The Fashion Statement: Top Ten Trends for Spring 2011

New York fashion week at Lincoln Center is a wrap and we've tallied up the results. In a word? '70s. Want more words? Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver.

Fashion weeks in London, Paris and Milan have yet to dictate the top ten trends of Spring of next year, but here's an early take.

SHORTS: Everyone, and we mean everyone, showed shorts in their spring collections. Whether short and roomy at Badgley Mischka or long and blouse-y at Thakoon or almost Capri-length at Ralph Lauren, shorts are going to be the get for spring.

STUDIO 54: There were so much '70s and early '80s references this week, I could hear Charlie commercials in my head. Halston, famed in that era, showed drape-y colorful maxi dresses and caftans that could have been lifted straight out of the archives. Marc Jacobs showed brightly colored pantsuits and full-length halter dresses.

PRINT MADNESS: Spring is traditionally all about florals. Jason Wu's breezy blouses had cut-out posies. DNKY had tiny flower prints on youthful dresses. Michael Angel went the painterly route with a collection of beautiful multi-colored frocks.

FEMININE VERSUS MASCULINE: Jill Stuart typified the feminine push/masculine pull with high-water tuxedos followed by flouncy, frilly dresses accessorized with masculine belts. The juxtaposition was stunning.

CANDY COLORS: Michael Kors trotted out fuchsia and green. Rebecca Taylor favored orange. Cynthia Rowley went for yellow. Candy colors ruled the day.

Scenes from NY Fashion Week: DVF and DKNY (video)

Diane von Furstenberg and Donna Karan are the grand dames of New York Fashion Week. As befitting her legendary status, Diane von Furstenberg's line was titled "Goddess" and was inspired by Isadora Duncan. The line was also influenced by the colors of Greece, bright indigo, mustard yellow and plenty of prints. At a show attended by Sarah Jessica Parker and Anderson Cooper among others, von Furstenberg and her new creative director Yvan Mispelaere showcased casual luxe combining flowing halter tops paired with shorts, draped dresses with deep cleavage and of course, colorful new takes on von Furstenberg's iconic wrap dresses.

DKNY Studded Leather Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

The DKNY Studded Leather Shoulder Bag is great for those who love casual gold and browns. It's apparently inspired by the military but to me it looks much more celestial in nature. Golden studs in all sizes of round and pyramids dot every surface of the light brown leather exterior. It has a single adjustable top handle, a zip-top closure, two internal zip pockets, and a fun pop of color in the form of a purple twill lining. I wish it came in a silver version but it's a beautiful day bag nevertheless. $425

DKNY Quilted-Leather Chain-Trim Bag, Handbag of the Day

For a bag comprised of little more than leather and chains this Quilted-Leather Chain-Trim Bag by DKNY is actually quite feminine. Pink leather gets an edgy boost with silvertone chains and leather stitching along the trim, as well as quilting on the top flap. I especially like the tiered effect, something you often see in fashion but not so much on handbags. It also features your choice of a detachable leather cross-body shoulder strap or a chain one, exterior zip pocket, charm stamped with the designer's logo, and black satin lining. $345

American Express "By Invitation Only" at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2008

A few days ago I had the privilege of being a guest of American Express at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2008 in NYC. Aside from agonizing over what to wear (and realizing that of course no one was looking at me), it was a fun experience, and one I'd likely never get to have without this invite. As an AmEx guest, I got to go to a special "Skybox" to view the DKNY Spring 2009 show along with about 20 AmEx Platinum Card members, who were there (at the cool price of $700 each) to enjoy the day's events and luxuriate in special amenities as part of AmEx's "By Invitation Only" program. Also on hand were staffers from various companies associated with AmEx, who made sure the guests were comfortable and enjoying themselves. I chatted with one guest, who took advantage of the complimentary hair and makeup services that morning. She did have excellent hair. The room was too dim for me to see her makeup, but I'm sure it was lovely.

AmEx, a major Fashion Week sponsor for the second consecutive year, has long associated itself with fashion icons. On display in the tent's main lobby, front and center, was an AmEx booth that featured three iconic photos, used as part of AmEx's "I'm a Card Member" ads: Sammy Davis Jr., Diane Von Furstenburg and Venus Williams. Word is the photos changed throughout the show. Other sponsors also had booths in the main lobby, from the usual suspects, such as Judith Ripka and the Italian Trade Commission, to unexpected companies, such as Office Max and M&M's.

DKNY Plans Branded Bubbly

Donna Karan's fashion line DKNY is celebrating its 20th anniversary in traditional fashion, with a bottle of bubbly. Or many bottles in this case, the brand is working with Napa winery Chandon to create a DKNY sparkling wine which will have a special bottle design and will be available at the Chandon winery in Napa and on Chandon.com, as well as being given to guests attending the spring/summer 2009 runway show in New York.

Rachel Bilson Partners With DKNY On Jeans Line

Rachel Bilson and DKNY are hooking up to create a designer line of jeans called Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans. Rachel, most well-known for her leading role in the T.V. show "The O.C.", says that getting into fashion is something she's been interested in for a long time -- and she is reportedly the one who initiated contact with DKNY to see if they'd be interested in working with her. The line will be marketed to the same department and specialty stores that the brand is usually sold in, such as Macy's, Nordstrom, and Lord & Taylor.

DKNY Mixed Materials Satchel, Handbag of the Day
