Belle Fleur Candles for Valentine's Day

Belle Fleur candles for Valentine's Day

Of course it makes sense for one of New York's hottest florists to have founded a luxury fragrance house. Nothing quite captures the heavenly scent of fresh-cut roses, but Belle Fleur Home candles by Meredith Waga Perez come just about as close as you can get.

This Valentine's day Belle Fleur has put together an enviable package incorporating gems from both their home line and their flower studio. Your lucky Valentine will receive one of their infamous bouquet of flowers designed in a leather corset covered vase, as well as a Mayan Tuberose candle to keep the sentiment alive for days to come.

Ancient Mayan culture held the divine scent of the tuberose sacred to their goddess of beauty and love. With accent notes of gardenia, amber vanilla and ylang ylang, the Mayan Tuberose candle is an unforgettably rich scent sure to set a decadent mood in any home.

The Valentine's Day Special is $250, with delivery available within Manhattan. Call to order: 1.212.254.8703 and be sure to check out the complete home line including giftsets, home fragrance and more.

Sniff, Scented Candles For Dogs

Scented candles are de rigueur for Valentine's Day but what if your Valentine walks on four legs? Sniff is a new scented candle that uses holistic aromas to benefit man (or women's) best friend. After all, dogs can identify smells somewhere between 1,000 to 10,000 times better than their human friends.

The organic dog-friendly candles include scents like "A Day in the Hamptons" (a sunny summer day scent with rosemary, basil and spearmint); "Splendor in the Grass" (green pastures with tomato leaves and cedarwood); "Field of Dreams"(soothing lavender, vetiver and sandalwood); "Friends to the Rescue" (a mix of lemongrass, eucalyptus and grapefruit held together by geranium, cyprus and ginger with a finish of mangosteen to keep pests away) and "Fart & Away" (a mix of of floral ylang ylang, tuberose, white tea, myrtle and fennel for the smelly dog). Sales through February support Miami-Dade Animal Services Foundation, a foundation dedicated to ending the unwanted pet population with spay/neuter programs in Miami. Candles sell for $32 each.

'Lapsang Noir' Candle by Reed Space, Joya, and Baxter of California

Filed under: Cosmetics and Fragrance, Men's Style

Lapsang Noir Candle
Sometimes it takes a major collaboration to create something small but special, and that seems to be the case in how this scented candle came to be. Three brands came together to create it: lifestyle boutique Reed Space, men's grooming experts Baxter of California, and home ambiance and fragrance innovators Joya. The result is an uber-masculine pitch black candle that's smell is described as "smoky and steaming" with black Lapsang Souchong Tea, notes of exotic Indonesian herbs, and a warm white floral mix that includes Tuberose, Pikaki, Ylang Ylang and Jacaranda blossoms. $151 for a full kilo.

Cire Trudon Opens In New York City

The world's oldest candle company, Cire Trudon, has finally gotten around to opening a second store... after 126 years.

The Parisian wax purveyor opened its doors in the 6th Arrondissement in 1884 and held off on expansion plans until recently, when a Bond Street location became its US home (perhaps they were waiting to see how the Sino-French war would turn out). Cire Trudon's history stretches even further back than the Belle Époque though, as founder Claude Trudon started his candle business in 1643 and was providing wax to the French royal family by the beginning of the 18th century. Modeled after the Galerie des Glaces at Versailles, the boutique's hand-aged mirrors, stucco walls and Amish furniture are meant to evoke a centuries old Paris shop, one that mixes antiques with new pieces dedicated to all things melted wax.

Cire Trudon's Bowery location offers a playful selection of candelabras, snuffers and wax busts of Napoleon, along with their signature candles, and will surely satisfy stateside fans of the brand who have been waiting, for a while.

Luxist Giveaway: Baroness von Neumann Candle Collection

One of the best thing about the cooler months is that it's candle season. It's time to curl up on the couch, legs tucked under a cozy throw and savor the indoor life. A new line of scented candles from Los Angeles socialite and lifestyle expert Baroness Monica von Neumann offers an elegant new option for sending delicious scent through the air. Baroness Monica von Neumann is a businesswoman and former Dior and Yves St. Laurent model who defines herself as one part Martha Stewart and another part Wendy Williams, mixing elegance with just a touch of Detroit soul. After taking care of her ill husband Austrian Baron John von Neumann, who died of brain cancer in 2003, she nurtured an interest in home decor and design eventually leading to her own lifestyle products line.

The candles have a 70+ hour burning time, longer than many similar candles. The candles use an all-natural soy-based wax and cotton wick that burns cleanly without the creation of soot. The candles are packed in a simple ivory and gold packaging featuring the von Neumann family crest. They'd also make a lovely hostess gift for the coming holiday season.

The new line comes in four scents inspired by Baroness von Neumann's jetsetting life: Atlas: sandalwood, Ceylon cinnamon and mahogany; Fete: clove bud, mandarin and Norwegian pine; Modena: orange blossom and lemon leaf; and Savon: jasmine, damask rose and red amber. The candles each sell for $38.50 and are available from the von Neumann website. Today we are giving away a set of all four candles valued at $154.

