Leigh Keno with the Winslow Homer painting he will sell at auction in New York on January 18, 2011
On Tuesday, January 18, 2011, Keno Auctions will hold its American and European Paintings, Folk Art, Furniture, and Decorative Arts auction. The auction will feature such important items as a Winslow Homer watercolor, an extremely rare Andrew Wyeth sketchbook, early American antique furniture, and important Folk Art. (see gallery below). Winslow Homer's watercolor is seen above with Keno Auctions' president, Leigh Keno, who is one of the foremost experts in the world of art and decorative arts as well as a regular contributor, along with his twin brother, Leslie, to the popular PBS television program Antiques Roadshow.

"We are very excited about the sale," Leigh Keno told Luxist. "It's a mixture of American, English and British furniture and paintings. There are some Chinese and other Asian things too. There is real variety---even a Minoan bronze bowl that dates back to 1200 to 1600 BC that was found in Crete. The great thing about the auction is that we have the Internet---including Live Auctioneers and ArtFact---as well as our own telephone bidding system, which makes it possible for anyone around the world to bid."

Keno has devoted much of his time of late amassing the large collection of important items that are featured in this auction. Important furniture items include a William and Mary veneered high chest of drawers (estimate: $60,000 to $120,000). "This is the most important example of American cabinetmaking in the baroque style in early 18th century Boston," says Keno. "There are only two others with veneered walnut moldings. But this high chest has the distinction of not only having the veneer on the sides, but also having the original surface on the legs and feet. The fact that the base is completely original is of great importance."

Art Auction Raises Money For Maine Museum

From now through November 29th, Adelson Galleries in New York City is hosting an online auction of museum quality art works in support of the Farnsworth Art Museum's campaign for the Andrew Wyeth Memorial Endowment. The works to be sold have been donated by artists, collectors, and philanthropists dedicated to sustaining the mission of the Farnsworth. The campaign hopes to raise a total of $12 million to fund the maintenance and operation of four of the Maine museum's properties: the Olson House in Cushing, Maine, and the Wyeth Center, Wyeth Study Center, and Wyeth Research Center in Rockland. The Wyeth center focuses on the work of Andrew Wyeth, as well as that of his father, N.C., and son Jamie.

The live auction preview to be held in the gallery culminates in an event celebrating the life and artistic legacy of Andrew Wyeth on November 29th. The auction includes Jamie Wyeth's 1969 portrait of his father, Andrew Wyeth; Andy Warhol's 1977 self-portrait, Self Portrait with Skull; an Andrew Wyeth 1984 watercolor, Helga, From the Back; a Leon Kroll oil painting; a John Marin watercolor; and other important works by American artists.

Biden Residence To Feature Wyeth Paintings

I was reading this article on Andrew Wyeth paintings to be showcased in the Biden Vice Presidential residence when I learned that Andrew Wyeth died at the age of 91. Wyeth's quietly emotive paintings of country life depict a particularly American viewpoint.

According to Delaware Onlin
e, Wyeth's watercolor "Cal Wallace in Friendship Sloop," will hang in Number One Observatory Circle in Washington, the official vice president's residence. Art collector Charles Cawley is loaning the work and may loan others from his extensive collection. The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania which also has collections of both Andrew Wyeth and NC Wyeth works has agreed to loan two paintings for a year starting with "Spring -- 1918," an oil on canvas painted by Andrew Wyeth's father, N.C. Wyeth. Andrew's son, Jamie Wyeth, is also loaning a piece which would mean that the three generations of Wyeth painters will grace the vice president's home. $10

The Andrew Wyeth painting shown above "Ericksons" fetched $10.344 million at Christie's in 2007.
