Ardmore Releases Exceptional 25-Year Old Single-Malt

Scottish Highland distillery Ardmore has been coming on strong the last few years with a terrific non-age-stated single-malt whisky it markets as Ardmore Traditional Cask. Now, it has complimented its portfolio with a cask strength 25-year old.

Ardmore has long been the principal single-malt contributor to Teacher's blended whisky. But a few years ago, seizing the popularity of single-malts, it started distributing its own expression. Previously it also released a highly regarded 30-year old, priced about $450.

Ardmore is a unique player in Scotland in that it is the only Highland distillery still using peat in its malting. Rather than coming through strong like an Islay malt, though, Ardmore's peatiness is more leathery than smoky. It is an utterly unique flavor among Scotch whiskies.

The 25-year old carries through the Ardmore signature but the spiciness and citrus that aren't s much in evidence in Traditional are incredibly well done in this older expression. And then there is the streak of smoke and leather jetting through. A first-class job.

Look for Ardmore 25-year old in duty-free and some of the better whisky shops in major cities. Price: About $195.

Laphroaig 25 and Ardmore 30 Single Malts Arrive Stateside

Beam Global Spirits & Wine is offering whisky aficionados and investors two new limited-edition single malt bottlings for their spirits portfolios – Laphroaig 25 Year Old and Ardmore 30 Year Old. The Laphroaig (above, right) reveals the remarkable result of 25 years of aging in the finest Oloroso Sherry and American Oak casks. The whisky is a rare combination of bold peat flavor spiced with sweet sherry notes and rich oaky undertones. Creamy, smooth, full of character and complexity, it's bottled at cask strength and priced at $499.99 per bottle.

The Ardmore 30 (above, left) is crafted at the only Highland distillery that has consistently peated its barley since its inception. The whisky "weaves bold smoky flavor notes historically associated only with Islay malts into the rich Highland malt experience." Aged in former bourbon barrels and handmade quarter casks, it reveals a distinctive finish and rich, complex flavor. Only 1,428 bottles of the rare and exclusive Scotch, each individually numbered, are available at a suggested retail price of $449.99 as well.

Not your every day blended whisky from Compass Box

After visiting dozens of distilleries and refining his taste, John Glaser sat down in his home and began mixing whisky. Before he knew it, he decided to begin marketing his blends by buying special casks from Scottish distilleries and selling them under the brand name of Compass Box Crafted Whiskies. Picking some of the best aged grains, he has created whisky with outstanding profiles. The Compass Box line includes blended Scotch in addition to various vatted malts. There are also limited edition whiskies such as Orangerie, the once a year orange and spice-infused whisky we mentioned back when it was available in December. Try The Peat Monster. It is a vatted malt made with Caol Ila and Ardmore malts, 92 proof at $45.
