Square Enix reassessing Final Fantasy XIV server merges {Massively}

Feb 13th 2012 6:43PM There are way too many GOOD mmo's out there to bother giving the goof-up's a second try when they scramble to fix their mistakes. I'll be honest. If something fails at the starting gate (or even Beta) I rarely ever go back to give it another shot. There would have to be absolutely nothing new in the MMO market in order for me to contemplate giving a bad MMO another fair shot at my money, after they realized they "dun goofed". There are plenty of good mainstream MMO's and small good Indie MMO companies struggling to stay afloat out there that I feel are more deserving of a subscription, and thats where my money and time goes. I support good games with a subscription. I refuse bad games by giving them nothing. Allods failed with their cash shop greediness at the starting gate. Warhammer failed with terrible physics, class mechanics, glitches galore, and a game that wasn't really in touch with what its fans had hoped for (IMO). And well, we all know the story with FFXIV... and I won't be going back unless I hear some reports of it being the next best thing since sliced bread. Which... i doubt will happen.

That's because he'd rather be in Rift on V-day, doing the record marriage thing and being a part of history.
He's like: "Effin girls, I could be accomplishing something."

Trion releases RIFT wedding trailer {Massively}

Feb 8th 2012 1:16PM If you've been gone from the game a long time (like me), do the trial account. Its free for 1-20 levels of play just to pass some time for nostalgia. I used to be on the Guardian side back-in-the-day and just loaded the whole thing up for something to do because I was bored. Just for shizzles and giggles I did the Defiant side starter quests and...I was having...FUN! I was amazed at how much I really did miss this game after disappearing so long ago (mostly due to burn-out from a demanding guild).

Rift might not hold my attention for a long time, but it will do the trick at least until Secret World and Guildwars 2 come out.
I really didn't realize how much I missed it until I came back on a whim. Do the trial account... just dip your toes in the water and see how it feels.

Letting same sex characters marry in a game just makes sense all round for all types. I'm a female IRL, and my boyfriend likes to play female characters. We're not gay IRL, but our characters like each other obviously.
Restrictions on the pursuit of happiness are just BS for all walks of life, virtual included.

However... since I play Defiant currently (already did Guardian for a good many months. Loved it too).. part of me wants to say that the Defiant side should allow it, while the Guardians refuse and act like the religious zealot nut-jobs they are. ;P

CNN observes the migration habits of the elusive wild gamer {Massively}

Feb 5th 2012 11:40PM I'm one of those MMO gamers that loves a game most when its "fresh out of the oven". I often tire before the 4-5 month mark on most games. Usually around the time the first big waves of nerfs hit.
I love new mmos for many reasons... but I love them mainly because:
The massive super elitist clique guilds haven't formed yet.
Nobody "knows" classes to an annoying (dictator-y) level yet. The guides and websites that reveal all the answers for the lazy people are only JUST forming and most of the game requires real hands-on-do-the-work-yourself action.
Everyone is learning it all for the first time. Mistakes are expected. Poor gear is par for the course. There are no MIN/MAX'ers yet... so many class play styles are being explored. The world feels open and free without set rules for the leetz yet. The environment is being explored by everyone for the first time and the world feels populated. Everyone is still stumbling around in the dark and having a blast. The easter eggs are still mostly hidden, the puzzles must be solved by you, there are no guides to help you. Give the game a few months and some guide site will have a write up on every-single-one... but not now, not yet. The game is still fresh and anything you discover, is being discovered by YOU. Your own skill, wit, and curiosity is rewarding you, not some write up done by someone else on some fan site.
Players using mechanics in "unexpected" ways, are not going to be punished yet for thinking outside the box. Nobody is nerfed yet. Explorers are the economy pioneers, forging the way and selling everything they find extra's of and making bank.
For several short months, a player can really shine by being skilled, and using their brain. Then... you hit level cap and it starts to go downhill as the sheep and their massive guilds and friends catch up carrying each other like the good ol' boy club...using all the website guides out there to advance themselves without effort. There's nothing left but dungeon grinding and raids...with those people that took forever to get where you have been sitting...waiting. So skilled. *sigh* -_-
I LOVE games at the starting gate...no end game gear-grind yet. A person can actually shine as an individual for a time.
New MMO's with rich storytelling and deep mysteries to uncover are my favorite. Ones that give me a real world feel for a time... and adventures at every turn. I try to savor the experience as much as possible, but sadly the end comes all too soon. ADD? Hardly... and infact, its the opposite if anything.
I leave because the THINKING has ended.

