500 Classic Cars up for Auction in Houston

How many cars is too many for one collection? 50? 100? How about 500? Evidently one collector thinks so, because he's selling off his entire stock of five hundred classic automobiles. Among those, 200 will be auctioned off with no reserve price whatsoever, making this the largest no-reserve auction in American history.

If you're wondering which long-established auction house will be handling such an enormous consignment, it's not Barrett-Jackson. It's not RM. It's not Gooding or Bonhams, either. It's Coys. The British auction house with offices in Italy, Germany and Monaco has never in its hundred-year history dabbled in the American market, but this strikes us as a good place to start. The 500-strong collection includes classics from both Europe and the United States, and will take place in Houston on September 19.

James Bond's Lotus Up for Sale

A Lotus Esprit Turbo (above) driven by Roger Moore as James Bond in 1981's For Your Eyes Only is being auctioned off in England this weekend. The copper metallic car with a ski rack fitted to the rear louvers is expected to fetch up to $200,000 at Coys' Blenheim Palace sale in Oxfordshire on Saturday the 18th. While not as iconic as the amphibious white Lotus Esprit driven by Bond in 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me - which as we reported previously went on the auction block last year - it's still an incredible piece of 007 memorabilia for any collector. The car on offer was previously sold in 2006 for $210,000, making it officially the world's most expensive Lotus Esprit Turbo.

COYS Monaco Auction Features 1982 Title-Winning Suzuki Motorbike

Once derided as knee-dragging crotch-rockets, motorcycles have been gaining more respect in the world of classic motors. We reported earlier that Pebble Beach would be welcoming classic motorbikes to its vaunted concours for the first time this year, and now a famed automotive auction house is gearing up to sell off a corral of historic motorcycles, including this noteworthy example. The Suzuki 500 XR40 you see here is the bike with which Franco Uncini won the 1982 MotoGP World Championship, the two-wheeled equivalent to Formula One. It would be the first and only world title the legendary rider would win, a crash in Holland the following year putting him temporarily into a coma and subsequently ending his career. Long since recovered, Uncini today acts as a safety representative for the series, making good use of their new BMW X6 M safety car. He'll also be on hand at the COYS auction in Monaco on May 18 where his title-winning bike is expected to go for as much as €350,000 ($470k), hitting the auction block together with several other historically important motorcycles.

Rod Stewart's Ferrari & Lamborghini Up for Auction

On March 12 London-based auction house Coys will sell two supercars from pop star Rod Stewart's personal collection. The first is a 2005 Ferrari 575 Superamerica (above), the other a 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Stewart is a longtime exotic auto enthusiast, and has owned a number of Ferraris. Back in October we reported that his Ferrari F430 Spider was for sale as well. His limited edition Ferrari 575 Superamerica, of which only 559 were made, is finished in classic red with a cream leather interior, has just 2,788 miles on it and is estimated at £70,000 - £85,000, or about $100,000 - $120,000. The Lamborghini is finished in baby blue with a blue and white leather interior, has just 2,243 miles and is estimated at £55,000 - £70,000, or about $80,000 - $100,000.
