In the superluxe world, we're used to this maneuver: add a few horsepower, shave a tenth or two, sew in a few extra threads, name your exclusive new interior color something like "Algerian Beet" and voilà, a 50-percent price premium for three-percent more car. On the surface, the Bentley Continental Supersports is a GT Speed that has gone on Biggest Loser, Extreme Makeover, and Alter Eco. But you know what they say about the proof and the pudding, so the question is whether the Supersports is a nameplate special or a genuinely higher evolution of the baller's favorite steed. We spent a day in the wilds of New Jersey and upstate New York, along with a few hours at Monticello Raceway to find out. Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce you to the first Continental you can feel.

Coming Attractions: Bentley Continental GTC Supersports Spied

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos, Green

Really, it was only a matter of time before spy photos of the Bentley Continental GTC Supersports made the rounds. After all, there was never really any doubt that the German-owned maker of high-end luxury cars would eventually cut the top off its latest sportster, in this case powered by the most powerful production version of the automaker's 6.0-liter W12 powerplant in history.

For those that like to keep track of such things, this would be the eighth derivative of the Continental platform – the others being the GT coupe, GTC cabrio, Flying Spur sedan, Speed versions of each and the Supersports coupe. If it does indeed see the light of day, expect the GTC Supersports to boast a similar weight reduction as the coupe (243 pounds, in that case) along with carbon ceramic brakes and the deletion of the rear seats. Oh, and flex-fuel capability... at some point.

Bentley Reportedly Delays Flex-Fuel Capability for 2010 Continental Supersports

While the environmental merits of any 621 horsepower, twelve-cylinder behemoth that's capable of traveling at speeds of up to 204 miles per hour are (to say the least) debatable, Bentley hasn't exactly been shy about touting the green angle of its upcoming 2010 Continental Supersports.

Add one more black mark to the car's eco credibility as word comes by way of Green Car Advisor that U.S. laws and "engineering challenges" that include the fitment of hardened valve seats in the W12 engine mean that the first 200 Supersports imported to the United States won't actually be flex-fuel capable.

Ah well, somehow we doubt that buyers willing to plunk down the $267,000 it takes to park a twin-turbocharged Continental Supersports in their driveway will be all that concerned with pumping ethanol in the tank.

Let Them Eat Cake: Bentley Unveils Continental Supersports in Geneva

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

With environmentalists pushing for more earth-friendly transport, surely gas-guzzling behemoths like Bentleys would be going the way of the do-do. Not so fast, says Bentley, as the British luxury automakers, famous for making cars that more closely resemble locomotives with enormous engines, has revealed its game plan to take the Winged B badge into the environmental age.

Called the Continental Supersports, the concept car is the first of what Bentley hopes will be many ethanol-burning vehicles it will offer. Not only does the Supersports offer improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, but it is actually the most powerful, fastest Bentley to date. With 621 horsepower on tap and a zero-to-sixty time of an amazing 3.7 seconds, the Bentley Continental Supersports hit the scene in Geneva to say that we can have our cake and eat it, too.