The Daily Grind: Are you currently on hiatus from MMOs? {Massively}

Feb 3rd 2012 2:07PM For me it was a bit of frustration that MMO after MMO after MMO refused to give small groups (Solo. duo, trio players) any love or a real competitive end game (outside of PvP). It had to be guilds or gtfo. It had to be 5-6 group parties or gtfo.

I played that style through FFXI. I played it through WoW, founding 1 top raiding guild, and participating in 5 top raiding guilds since 2004, I was in a large guild in EQ2. I was in a top PvP oriented guild on a Rift PvP server. I did it in LOTRO, I did it in Fallen Earth, Guildwars, and countless other short lived MMO adventures... I am so...tired... of this forced play-style in MMOs. Its getting old. I didn't mind it so much the 3'rd or 4'th time around...but honestly at this point its getting old. I have known SO many people over the years that I really didn't need to know, but had no choice. I've had more than my fair share of annoying clueless players, Drama Mammas, lootwhores, and dictators.

I AM TIRED OF DOING THAT CRAP.

Also, when all your efforts are wiped with a new X-pac, its a tad soul crushing. I hate that MMO developers flick away all that hard work as if they never happened, just so their new subscribers don't feel overwhelmed on catching up. Boo hoo wouldn't want little Johnny to feel intimidated. Gee that would be terrible.
When games do it non-stop after a while you just throw you hands up and wonder Whats the point? Achievement credits are not enough.

MechWarrior Online delves into the art of role warfare {Massively}

Feb 1st 2012 4:54PM The last time I enjoyed a Mech-type RPG game was back on the c-64 with "Crescent hawk's inception"...that was a long long time ago.

The Daily Grind: What's your preferred night to raid? {Massively}

Jan 28th 2012 12:41PM @Cyroselle
The way I see it, it would be more social. When people know they can't be elitist and leave others out, they'll give them more time of day in order to get objectives done. I know of way too many guilds that were always "Guildies only". Thus narrowing the social playing field greatly.

Betawatch: January 21 - 27, 2012 {Massively}

Jan 28th 2012 12:38PM I've been needing a new "big box title" MMO fix for TOO LONG now... ( SWTOR does not interest me .) That leaves me just sitting and waiting on Secret World and Guild Wars 2. Right now, Skyrim is the only thing keeping me sane but I am needing a shared-world environment and economy for motivation. I can't stand the "anime" cheapo mmo's that are constantly being churned out in Asia... and FPS are not for me.
Hurry up, somebody... before I decide to go be a productive member of society!

The Daily Grind: What's your preferred night to raid? {Massively}

Jan 27th 2012 1:24PM
Wanted To Play: A MMO that has ZERO organized raids. ZERO large guilds. Zero grouping. (ie if you want to help. You do and get credit for contribution. People can't stop you, and the game is intelligently designed to where that is not a problem) and all dungeons are public. IE like a virtual "world" should be. Non- privatized.
I am tired of clique groups in a game genre that is supposed to be social. Some games are so terrible at this (EQ2...looking at u) that you never see anyone in the game, because they're all off hiding in their guild halls.
I want a game that I can be a lone-wolf in, when I want to do my own thing (without being penalized for being solo) . If someone wanders along and helps me, fine. If I see a group doing something, I can just jump right in and help them. Fine. If a rare world boss spawns, it lives long enough for lots of people to hear about it and go help bring it down. FINE. Nobody left out unless they want to be.
Lets get rid of the special elitist clubs for ONCE in a MMO.
