Bottega Veneta Crocodile-effect leather messenger bag
Upgrade your staple black leather look with this Bottega Veneta Crocodile-Effect Leather Messenger bag. It's slouchy, weathered, and casual, but also a little tough, edgy, and even glamorous. It features faded black leather with crocodile-effect trim, signature intrecciato detailing, and an adjustable shoulder strap with padding. The fold-over flap front closes via a small tab with a press stud (cute but not the most convenient to fasten) plus there's a pocket on the outside rear and several inside the roomy interior. It's fully lined in black leather and brown suede. $9,500

Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Bottega Veneta Clutch
Bottega Veneta's intrecciato leather always looks polished and classy and this very simple envelope clutch really makes the unique texture and pattern the star of the show. The Intrecciato Leather Clutch is shown here in a bright and versatile beige and features an interior that's divided into two equal compartments. It has pewter hardware in the form of a small twist-lock closure on the front flap and other than that it has no external embellishments. Lined in a combination of taupe suede and yellow leather with one interior zip pocket. $2,950

Bottega Veneta BVX Watch

Filed under: Handbags, Timepieces / Watches

bottega veneta watch
Luxury handbag and accessories maker Bottega Veneta will soon release their first watch called the BVX. The brand which prides itself on "brandless" styles, offers mostly bags with no brand logo on them. The idea is for them to be a "brand in the know," offering clues to true insiders as to the maker of the bags - but simply presenting themselves as good looking items to everyone else. It is an approach that has worked for Bottega Veneta.

The same ethos holds true for the BVX watch. The strap of the watch is in the same woven leather style as many of the brand's bags. The dial contains no branding or badging. Above I include an image of one of the brand's bags next to the watch for comparison's sake. The watch strap is quite well done - offering the woven pattern with a solid siding to prevent against wear. The watch case itself is in PVD black toned titanium and has an interesting dial from a design perspective. The dial color is a sort of matte brown (they call it "brunito"), with white dot style indicators and large conical hands. There is a large black "screw" that appears to be located on the sapphire crystal where the hands connect in the center of the watch case.

Specifically intended to be a unisex watch, the case is 41mm wide. Design is well, a bit odd for my tastes, but it certainly is distinctive and easy to read. Bottega Veneta likes their products to be ambiguous in terms of their luxury stature. Meaning you don't know whether the items are expensive or not when you see them. True enough it is difficult to determine that the BVX timepiece is a luxury item. The best hint is knowing that inside the watch is a Girard-Perregaux made GP4500 automatic movement with a solid gold rotor. Girard-Perregaux is said to make most of the watch actually. The Swiss watch brand has been working with other fashion brands as of late, as I recently mentioned them being the official watch maker of Ermenegildo Zenga. Price for the Bottega Veneta BVX watch will be $14,600 and available starting next month.

Bottega Veneta Large Lambskin Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Bottega Veneta Large Lambskin Shoulder BagThe Bottega Veneta Large Lambskin Shoulder Bag is a lovely big blue bag, marvelously executed and fabulously practical.

This roomy, Italian-made shoulder bag is built for comfort. It's made with ultra-light lambskin, which ensures it won't be too heavy even before you fill it, and the knotted shoulder strap is braided with malleable leather, soft against your shoulder and easy on your hand.

The bag is 21½"W X 12½"H X 12"D, lined in pretty grey suede, and has two center compartments, a cell phone pouch and an inside zip pocket. It closes with a magnetic snap at the top. We especially love the signature Intrecciato detail woven down the middle of the bag, and the way it gathers at the bottom. Tote bags have started to get so boring -- and this is just as big, with a lot more character.

The Bottega Veneta Large Lambskin Shoulder Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $2,350.00.

Inside Luxury King Francois Pinault's Private Palazzo Museums

Filed under: Art, Wealth, Architecture & Design

Francois Pinault is a man justifiably envied by many. With a fortune of $8.7 billion the high-school dropout-turned luxury goods titan is the majority shareholder of PPR, whose brands include Gucci, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta. He also owns famed auction house Christie's and the renowned Chateau Latour winery. His amazing contemporary art collection, worth an estimated $1.4 billion, encompasses 2,000-plus works by over 80 artists including Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami and Damien Hirst. Much of it is now housed as his two incredible private museums in Venice, the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana. Both historic buildings were transformed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando and are the subject of a smashing new book from Skira Rizzoli.

Tadao Ando: Venice - The Pinault Collection at the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana shows how Ando's designs seamlessly blend history and innovation while adhering to the strict laws governing the preservation of historic buildings in Venice. At the Palazzo Grassi, prominently located on the Grand Canal, Ando's quiet but expert renovation of the eighteenth-century rooms makes a perfect backdrop for Jeff Koons' eye-popping balloon sculptures. At the Punta della Dogana (shown on the cover above), the Venetian Republic's original customs warehouse, the large-scale space was subtly subdivided into refined rooms for installation art. The "dialogue – that is collision and friction – between the new and the old," Ando states, "is the driving force in creating a city's future."

