This so-clled "progressive" "earthy crunchy" food chain has become too corporatist for its own good. At a time when AIG, Wall Street, and bankers are robbing us blind and getting away with it to the tune of trillions, we live in a Dickensian America where people like the man in this story are punished because they seek to eat.
This story changes my opinion of Whole Foods for the worse, to be sure.

Mar 1st 2009 2:44PM Pedestrian malls long ago proved to be failures for the downtowns that tried them out.Not only are they disruptive to traffic patterns, but they also confuse pedestrians and draw away footsteps from businesses that are by nature geared toward customers strolling by on sidewalks. i wonder where Bloomberg is getting this bad advice from and it does not show much understanding on his part of city planning. Times Square without its famously frenetic variety of traffic will quickly become yet another vapid space in a New York which has become full of these. Yet another misguided attempt to make New York safe for Midwestern tourists, I'm afraid, who would do better to simply stay at home if New York scares them.
One of the more famous, textbook, failed attempts at pedestrian malls is that of Ithaca, NY.
A rare, semi-success can be seen at Burlington, Vermont's, Church Street Marektplace.