Baobab Platinum, A Gentleman's Candle

Belgian candle maker Baobab, known for their handmade collection of African-influenced scents, injects some refined manhood into the home decor world with a platinum creation.

There's something about the combination of scented wax and an open flame that seems to negate masculinity, whether due to the enduring legacy of Yankee Candle or the inane obsession with dividing inanimate objects into "his" and "hers." Some candle manufacturers surmount this by festooning the jar with skulls or dying the wax black, which is like wrapping a pirate flag around a fruit basket. But since 2002, Baobab has quietly been producing an entire line of perfumed candles that actually seem appropriate for the boardroom, bar or (his) bedroom. For one, the line takes its olfactory inspiration from Africa (it was created in Tanzania) with scents like Masai Spirit, White Rhino and Zanzibar Spices, all developed in the French fragrance capital of Grasse. The base note for the line is rooted in cedar sandalwood, a warm and spicy foundation to build each individual expression. There are also five sizes to choose from, from the 50gr Mini Max candle to the towering seven-wick, 7.5kg Maxi Max, which has a burn time of 800 hours.

And now Baobab has introduced a platinum jar edition, available across the line. The silvery finish is an elegant and understated display that will hold its own amongst club chairs and single malts. With all that cigar smoke and musty leather in the room you're going to need something that smells good.

Luxist Giveaway: Himalayan Trading Post Candle

Himalayan Trading Post candles take a long journey before they get to your doorstep. The Himalayan Trading Post wood candles are hand carved in a small Eastern Indian town near the Himalayas, then sent back to HTP's headquarters in Georgia where they are filled with an elixir of soy and bees wax, and essential oils.

The business was started by a single entrepreneur, Julia Leaphart who began selling candles at local craft fairs and festivals. With a lot of hard work and high-quality merchandise the business quickly grew and she now sells to over 1000 retailers worldwide. She grew up in a small town in the Himalayas and using wooden and glass containers that are sourced from small manufacturers in northern India is a way for her to maintain connection with the land she loves. Himalayan Trading Post works with manufacturers directly ensuring transparent working conditions and better supplier relationships.

Today we are giving away one HImalayan Trading Post wooden barrel candle. The wooden barrel is made from recycled old teak and lined with tin and filled with a natural wax blend with an 80-hour burn time. It has a matching lid with a soft patina. The scent for our giveaway candle is Wild Green Fig, a blend of earthy fig melded with top notes of fresh leafy greens, with rich black currant, and bottom notes of cassis, lilies, amber and musk. A perfect scent to burn on a late summer or early fall evening. This candle retails for $32.

Layering Home Fragrances

Filed under: Decor, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Slatkin & Co. Candle and layering scentsOne of the things that Luxist Awards Expert Panelist Harry Slatkin is known for is home fragrances. Slatkin is founder of Slatkin & Co., the premier home fragrance brand celebrated for its scent experience and design (now a division of Bath & Body Works). He oversees product development for all the home fragrance brands under Bath & Body Works, the country's largest bath and body retailer with over 1,650 stores.

In this video, Slatkin explains how to layer home fragrances.

"Start with your favorite," he says. "Buy a fragrance that appeals to you. Start there. Then go back to the store and pick another one that you like that will set a different mood and then try to combine them. Chances are that it is going to work. But if they don't, then try another combination."

Home decorating has become very expensive. To recover one chair, for example, can be very expensive.

"One scented candle changes the entire ambiance of a room," says Slatkin. "You can have a person come over several times to your home and they may think you have changed something just from the ambiance of smell."

Combining scents creates different moods. "You can have four different scents and create 16 different moods," he adds.

Seven Day Timothy Jay Candle Giveaway: Day Seven--Brulee

Filed under: Decor, Cosmetics and Fragrance

Today is the final day of our Seven Day Timothy Jay Candle giveaway.

People come to the West Coast for a variety of reasons, fame, fortune, not too many people come to end up as candlemakers. But Tim Sullivan is no ordinary candlemaker. A Madison Avenue ad exec for 25 years, Sullivan left behind the East Coast and the corporate world for something deeper. In 1996 he started off making candles in his tiny kitchen in West Hollywood. What started with one scent has evolved into a studio and store where the Timothy Jay candles are lovingly poured and packaged. There is now a separate private label line and a new online store.

When it comes to scented candles it's often the little details that make a difference. The 10 ounce glasses are heated before pouring to make sure that the wax settles evenly. Fragrances and colors are added by hand. One detail that is particularly welcome is the addition of a felt pad to the bottom of the candle so that a hot candle doesn't mar your tabletop. But it's really the scents that are the magic, they are present but not cloying filling a room with a subtle perfume.

Today's giveaway: Brulee Serenity Bowl: I saved my favorite scent for last. This one is delicious, a real masterpiece. It combines the yummy food vanilla notes with sweet citrus. It's the sort of candle you'd want to burn at an open house if you were trying to sell your home, it makes the room smell heavenly and puts everyone in a good mood.

The description: "A much "decorated" French word to describe burnt cream...and wait till you burn our candle. The cream is mixed with vanilla, mandarin orange and almonds. The fragrance just wafts in the air and reminds you of what can happen when the gifts of nature are blended by a Cordon Bleu chef." It sells for $37.