The surface under the flap is lined in snakeskin and there's an etched metal cutout around the scarab and weave detail on the bottom front flap. Bottega Veneta Snakeskin Three-Flap ClutchWhat a pretty, glowing finish this Snakeskin Three-Flap Clutch Bottega Veneta bag has, thanks to the exotic elaphne watersnake skin that has a slight iridescent finish. The three flaps aren't real (they all open together as one) but there are three separate gusseted compartments inside. Lined in suede it has one interior zip pocket and comes with a detachable leather strap for clutch or shoulder bag use. Bottega Veneta $53,000 Alligator Suitcase

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

Luxe Italian label Bottega Veneta has come out with a new version of its posh exotic leather luggage we first wrote about last summer. This season's take on the classic suitcase, made from the world's finest genuine alligator skin, is hand-crafted in soft-finished matte black and dubbed the Nero. Priced at $53,000, the case features burnished metal hardware with reinforced corners and locking mechanisms, along with matching black alligator handles. It also has a padded lining, internal elastic pocket and a removable garment bag. Designed to improve with age and withstand the rigors of travel, it's still obviously not the kind of thing you check on a commercial flight - unless you happen to own the airline.

Bottega Veneta At Salone Del Mobile in Milan

bottega veneta bag
This year the annual Salone del Mobile is being held from April 14th to 19th at the Rho exhibition center in Milan, Italy. There will be every type of furnishing imaginable on display from classical to modern design with an emphasis placed on high-end quality products. Last year over 300,000 people attended, and while the event is aimed at industry professionals, the show is open to the public on Sunday the 18th of April.

Bottega Veneta has chosen this venue to unveil some of their new design initiatives during the week long show. The Italian company known world wide for exquisite leather goods, particularly their woven bags, has chosen to celebrate Japanese culture and craft with a student design competition and various other collaborations with Japanese artisans. The lucky students from the University of Tokyo whose winning designs are chosen will be able to see them available for purchase in the company's Ginza store after the conclusion of Salone del Mobile. The collaboration seems to be a natural one, as Bottega Veneta has always shown an affinity for supporting the craftsman of luxury items, even opening a school in 2006 to train and support future generations of leather craftsmen. It makes sense that the company would be prone to exploring a relationship with another country's artisans.

Bottega Veneta Leather Fringe Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

Bottega VenetaThe Bottega Veneta Leather Fringe Shoulder Bag is a fresh design with a subtle quirkiness.

We've seen fringe a million ways, and love this woven-together, thatched look in soft Italian leather. Additional allure is added by the contrasting-colored strands (all neutrals) in a haphazard, yet balanced design. The weaving gives the smooth, luxe leather a tactile, grippable appeal. We especially love the woven detail on the 13" drop strap, as the texture feels so satisfying.

This shoulder bag is 11"W X 7"H X 1½"D and lined in matching leather. It exudes relaxed chic style, and can be worn with your jeans or other casual ensembles, like any dress you'd consider pairing with cowboy boots. It is already so popular that customers of Saks Fifth Avenue may only order three per thirty days.

The Bottega Veneta Leather Fringe Shoulder Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,850.00.

Lily Lodge Flowers the Antidote to Boring Red Roses on Valentine's Day

Tired of overpriced not particularly beautiful red roses that often don't even open for Valentine's Day? Maybe your significant other doesn't even like roses? One woman I know married the man who finally figured out her favorite flowers were tulips and showed up with a bouquet of her favorite flowers rather than roses on Valentine's Day. Regardless of the reason, there are options available for those who want to give truly beautiful flowers to that important person in your life.

Ariana Lambert Smeraldo the owner of Lily Lodge, a spectacular flower shop in Los Angeles, California is no stranger to designer style. She was appointed West Coast Director of Stores and Public Relations of Bottega Veneta in 1998. It is not surprising that her store offers so much more than just the run-of-the-mill red roses. Just like many grandmothers have whispered to their granddaughters over the years that the women who choose Bottega know that their own initials are enough, Lily Lodge offers up floral arrangements for those with quiet but exquisite taste. Ariana understands that a combination of beautiful raw materials, a trademark style and understated elegance will always be chic.

Gucci: Synonymous with High Fashion

From the model-patrolled runways of Milan to the chic streets of New York, Gucci is synonymous with high fashion. The Italian designer outfits opulent consumers of all stripes -- financiers, socialites and celebrities -- making it an obvious candidate for a Luxist award in the Best Clothing Designer category, in addition to a nomination for Best in Leathergoods.

Founded in 1921 by Guccio Gucci in Florence, Gucci began as a luggage and leather goods store. Guccio Gucci drew on years of experience working at London's Savoy Hotel and observing the proclivities of English nobles, combining this sensibility with his own Italian fashion sense in his early work, a theme that still runs strong at Gucci today.

Though Gucci struggled to find materials as World War II raged through Europe, the scrappy founder was able to stay afloat by creating products like the "Bamboo Bag" from the resources available. The postwar years brought expansion to Milan and New York, and, sadly, the death of Guccio Gucci. His sons would take over the business and continue to guide it along the path to becoming an international fashion powerhouse, expanding to Hong Kong and Tokyo. The designer became a favorite of fashionable and legendary celebrities such as Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy.

Guccio Gucci's aesthetic persists, a lasting legacy for the founder. The company boasts talented designers like Frida Giannini, who was named sole creative director in 2006. In addition to Gucci, Gucci Group also owns Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Boucheron, Sergio Rossi, Stella McCartney and Yves Saint Laurent. It directly operates 560 stores around the world.
