Dr. Oz Gives Away Luxury Beds To His Audience

dr breus bed
Oprah may have given her audience new VW cars but Dr. Oz gave his audience the gift of a good night's sleep. Dr. Mehmet Oz put a special bed on his "hot list" and announced to a delighted audience that everyone there would be getting a Dr. Breus Signature Bed from Sleepy's. Furniture Today reports that the bed is produced by International Bedding in partnership with The Sleep Doctor, Michael Breus.

The mattress is made with TempSense, a material that adjusts the temperature based on how hot or cool you are as you sleep. Only your side of the bed changes so your partner's side will adjust to his or her own temperature. The bed is designed with a feeling of "zero gravity" to help increase the sense of deep and uninterrupted sleep. It has a patterned gusset and stainless steel corner guards. The beds have a starting list price of $1,149.99 and go up to $3,899.99 at Sleepy's.

The InDecent Bed

Just how much are you into your partner? If you've got £50,000 to spare you can order a custom made 'InDecent Bed' from Gallery of Wonderful. For that price you receive a custom photoshoot in Los Angeles with a top photographer (Sante D'Orazio, Guido Argentina or Warwick Saint). A photo from that shoot of you and your beloved entwined will then be airbrushed and hand-stitched onto the headboard of your new bed in a pixelated mosaic that only reveals itself when seen from a distance. The whole process takes several months.

Should you not have a picture of your own in mind you can buy the limited edition InDecent bed with a sprawled out pin-up in the headboard shown above. The bed is made in oak and finished with a high gloss paint framing the image. The padded headboard features an image taken by Sante D'Orazio. This version is limited to 25 pieces and sells for £9,000.

"The World's Most Expensive Bed" by Parnian

Parnian Most Expensive Bed
Parnian Furniture has just unveiled what it's calling The World's Most Expensive Bed in a showroom in Scottsdale AZ. Designer Abdolhay Parnian apparently did not set out originally to create a piece that was outrageously pricey but instead one that had an impressive "wow" factor in its design. The end result is just as much fine art as it is furniture and took over 2 years to design and 8 months to make by hand. Made of Ebony, Sapele and Curly Maple the main attraction is the sunburst patterned circular headboard created by cutting 78 delicate wooden wedges and placing them so they come to a perfect point in the center. The bed also features gold and stainless steel detailing and is gadget-ready with built-in iPad holders and charging stations, touch-sensitive LED backlighting and nightstand lights, pop-up TV and computer screens that swivel, and even a few hidden compartments for who knows what. Get your own The World's Most Expensive Bed for $38,000-$210,000 depending on what options you choose.

Savoir Beds Tailored Mattresses

savoir beds

At some point you might decide there will be no more simply making do when it comes to your bed – after all, you have your suits tailored, so why not your mattress? The 105-year-old wares made by Savoir Beds are where you should turn. At its inception, Savoir made beds so well that its Number 2 bed earned the moniker "The Savoy," and then in 1937 the actual Savoy Hotel bought the company, holding on to it until 1997.

Having supplied bedding to the world's premium hotels, Savoir knows how to make a bed that can survive the kind of punishment you don't even want to dream of. Everything is done by hand, including the starlashing of the springs in the "sprung base" for "independent vertical adjustment," (remember, these are bed springs we're talking about), and each mattress is made by hand by one person. Materials are, of course, all natural: wool, cotton, horse hair, wood.

There are four options, one of them being round, all of them numerically denoted, and they are crafted for you after the tailors at Savoir have taken your measurements. The company also manufactures a range of frames, valances, and storage options. Take a Savoir home, and the next time you want to 'sleep in your own bed' you'll be able to do it in some of the best hotels in the world.

Prices range from $8,250 to $39,750 for a complete Queen Bed Set and $10,450 to $49,750 for a complete King Bed Set. Each set includes a base, mattress and topper.

Sweet Dream Beds Introduce Your Child to Home Ownership

We aren't quite sure if we should refer to Sweet Dreams beds as beds at all. They are more like single bedroom dwellings... small enough to fit inside a room... that's inside a multi-bedroom dwelling. The Tudor Style Cottage doll house theme bed pictured has two stories, a slide on the far side and, somewhere inside all of that, a bed. We would not be surprised to find a porte-cochère, stables, and staff quarters around back...

A basic bed starts at $5,500, but that will only get you a castle motif decked out in two-tone paint only big enough for a twin bed. That's enough to give any aspiring king or queen nightmares. Throw in another $5,500 and you add room for a queen bed, a staircase with drawers and a slide, and now you're getting somewhere. One parent spent $40,000 on a custom setup, which is probably enough to keep a few other parents up at night.

