Conan O'Brien Lists His New York City Penthouse

Conan O'Brien, is finally, sadly out at NBC (and with a sweet $45 million kiss off to boot) but that doesn't mean he is returning to New York City to live. In fact the New York Post reports that O'Brien's massive Central Park West penthouse duplex at the Majestic is "quietly being shopped around" for a heavy price tag of $35 million (alas no listing yet). The prime co-op unit is composed of two units, an 18th-floor penthouse that O'Brien bought in 2007 for around $10 million plus an already combined unit residence on the 17th floor. The south-facing home has three terraces and views of Central Park West. The twin towered Art Deco styled Majestic has 238 apartments. It was once home to some of the former heads of the Luciano crime family (later called the Genovese crime family) including Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello. The Real Estalker reminds us that in early 2008, O'Brien and his wife Liza paid $10.75 million for a six-bedroom home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, could he be staying in Los Angeles to take the helm at another late night show? Conan O'Brien Didn't Buy Mine That Bird, The Real January Thoroughbred Sales Results

For those of you who thought the sale of Mine That Bird to Conan O'Brien was the big news in thoroughbred racing, it was just a skit. The "real" Mine That Bird, winner of last year's Kentucky Derby and pictured above, has been on vacation in New Mexico since the Breeder's Cup Classic. In fact his trainer Chip Woolley reports that he does not intend to return the winning horse to racing until later in the season and possibly only running four races in preparation for the Breeder's Cup Classic to be held a Churchill Downs. Just as a note, there is discussion that no one would pay $4.8 million for him as he is gelding and can not be used for breeding which compromises his value compared to other Derby winners.

There were however the first legitimate thoroughbred sales of 2010 taking place recently at Keeneland in Kentucky. The January Horses of All Ages Sale was held at the facility from January 11-15th. For those who have never seen a thoroughbred auction in progress, below there is a short video clip to give you a feel of how it all works at Keeneland.

Like all luxury markets horse sales have been adversely effected by the economy and those in the thoroughbred sales business have been concerned about how their business will change. The sale took in $23,895,100 in five days which is down over 27% from last year's six day sale. There were fewer horses sold and in general everybody noticed the market's effect of the sales. That being said, there were some bright spots, most notably Bon Jovi Girl a multiple stakes winner went for $950,000. The highest price paid for a yearling was brought in by Medaglia d'Oro a colt going for $280,000.

Conan O'Brien: Divorce from NBC is Ugly and "Crazy Expensive"

If you can't beat them and you are leaving anyway, why not spend all their money?

That seems to be Conan O'Brien's philosophy this week as he embarked on a series of skits and extraordinarily expensive props to put on the appearance that he intended to blow through the Tonight Show budget in one week.

On Wednesday he trotted out a Bugatti Veyron, a rare and pricey sports car that costs as much as some private jets. O'Brien unveiled the Bugatti Veyron, showing the million dollar car embellished with mouse ears and whiskers. O'Brien claimed to have purchased the sports car.

Last night, he upped the ante by bringing out Kentucky Derby winning racehorse Mine That Bird adorned with a mink "Snuggie" and by showing restricted Super Bowl footage. This "crazy expensive" skit, he claimed, cost NBC $4.8 million.
