IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) & the Canadian Seal Hunt, Charity of the Day
Filed under: Charity, Charity of the Day
Canada's annual commercial seal hunt is the largest commercial hunt of marine mammals on the planet! Seals are killed with wooden clubs, ice pick like tools and guns. In 2001, a study was conducted by an independent team of veterinarians who found that a shocking 42 percent of the seals that are killed, are skinned alive while conscious! In addition, over 90% of the seals that die are pups around 3 months old! There have been over one million seal pups killed in the past three years alone! One of the many organizations opposing this brutal slaughter is IFAW Canada. With more than 50,000 members (many of whom are concerned Canadians), the IFAW's courageous actions have drawn international attention to the plight of the seal pups and successfully rallied worldwide condemnation of the hunt. Thanks to IFAW's continued vigilance, it is now illegal to hunt whitecoat seal pups off Canada's east coast. A victory, but there is much work ahead, as the hunt for other seal pups continues. Join IFAW in their mission, donations of time and money are needed to fight this battle. Visit the website to learn more!