There are Sweet Dreams beds for boys and girls, and each is individually designed, can be built to match your existing decor, and hand-painted in any way Cinderella – or Peter Pan – might wish. They might not turn your children into actual royalty, or pirates, but they will probably be good for a few weeks of happily counting sheep...

Spaldin's Soy Beds

Spaldin's Soy Beds
If you live in the NYC area, as I do, you are bombarded with radio and TV ads for Sleepy's, "the mattress professionals." Their never-ending self-promotion and "one-day sales" (until the next one, tomorrow) get on my last nerve. So why am I mentioning them? Because when I walked past a Sleepy's store last week I saw an ad in the window for the Spaldin Soy Bed. A soy bed? Really? I was intrigued.

Turns out that Spaldin, a Spanish company, makes its soy mattresses in four types: Aircell-Soy, Biocell-Soy, Sensitex-Soy, and Memory-Soy. All are made from biodegradable materials that are cultivated without pesticides and processed without harmful chemicals. Read more here.

Quality rest and environmental peace of mind are not inexpensive, however. While prices are not listed on the Spaldin site, this page at, ahem, Sleepy's, gives an idea of the price range of Spaldin beds. Original prices run from $1,400 - $5,000. As of this writing, Sleepy's has all four models on sale. Alas, green costs now but saves the planet for later.

Be & D Woodstock Hobo, Handbag of the Day

I love the color on this Woodstock Hobo by Be & D more than I've loved a handbag color in a long time -- it's so soothing! And it has an interesting 'cozy but chilled' vibe going on. Not crazy about the stiff-looking handle but I can see how it works with the overall shape and style of the bag. It's simple textured leather with a large exterior fold-over flap pocket, pretty silver studs on a decorative leather strap, and a beige suede lining. Magnetic snap closure, interior pockets x 3, $995.

Frette's Holiday 2008 Offerings

Frette's holiday collection is always something special. In 2006, we had Sophia, a line inspired by ancient brocades and damasks used by royal dynasties across Europe. In 2007, we experienced Helena, a golden set inspired by Helen of Troy. This year the inspiration was 17th Century Swedish Queen Christina and her stirring portrayal by Greta Garbo in the 1933 film. The dramatic collection rendered in rich reds with a tapestry look consists of just 64 numbered sets in an ebony box containing a duvet, two Euro shams and two pillows. The retail price is $6,000.

The rest of the holiday collection includes mink slippers, a mink throw, wool blankets, cashmere scarves and a few selected high-end pieces of loungewear. The collection will be on display in Frette windows in November but you can catch a sneak peek in the gallery below.

Pampered Pooch Bumper Bed

Here's a bumper bed for your special family member that you can feel good about, ecologically-speaking. Covered in organic cotton twill, free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers, it's filled with a comfy, cozy stuffing and is made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, which diverts more than 25 tons of plastic bottles from landfills every year. The bed features a center, removable pillow that can also be used separately inside crates or the car. It's a great option for allergic, sensitive, or orthopedic pets. Made in the U.S.A., machine washable. A portion of sale proceeds are donated. Sizes S - XL; $76.95 - $178.95.

The Private Cloud

This looks like such an awesome bed! I absolutely love rocking chairs because they're so relaxing, and this Private Cloud bed looks like it would have much the same vibe. Besides the obvious "floating on a cloud" feeling you must get when in the bed, its open and expansive design conveys airy floating elements of the clouds when looking at the bed also. It's sure to make almost any room feel bigger and more open.

I do wonder, though, how easily it rocks. It might be nice to feel a little sway here and there as you reposition during the night, but if you're married do you have to be careful how you get up in the morning? You know, so you don't set it off rocking like crazy and make your poor spouse seasick?

How Did You Sleep? Ask the Bed

Why is a bed being shown at the 2008 CES? Because the Starry Night Bed from Leggett & Platt contains a lot of technology. The bed has a vibration sensor and load cell technologies that measure how much you toss and turn, and how often you get out of bed at night. it also detects snoring and then slightly raises the snorer to help eliminate the problem. When the snoring stops, the bed goes back down. The bed can also be set to preheat or precool either both or one side of the bed. The bed's comprehensive calculations can be read on a bedside monitor that shows last night's sleep data and can compare it to previous nights.

The bed has a surround sound system with four eight-inch subwoofers and a headboard project that casts a 10-foot screen on the wall. it also has wireless internet connectivity and a wireless keyboard. The internet display can be projected via the screen. It has 1.5 terabytes of disc storage for almost 400,000 songs or up to 2,000 hours of video. The bed will be available in the first half of 2009 and is expected to sell for $20,000 to $50,000 depending on the features ordered.
