Orbita Bergamo 40 Watch Winder Furniture

Orbita Bergamo 40 Watch Winder Furniture
The more automatic watches you get the harder it is to store and keep track of them. Serious collectors end up buying more and more watch winders, but at a point you just want a few massive winders to house your collection (versus dozens of smaller ones). The good news is that a few select companies make high-capacity watch winders, and they are serious invenstments unto themselves. New from US-based Orbita is the Bergamo 40 range of watch winder cabinets.

The Bergamo 40 starts with a very simple concept - a watch winder for 40 watches that can disguise itself as piece of fine furniture. The rear part of this cabinet can raise or lower and contains 40 individual watch winders (that have their own motors and are individually programmable). Via a remote or switch on the unit, the winders can lower into the cabinet - which from the front then looks like just a cabinet. If you want to showcase your watches in an office or room that might have people walking in it, it is a good idea to be able and "hide" your collection. The cabinet itself is made in Italy, and can be ordered in a variety of woods, finishes, and styles. Consultation with Orbita is required to get one, and each is custom made. Prices for the Orbita Bergamo 40 watch winder cabinet starts at about $60,000, and each takes about 3-4 months to make.

Orbita Avanti 8 Watch Winder Cabinet

orbita avanti 8
Orbita, the North Carolina based maker of watch winders, has recently adapted their popular Avanti 12 watch winder line to the new Orbita Avanti 8. It is a well-made wood cabinet (available in two different types of wood - Macassar and Madrona Burl) that comes in either a pedestal or wall mounted unit. Glass doors open to reveal eight programmable watch winder units. Orbita has long since been a creator of enthusiast-oriented watch winder units that make living with a collection of mechanical watches so much more convenient.

The Avanti 8 removed the bottom third row of watch winder from the cabinet. The multi-purpose space can be used to store additional watch items or accessories. I also understand that Orbita has some modules that can fit in this space. Accordingly, the Avanti 8 is less expensive than the Avanti 12. The unit is constructed mostly from wood, carbon fiber, glass, steel, brass, chrome, or gold plated steel hinges. The Avanti units are powered via an AC/DC adapter and is 20 inches tall, by 23 inches wide, and 9 inches deep (weighs in at 42lbs). Although it is priced at about $10,000, it is considered mid-range in the world of quality watch winders from a cost perspective.

Mirror Collage Plasma TV Cabinet

Some plasma televisions are works of art in and of themselves and to hide them would be a shame. But most aren't so fabulous and are better kept out of sight when not in use. There are lots of clever ways to conceal a flat-screen television - I've seen them behind panels, paintings and drapes as well as inside pop-up entertainment centers. But as far as a remedy to the unsightly black hole of the television, this one gets points for creativity. Wood-framed beveled mirrors of different sizes overlap in an artful arrangement that not only hides your flat-screen television, but adds light and space to your room. The overall dimensions are 71"W x 11"D x 51" and the cabinet will accommodate most 50" plasma televisions. $4649.

His designs include toys, sculptures and furniture with a fantastical theme and a childlike look that belies their sophistication. His Showtime multi-leg cabinet is a prime example. It is modular and can be used with a variety of different leg styles. The old MGM musicals inspired Hayon's Showtime collection, which includes sofas, chairs and tables that turn 1940s glamour on its ear. The cabinet comes in white, blue or black. Secret Cabinet

While I wouldn't mind finding a secret entrance to another place at the back of my wardrobe, the scenario seems fairly unlikely. The closest that I can probably hope to come by purchasing furniture that was designed with a much less magical secret, like the Secret Cabinet being sold by Anthropologie. The grey cabinet is made of poplar and appears to be a five-door dresser from the outside, but once the hinged door is opened, a sunny yellow interior with adjustable shelves is revealed. It measures 76"H x 43.5"W x 20.5"D. Price: $1,998.

Blend Wardrobe

A wardrobe is just a place to keep your clothes, but by calling the cabinet a "vertical storage space," it suddenly sounds much more purposeful and versatile, which is probably why that descriptor is applied to Karim Rashid's Blend. Made of lacquered wood, the piece has a tremendous visual appeal to it and is certainly unique - no matter what you decide to call it. It is available in one and two-door versions Price: $2,600.

Fake Riches Cabinet

Designer Helen Waites has come up with this brilliant Fake Riches Cabinet, which not only allows your dishes to stand in as artwork when not in use, but also adds some grandeur to what would otherwise be plain white plates. The cabinet has two layers, a back rack and an overlying glass face, which is decorated with pale blue patterns of the type often seen on antique plates. The white plates cause the designs to pop out, giving the impression that you actually have antique china in the display. We disagree with the possibility of gaining a "sense of worth" from such a cabinet, but that doesn't mean we like it any less.
