4,300

Florida Couple Pays $150,000 for Cloned Dog

A couple in Boca Raton, Florida, just took ownership of their new puppy, which just happens to be a clone of their old yellow lab, Sir Lancelot, who died last year. The couple had Lancelot's DNA frozen 6 years ago, and then paid $150,000 to have the dog brought back to life as a clone. It's the first time the procedure has been performed commercially.

I love my Maltese, but I don't think I would ever choose to have her cloned. I don't think I could ever look at the clone and not get a weird feeling! Someday I'll have to find some other way to cherish her memory.
