Auction Napa Valley Sees Strong Results

Following a trend we saw with the Naples auction earlier this year, Auction Napa Valley was also back up, bringing in a total of $8.51 million. Last year's recession-dimmed sale brought in $5.7 million, a huge dip after 2008's $10.4 million haul. This was the annual event's 30th year and marked a return to the original format of a daytime auction rather than a more formal evening affair.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that one of the hottest items up for bid was a lot of eight magnums of wine plus a private dinner and cellar consultation from Ann Colgin and her husband, Joe Wender, of Colgin Cellars that sold for $250,000. Egged on by the auctioneers, Fritz Hatton and David Reynolds the two vintners quadrupled the lot selling all four slots for a $1 million total. The Fund a Need campaign raised more than $1 million for children's health and wellness programs in Napa County with donations small and large from many of the event's participants.

Walk-On Role In Modern Family Up For Bid At Auction Napa Valley

We mentioned this year's Auction Napa Valley event last week but didn't cover one usual feature of the event, the Hollywood connection. In addition to celebrity attendees, the auction usually has a stellar lot or two offering a chance to get the celebrity VIP treatment in Los Angeles. This year's lot comes from former Disney executive Rich Frank and Connie Frank, owners of Frank Family Vineyards, and Steve McPherson, co-owner of Promise and President of ABC Entertainment. The Modern Family Affair lot includes a walk-on role on ABC's "Modern Family," dinner at Mélisse with smoking hot actress Sofia Vergara and lodging at the Beverly Wilshire. After your star turn you jet off first class on American Airlines to Cabo San Lucas, and a enjoy a luxurious stay at the Esperanza Resort. Enjoy drinkable souvenirs in the form of a five-year vertical of etched 1.5L bottles of Frank Family's Winston Hill (2002 - 2006), and 12 bottles of 2005 Promise Cabernet Sauvignon.

The lot is one of about forty live lots offered at the auction which will be held on June 5 and proceeds benefit local charities in Napa Valley. Eric Stonestreet, who plays the role of Cameron on "Modern Family," will be on hand at the auction to encourage attendees to bid on the lot.

Auction Napa Valley celebrates its 30th anniversary June 3-6. Hosted by the Napa Valley Vintners, a non-profit trade organization representing nearly 400 Napa Valley wineries, this four-day gala is not only the world's most successful charity wine auction, it is also the most fun. Beginning with casual, intimate dinners with host vintners in their homes and wineries Thursday night, it ends Sunday with a "Farewell Fête." Friday is a day to meander through a food and wine festival at the Rubicon Estate where more than 100 wineries will be pouring wines. Local restaurateurs and artisan food producers will showcase their specialties. You will also have a chance to taste and bid on wines from the barrel in the rousing Barrel Auction inside the winery's caves.

Recession Bites The Auction Napa Valley

The Santa Rosa Democrat reports from the Auction Napa Valley wine auction this weekend and reveals that the news isn't good. As expected the recession took a chunk out of the charity giving for this annual event. The big live auction event on Saturday night only brought in $4.3 million, less than half of the $10.4 million raised last year, a result that is similar to the Naples auction earlier this year. During the four-day event, Napa Valley Vintners raised $5.7 million for a variety of local charities.

The Santa Rosa Democrat article quotes several bidders who said that they were bidding more conservatively because they had either lost money in the past year or had serious concerns about their ongoing financial health. Bids were also lower because competition was less intense and some may have been concerned about appearing too showy. All of the Auction Napa Valley events were sold out, indicating that people still have interest in this event. Even though they did't spend like they did last year and it sounds like a good time was still had by all.

The Napa Valley Vintners pledged back in 2007 that for the next five years the the auction would distribute a minimum of $5 million a year to the charities including Community Health Clinic Ole, Boys & Girls Clubs and Napa Valley Community Housing.

Auction Napa Valley Goes On Without Celebrity Host

This year's Auction Napa Valley takes place this weekend and some are wondering what effect the recession will have on the lavish affair. After all, this year's Naples Winter Wine Auction in Naples, Florida over the winter brought in just over $5 million compared around $14 million last year. The 29th annual Auction Napa Valley takes place on the lawn at the beautiful Meadowood Napa Valley and features the usual assortment of fine barrel lots, travel adventures and winemaker dinners but one thing missing will be the celebrity auctioneer. Last year Jay Leno did the duty as host and past emcees included Ryan Seacrest and Dana Carvey. Instead, the Santa Rosa Democrat reports that the event will be "loosely emceed" by wine educator Kevin Zraly.

Auction Napa Valley benefits local health, children's and housing organizations, including Community Health Clinic Ole, Boys & Girls Clubs and Napa Valley Community Housing. Last year it brought in $10.4 million but likely won't hit a number quite that high this year as most people have cut back on both their philanthropy and their pleasure spending.

The economic news may be dismal but Auction Napa Valley still managed to do quite well, coming in 5% over last year and raising $10.35 million for local charities. The weekend event in Napa Valley, California drew guests from around the world to bid on barrel futures, one-of-a-kind wines, winery vertical collections and rare bottlings of Napa Valley wines that were often partnered with vintner-hosted events, luxury items and travel. Jay Leno served as the host of the Live Auction and guests included Congressman Mike Thompson and first time attendee, Oprah Winfrey. Check out some of the fun in the gallery below.
