The $60 Million iPad-Controlled Gulfstream G550 Private Jet

Filed under: Gadgets, Wings, Architecture & Design

Spain-based industrial designer Stefan Radev has given the $60 million Gulfstream G550 private jet a makeover, including cool iPad controls à la P. Diddy's Solemates superyacht. From the exterior livery to the seating arrangements, Radev's design scheme is simple, elegant and ergonomic. It's also full of eco-friendly touches like bamboo woodwork.

Natural light is emphasized in the airy interior design with oversized oval-shaped windows and neutral tones complementing the bamboo in an open-plan layout equally suited to working or lounging. iPads and iPods also control the various climate and entertainment functions for the passengers. It's just a concept at this point, but easily made real with enough money.

Filed under: Gadgets, Celebrity Shopping, Men's Style

Back in August we reported that famed Italian luxury goods firm Tod's was offering the world's most expensive iPad case in genuine alligator for $4,900. Now David August, the California-based boutique luxury brand that creates bespoke wardrobes for the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and various billionaires, has topped that with his new collection of exotic leather goods including an even pricier iPad sheath. Crafted of the world's finest alligator skin hand cut and stitched in Italy by a skilled family of artisans, the collection of five luxe pieces is available in both a glazed and matte finish in over 20 different colors.

The entire collection is priced at $37,800 with each piece also available individually. The five pieces include the iPad cover (above, center) for $6,900, a soft laptop attaché case for $12,900, a Dopp kit for $7,800, a watch holder for $7,800, and a change tray for $2,400. All items are made strictly to order with a 2–4 week delivery time and several personal customizing options are available as well. While far from the priciest item in the collection, the iPad case is nonetheless the world's most expensive cover for the trendy gadget, costing nearly 14 times as much as Apple's basic 16GB model itself.

Rare Early Apple-1 Up For Auction

Long before the iPod, the iPad and the iPhone, Apple was just a few circuit boards and a dream. In July 1976, the Apple-1 went on sale priced at $666.66-- no sexy design, no white minimalist style, just pure geekery in a simple cardboard box. On November 23 Christie's London is auctioning off an early Apple-1 and all its original packaging in a lot estimated to fetch as much as £150,000. Part of the reason for the high price is that just a few examples of the computer survive today.

The one being sold at Christie's includes an Apple-1 motherboard, number 82, printed label to reverse, with a few slightly later additions including a 6502 microprocessor, labeled R6502P R6502-11 8145, printed circuit board with 4 rows A-D and columns 1-18, three capacitors, heatsink, cassette board connector, 8K bytes of RAM, keyboard interface, firmware in PROMS, low-profile sockets on all integrated circuits, video terminal, breadboard area with slightly later connector, with later soldering, wires and electrical tape to reverse, printed to obverse Apple Computer 1 Palo Alto. Ca. The 8K memory is just a tiny fraction of what even the smallest iPod is capable of; it could not even hold one song. There were just 200 of these made and the computer did not come with a monitor or keyboard. It did however have a typed and signed letter from Steve Jobs. Depending on how well this one sells you could find a lot of people digging into their attics and garages looking for old computers.

Hublot iPhone App Review

The promise of easy distribution to masses of (potential) luxury buyers via the iPhone App Store has made it an attractive venue for many luxury watch makers as a means of educating those interested in their watches. While iPhone application quality has been all over the board, the better ones give users a reason to keep the apps after initially downloading them. At the least, the apps should offer people a close-up and personal views of the timepieces they are interested in possibly buying.

Hublot
has recently released their own iPhone app. Not exactly late in the game, Hublot seems to have wanted to take some time to develop they app and imbue it with a lot of functionality (as well as the core Hublot brand themes). Hands down, my favorite aspect of the application is a sort of augmented reality feature that lets you preview how their watches will look on your wrist. Starting with an impressive selection of their timepieces to choose from, you take a picture of your wrist along an outline of an arm, and then place the watch on your wrist. It gives you an amazingly real perspective of what a watch would look like if you wore it, and the system is simple and easy.

Other good features in the app are technical information for many of the brand's watches, as well as 360 degree displays of several Hublot timepieces that were taken on a special camera in-house at Hublot. Hublot further has developed a game that is based on the fact that mechanical watches need to be wound, and a "testing" mode where you can use the functions of a few Hublot watches, that also show the correct time as taken from your iPhone's internal clock.

Brabus Adds Power and iPads to the S-Class to make the Brabus iBusiness

Filed under: Gadgets, Luxury Cars & Autos

Mercedes already loads its S-Class with copious amenities. Drive that bad boy over to Brabus, though, and they'll be glad to add things you didn't have the imagination to consider. The German tuner's latest creation is the Brabus iBusiness, which is an S-Class stuffed with a giant engine up front and a giant load of tech in back.

The rear seats have essentially become plush, open-plan workspaces fitted with all things Apple: two iPads with keyboards, a 64GB iPod Touch, and a Mac Mini in the trunk displayed on a Mac monitor in the Alcantara headliner and controlled via a Magic Mouse. And that's in addition to the monitors mounted into the backs of the headrests. The system is hooked into the car so that the S-Class systems can be ordered about directly from your seatback desk.

Pulling that office along is a 6.3-liter V12 with 750 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of usable torque. What's the bottom line on that? About 3.8 seconds from zero-to-sixty and a top speed of 211 mph. We recommend you type or go for top speed runs because the brunt of 750 horsepower is not good for your words-per-minute. The price? Brabus didn't say, but figure a little less than it would cost to buy Finland. A little.

Now famed Italian luxury goods firm Tod's is offering world's most expensive iPad case, which in this case is actually in excellent taste. The luxurious case, finished in genuine alligator, is priced at $4,900 - almost ten times the cost of Apple's un-embellished 16GB iPad itself. Fancy a Saab 9-5? Then Get to Know it with Saab's iPhone App

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

Saab wants you to like its new 9-5. Based on the reviews the brand-new-and-free-of-GM sedan is getting, that shouldn't be such a hard thing to do. But until you're actually in the showroom singing on the dotted, Saab believes a little persuasion in its favor wouldn't hurt things, and portable persuasion would hurt things even less. That's how we get the Saab 9-5 app for iPods and iPads and iPhones.

As per usual, you can watch videos, admire the plentiful photos Saab has taken of the car, or dress one up yourself and spin it around just like you do with your significant other at Saks. When it goes on sale it will start around $38,000 and climb all the way up to nearly $50,000 for a loaded Aero model. So if you want to save time at the dealership figuring out how much quirkiness you really want to buy, the iTunes app store is where you should be headed.

Louis Vuitton is coming out with the ultimate luxurious accessory for Apple's much-loved new iPad – cases covered in the famed French fashion house's signature canvas. The sleek, simple sleeve-style sheath will be available in both Vuitton's classic monogram pattern and the more modern Damier Graphite checkerboard. Priced at about $365 apiece and set to be available in 2011, the cases are only a little less expensive than the iPad itself, but certainly lend it a sizable dose of style. And they're still cheaper then the handstitched leather versions my colleague Rigel Celeste wrote about last month. As British GQ notes, the Vuitton cases lend the device the "feel of a lightweight, ultra-portable attaché case - appropriate given that it is superseding your offline files and folders, [and] also gives your iPad some much-needed protection."
