I'd never heard of Paul & Joe till I read about the line in Allure. The line often features quirky beauty products, and this one is unlike any lipstick I've seen. New for fall are three Lipstick C colors with cat-shaped tips (cute or creepy? the verdict is still out ... ). The line comes in three colors (L to R) Claire de Lune, Over the Moon, and Moon Shadow. All are creamy, and slightly shimmery thanks to Paul & Joe's "Secret d'Or," a blend of three champagne frosts that appear different depending on the viewing angle. The tubes are outfitted in the brand's newest fabric prints.

Gift Your Cats a Tree House Complete With a Real Tree

Leave it to Hammacher Schlemmer to come up with something this high-end for your cat(s). The Feline Tree House is made from mature dragonwood trees harvested from sustainable forests in Florida and Georgia and is built during a 16-hour process that requires 1,000 individual cuts. The tree is left in its natural state -- gnarled branches, bark, lichen, and all -- and the platforms are custom-cut to fit each tree. It's very house-like indeed, with with cedar shutters, shaker shingles, and wall-to-wall frieze carpeting. Spacious too: 18" x 22" with carpeted 16" square and 16" x 24" perches, as well as a carpeted cradle tucked among the branches, all permanently attached to the trunk for stability. All carpeting (except the cradle's) is held in place with hook-and-loop fasteners, making cleaning easy. Realistic camilla silk foliage and two hanging cat toys complete the house. Minimal assembly; 72" H x 19" W x 28" D, 92 lbs. At $874.95, this is for cats who are on the "nice," not the "naughty," list this holiday. Though truth be told, if I had the room and could justify the cost, I'd get this for my cats anyway!

Today is Blog Action Day, a day to celebrate greenness and highlight the need for a focus on climate change. To wit, small changes start at home, and can involve pet products too. Here are a few "green" brands that make pet products:

Fall is coming, and that means pampered pups are going to need a bed to keep them off the cold, hard floor, or the thin, unforgiving carpet. Never fear -- you can get Chien Vivant Couture Beds here! Barron's House of Treasures, which offers all kinds of luxury pet items, was offering 14 styles of Chien Vivant dog beds when I looked today, retailing for $1,496 - $1,748. The beds all have French-ish names, such as Le Bijou and Napolione and Marseilles. I viewed the Marseilles, and discovered it's custom (no returns) and is made all the high-quality materials you would demand for this price. Options, which cost extra, include monogramming and Swarovski bed legs. For more details, click on the bed of your choice from this selection.

Barron's has a full line of luxury items for pets, including jewelry, strollers, clothing, shoes, carriers, toys, accessories, and spa care (coat care). Plus there's a store just for fancy felines, Kitty Kat Boutique. My 17-year-old cats wouldn't tolerate clothing, but they might like something that's more up their alley, such as these comfy and fun items.

Designer Hanging Pet Feeders

Cats and dogs enjoy their food more, and have better digestion, when feeders are raised off the floor. Seattle-based These Creatures makes attractive, sturdy feeders that will make your pets more comfortable as well as look better than old bowls on the floor. You position the feeders by hanging them on the wall, thus customizing the height for your pet. The bowls are stainless steel and the feeders are 12 gauge, powder-coated steel.

The feeders are available in 45 breed-specific images for dogs, and in 3 picture designs for cats (not breed-specific, but more generic: cat w/bird, cat sitting, and squirrel). There are five color choices: limesicle, coral, pearl, parakeet, and charcoal. The feeders come in two sizes for cats, XS ($155) and S ($175). For dogs, the the size offered corresponds to the breed's size, so, a miniature Daschund style would be small, for $155, while the German Shepherd style would be larger, for $175, the Whippet style is $195, and the Labrador style is $235. You get the idea.

N.B. to the the company, however: I'm happy you have a style for the German Shepherd, but note the spelling: It's not Shepard.

