Porsche Sells Out Entire Run of 911 GT2 RS

Filed under: Luxury Cars & Autos

How do you sell a $245,000 supercar? Easy. Make only 500 of them.

That's what Porsche's done with its latest top-of-the-line 911 GT2 RS. The 620-horsepower lightweight sportscar runs up to 62 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds and tops out at 202, making it one of the most extreme street-legal machines ever built by the German automaker. And mere months after it was announced, all 500 examples have been spoken for. Now that's fast.

Looking for the new top-of-the-line from Stuttgart? Look no further, because this is it. The new Porsche 911 GT2 RS, leaked just days ago from its dealer preview, has now been officially released.

Stripped down to 3,020 pounds and boosted to 620 horsepower, the GT2 RS is a veritable rocket sled. Its 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat six has been boosted by 90 horses, encumbered by 154 fewer pounds than the GT2 on which it is based. Unlike the 911 Turbo S – Porsche's other top-of-the-line supercar – the GT2 RS drives all that power through the rear wheels exclusively. The result, if you've got the driving talent, is a 0-60 spring in 3.4 seconds, a 205 mph top speed and a devastating Nurburgring lap time of 7:18. Carbon fiber aero bits and an Alcantara micro-suede interior round out the package. Only 500 examples will be made, however, selling for $245,000 apiece.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS Leaks Out of Dealer Preview

Porsche 911? Fast. Porsche 911 GT3? Faster. 911 GT3 RS? Even faster. 911 GT2? Well, you're getting the point. So what do you suppose would happen if Porsche were to produce a 911 GT2 RS? Well, we're about to find out.

The new king of the hill from Stuttgart was just previewed to a group of dealers a couple of days ago, one of which managed to sneak out this sole shot, likely taken on a camera phone. It's expected to top the existing GT2's 560 horsepower with 620, all driven through the rear wheels (unlike the all-wheel-drive 911 Turbo on which it's based) and unburdened by 200 pounds of removed excess weight. A 240,000-euro price tag is expected to come along with it, but so is a 3.2-second 0-62 time. Watch this space tuned for more, as the car is expected to debut this coming September.

Wimmer RS GT2: For When an "Ordinary" Porsche 911 GT2 Isn't Fast Enough

Some people don't know when to leave well enough alone. We like those people. Like the engineers over at German tuning firm Wimmer Racing Technology, who have taken Porsche's top-of-the-line 911 GT2 and taken it to an even further extreme.

By tinkering with the electronics and replacing the twin turbochargers, camshafts, cylinder heads and exhaust system, Wimmer has brought the overall output up to a stratospheric 680 horsepower and 642 lb-ft of torque. With all that power in the back, the Wimmer RS GT2 can accelerate to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 221 miles per hour...plenty of grunt, in other words, to keep almost everything on the Autobahn in its rear-view mirror. Along with the carbon-fiber body kit, re-tuned suspension and 21" wheels, the modifications add an extra $40,000 to the "stock" GT2's $191,700 list price, for an on-the-street cost of over $230k.
