Warhol Screenprints Sell High At Auction

I was surprised that the screenprint portrait of Mao Zedong by Andy Warhol, with two bullet holes put there by "Easy Rider" star Dennis Hopper was only estimated at $20,000 to $30,000. To myself I speculated that it might eke out a price over $100,000. I was not even close. The work with two bullet holes sold for $302,500 at Christie's on Tuesday, more than 10 times its high estimate. The 1972 screenprint from Hopper's art collection is done in hues of mostly blues and greens. Hopper shot the artwork when startled one night. He showed Warhol the bullet holes, and the pair agreed to consider the work a collaboration. Warhol drew circles around the holes, labeling the one over Mao's right shoulder "warning shot" and the one at his upper left eyelid "bullet hole." Another famous Warhol screenprint from 1967 of Marilyn Monroe fetched $206,500, or about four times the pre-sale estimate.

Dennis Hopper's Furniture On Offer at Christie's

Last summer my colleague Deirdre Woollard covered the sale of Dennis Hopper's house and major works from his impressive collection of contemporary art. Now Christie's is offering a number of prized pieces of furniture that belonged the late actor, artist and aesthete. Tops among Hopper's design classics in Christie's Interiors sale in New York on Jan. 11 – 12 is a chrome and black leather chaise by Le Corbusier, estimated at $1,000 – $1,500; a cardboard "bubble chair" designed by architect Frank Gehry, estimated at $3,000 – $5,000; and an oak and black leather Eames chair with ottoman, estimated at $1,000 – $1,500. Also included are various photographs and works of art, including an Andy Warhol silkscreen of Marilyn Monroe estimated at $40,000 – $60,000, and even the actor's set of Tiffany & Co. teacups and desert plates, estimated at $200 – $300. A number of the items are being offered without reserve, so it's a good chance for Hopper fans to score a memento.

The Listing For Dennis Hopper's Compound Goes Live

A link on the Real Estalker website let me know that the listing for Dennis Hopper's Venice, California compound is now live. Last week it was announced that the entire property is for sale for $6.245 million. The property is a joint listing by Jade Mills and Jane Gavens, both with Coldwell Banker Previews International of Beverly Hills. A property website has a whole host of pictures taken by Berlyn Photography which are also in the MLS. The pictures show interior and exterior details off the space which includes the main residence designed by Brian A. Murphy, an art barn and three loft-style townhouses created by architect Frank Gehry.

Hopper was an artist and photographer himself and home displays an artist's sensibilities. The main house is constructed of corrugated steel, and the three townhouses are all open, loft-style spaces outfitted with modern furnishings and large art pieces. A garage featuring some of Hopper's motorcycles opens directly into the large art space. The property also includes the original bungalow-style cottage which was built in 1909 and is decorated in a more traditional style as befits its exterior. The lap pool also faces a small open pool house. Overall the compound extends to over 15,550 square feet of living space. The double provenance of this being both an actor's home and a home designed by the world's preeminent starchitect makes this a highly desirable home and a listing full of luscious pictures doesn't hurt.

Dennis Hopper's Art Compound Up For Sale

The late Dennis Hopper's art collection is headed to Christie's this fall and the place that housed it, his compound in Venice, California is about to hit the market. Coldwell Banker Previews International has announced that Dennis Hopper's home will hit the market at $6.245 million. The property is located in Venice's popular Abbot Kinney area and features an "Art Barn" and three loft-style townhouses created by architect Frank Gehry, as well as a main residence designed by Brian A. Murphy.

Hopper was an artist and photographer himself and his work is currently on display in a comprehensive exhibit at the Los Angeles MOCA. His home served as the center of his artistic output and the property was host to some of the top celebrities as well as important artists like Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein, many of whom also feature in Hopper's collection.

Gwyneth Paltrow Named the New Face of Tod's

Gwyneth Paltrow has been named the new face of Italian luxury goods brand Tod's in the wake of a short film she made for them which just debuted at Cannes. The ad campaign, shot by Mario Testino in Capri aboard dashing Tod's CEO Diego Della Valle's yacht, portrays "the uber luxurious, outdoors-y life of a beautiful Italian aristocrat from the heady days of the jet-set era," Vogue UK reports.

"Italian style is very sexy, very womanly and what I love is that it seems to have so many different inspirations," Paltrow told the mag. She replaces Sienna Miller, who starred in Tod's ads last year. The Cannes short, which was directed by Dennis Hopper, a longtime friend of Della Valle's, portrayed a day in the life of Gwyneth with her favorite Tod's bag. We have long been fans of Tod's classic driving mocs, probably the most comfortable shoes in the world.
