My parents flew back-and-forth to Italy a lot when I was a kid, and my parents would always be on separate planes for exactly the same reason. It's not screwed-up; it's called looking out for your kids.

I at least give the kid credit for what seemed to me to be a thoughtful, sincere apology. Buck, if you're reading this ... we all screw up. The important thing is that you now KNOW you screwed up. You learned from this.

The poor urban kids are getting bombarded onstantly with images and messages glorifying the many ways which they'll get to spend their millions once they become ... rap stars or NBA players. Problem: if you neglect school and work and in fact become one of the 99.999999% of those same kids that DOESN'T go platinum or play for the Knicks, you're screwed. Nobody's telling them that. If you get pulled over with coke and a loaded nine in the car, the record companies or the front office won't be sending a lawyer with the cash for bail. Nobody's telling them that, either. Kids ... the work comes first, then the prize. So for now, forget the two-hundred-dollar bottles of champaigne ... forget the "crib" ... forget the "imp my ride" ... Stay in school and get a job.
