1930s Bespoke Gentleman's Spirits Case from Goyard
An elegant 1930s bespoke gentleman's spirits case from Goyard, the luxurious Parisian luggage maker founded in 1853, is being offered for sale by New York's Mantiques Modern for $2,800. Custom made for a connoisseur who wanted to be sure of always having his favorite tipple ready to hand while gallivanting around the globe, the handmade monogrammed case is crafted of fine pigskin with brass hardware. Inside it features two sizable silver plated flasks and a set of four silver tumblers in fitted compartments. When fastened it resembles a briefcase. Goyard has long had a devoted clientele of celebrities and royalty. Aristocrats such as the Grand Duke of Russia, the Maharajah of Kapurthala and the Duke of Windsor all traveled with Goyard luggage.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute To 1931 Watch

It was only a matter of time before Jaeger-LeCoultre did a "heritage" version of their already "in the past" Reverso watch. A timeless classic, the Reverso has come in dozens of versions, becoming one of the brand's most signature timepieces. As the name of this new "Tribute" watch suggests, the original Reverso watch was released in 1931. The idea behind it was to be a timepiece that could be worn while playing polo - but that would also be less susceptible to damage given that watch crystals were made of glass back then.

The design gave the rectangular case the ability to flip over while wearing the watch. When turned over, the original Reverso had an all metal surface where the watch face would be. This space was also popular for custom engravings and personalized messages. At least one professional polo player told me that you would not want to wear a watch during a serious polo match. I think that is obvious to most people, but the Reverso really hasn't been about that in decades.

A Shanghai Art Deco Landmark Reopens

Filed under: Luxury Travel & Hotels

When I visited Shanghai last year, its most famous Art Deco landmark, the Peace Hotel on the Bund, was covered in shrouds for renovation. It had been that way since 2007, but now the covers are off as the hotel has just reopened as the Fairmont Peace Hotel, .

The hotel originally opened in 1929, in one of Shanghai's heydays. The hotel was the first high-rise in the city, and had the city's first electric elevator. The art-deco style cage elevator was one of many details that made the hotel special; and it was known as the place to stay in Shanghai prior to the Communist revolution. The renovation apparently retained many of the key features of the hotel -- the Jazz Bar, the Peace Hall, with its wooden dance floor; as well as many touches from the 1930s, but it's also got the full complement of modern amenities in-room, from Blu-Ray DVD players to Illy Espresso machines.

At right is the truly unique 1930's Dashtronic Limited Edition Watch from Stauer. The watch is crafted in the 1930's "jumping mechanism" style, which, rather than incorporating hands, utilizes a window reminiscent of a dashboard or radio tuner to tell the time.

The watch features 3-ATM water resistance, 21-jewel automatic movement, stainless steel casing, and a black alligator embossed leather band.

This compelling watch is a very small splurge at just $99. If the 1930s isn't an era you'd care to think about right now, check out some of the other watches at Stauer -- our favorites, including a skeleton pocket watch for a steal are below:
