Vagabond Tales: Please check your durian at the door {Gadling}

Jan 3rd 2012 12:10PM I've tried Durian several times. Makes me gag. Reminds me of gasoline infused dirty gym socks strained through a murky swimming pool. A pity since most of the rest of hubby's family loves it.

United Airlines to order A380 jumbo jet? {Gadling}

Dec 3rd 2011 12:58PM While it would be nice to see the fleet upgrade (their equipment is a little tired), it is slightly troubling to see this trend to the larger aircraft.

It's likely that the number of flights will be cut down, as well as the locations from which they depart. This means taking (more) feeder flights at each end.

Also, the level of service while on par with say Chinese carrier EVA at best, is nowhere approaching that of Cathay or Singapore Airlines. So they are stuck pricing themselves under the premium market, which may not provide the increased profits they hope for.

Video of the Day: Don't use baby leashes {Gadling}

Aug 23rd 2011 11:18AM My youngest brother required a leash on occasion. He was a hyper toddler (dislocated his hip climbing out of the crib before he could walk, in the pasture patting cow legs, climbing onto the top of the fridge and drinking the vinegar stored there to projectile vomit all over the kitchen, etc) prone to getting into trouble despite 3 people watching him nearly constantly. Giving us the slip was his favourite sport. Mom had two older kids, and neither of us were like this, thus we were not put on a leash. But my brother likely would not have survived otherwise. As an adult, he has not resented it one bit.

Granted, dragging your kid along like in the video is a bit dumb, but in a crowd, kids get lost easily.

Syria unrest: will there be another massacre in Hama? {Gadling}

May 11th 2011 1:21PM Thank you so much for giving us an insight beyond the official story - or the media hype.

Love in Venice: how a grumpy gondolier helped show me the heart of his city {Gadling}

May 3rd 2011 11:56AM Great tale! It felt like I was there. Nicely written.

Apr 25th 2011 12:22PM Funny parallel - I lived along the Alaska Highway (in Canada) as a kid, and now visit Malaysia (as well as many other spots) nearly yearly. Looking forward to insights and exciting tales!

Will Japan's nuclear woes dampen electric vehicle enthusiasm? {Autoblog}

Mar 27th 2011 2:05AM A power plant at peak efficiency is around 35% BEFORE transmission and conversion. An ICE around 28%. Of course if using coal or gas fired plants as most are now, we also need to factor in the drilling or mining costs and fuel transportation costs. Then we have the costs (in energy and pollution) of making the batteries, and recycling of them.

I'm not saying electricity couldn't be one answer among many, but presently it doesn't seem to come out ahead in the bigger picture.

Rumormill: 2012 BMW M5 to get manual tranny in U.S. {Autoblog}

Mar 25th 2011 1:58PM Have driven the C6 Vette with the shocks as well as the Ferrari 458 and Audi TT. Have to say I'm not terribly impressed. Good yes, but not as good as the Ferrari F355 with mechnically adjusted shocks. There is a gear on top of each shock that controls orifice size based on inputs processed by a dedicated ECU. It's ability to soak up crappy roads in comfort mode is just uncanny for something so sporty, and yet it never wallows or bottoms out. In sport mode, it firms up markedly, but not to the point where the car becomes unusable.

I mention this simply because magnetorheological are only one of many ways to skin a cat, and that sometimes the new stuff is just new stuff, and not always better.

Alaskan woman kicked by moose while trying to pet it {Gadling}

Mar 15th 2011 12:14PM I lived in a mountain tourist town inside a national park for a number of years. People were always getting stomped by the wildlife that would wander through town periodically. Usually while trying to pet them or stand close and have their picture taken with them. These are wild animals - not a petting farm or zoo exhibits or a Disney set. Some people would get seriously injured, and others killed.

Nothing quite rams this home like being late for work because you can't leave the house due to an elk deciding it wants to eat the bushes by your front porch. Any attempt to get past usually ends with a charge where you scramble madly back inside and your house possibly gets damaged by the antlers.

This Is Just To Say, An Editor's Goodbye {Luxist}

Mar 13th 2011 12:50PM Deidre,

Thank you for the tours of lifestyles we might otherwise never encounter. And thank you for giving the site a personal touch without being heavy handed about it.

Best wishes for wherever you land. May it be on a private jet with a glass of champagne in hand!