Pet Airways Takes to the Skies

You know how awful your luggage sometimes looks after being batted around in a plane's cargo area. As a responsible pet owner, why would you put your pet through that? Not to worry -- Pet Airways has launched and is ready to help your pet travel safely and comfortably in the main cabin. Just launched this month, inaugural cities are New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. You needn't (and in fact, can't) fly with your pet. He or she flies with other "pawsengers," all safely ensconced in appropriately-sized Pet Airways-provided carriers and cared for by attendants on one of Pet Airways' five planes. Here's how it works. Fares right now range from $149 - $299; info can be found here.

You may need to do just a bit extra, though -- the airline flies out of smaller, regional airports right now, so an extra trip may be in order for you to drop off your pet, and the Pet Airways flight takes longer than a standard flight due to stops along the way. MSN did a good piece that offers more details.

As a pet owner, I offer my thought that traveling sans the pet and then picking him or her at the airport makes for a happier trip for all.

I'm always on the lookout for interesting, functional products that (I hope) my cats will like and that won't make my home look junky. I recently found these cool corrugated cardboard cat scratchers at Design Public. Created primarily with recycled materials and with water-based glue, the scratchers/loungers are non-toxic and 100% recyclable. Swarovski Crystal-Encrusted Cat Flap

Finally, some bling for cats! UK pet door manufacturer Doors4Paws now offers a Swarovski crystal-encrusted cat flap decorated with more than 1,000 crystals. The Hertfordshire-based firm sells a number of standard designs as well. Sarah Gildersleeve, Doors4Paws co-owner, told The Daily Mail, "We've already received a barrage of calls, and people are requesting all sorts of individual designs -- from getting their cat's name painted on the top to the crystals. ... At the end of the day, they're a bit of fun. There's so much doom and gloom these days. We want to put a smile on people's faces." £1,000, or about $1,407, based on today's exchange rate. Not yet available on the company's site, but check back -- the company seems to be just getting going.

A New Luxury Pet Hotel Opens in London

Why should the human members of your family be the only ones who get to enjoy the perks of taking a vacation? In most cases when the family goes on vacation the pets are either left behind in an empty house or they're taken to a cramped and crowded boarding facility -- either way they pretty much just survive until the vacation is over and life returns to normal.

But what if you could take them to a luxury hotel of their own? Elmtree, in London, is offering just that service. Elmtree is a new luxury pet hotel that offers all the usual boarding amenities like individual kennels, accommodation of any special diet requirements, and daily walks, plus they also have an on-site grooming parlor, luxury pet bedding options (if you don't want to bring your own), exercise and play rooms, and even in-kennel web cams so you can keep constant tabs on your pet while you're away. Sounds like Fido and Frisky might actually have a good time! Prices start at £20/day for dogs and £12/day for cats.

"Cats in Style" by Marly Gommans

The World of Rare Cats and Dogs: Meet the Ashera and the Lundehund

If you're an animal lover you probably have at least one cat or dog, if not several. And whether you're into mixed breeds from the local animal shelter or purebreds worthy of showing, pretty much all pet owners think their little baby is the most beautiful and unique of all. And although that may be true (I've got 3 unique sweeties of my own) there is something to be said for which kinds of cats and dogs really are the most unique, or in this case, the most rare. When it comes to rare breeds different experts have different opinions, but regardless who you ask certain names keep popping up.

The rarest cat breeds seem to be the Sokoke, the Egyptian Mau, and the Ashera. Of those the Ashera is the most expensive($20,000+), the Sokoke the most exotic (from the wilds of Africa), and the Egyptian Mau has the coolest history (lived with the Egyptians).

As for dog breeds, the one that keeps popping up on all the 'rare' lists is the Lundehund, or Norwegian Puffin Dog. Bred originally by the Vikings to hunt Puffins its most unique characteristic is its incredible flexibility in the joints. Other rare breeds include Otterhounds (about 350 in the US) and Stabyhounds (about 100 in the US).
