Iowa School Principal Delivers Birthday Spankings to Students {ParentDish}

May 28th 2011 9:38AM That kind of "paddling" is a carry-over from distant times in schools. Not a good idea these days--considering the rush to sue everybody in sight, but I can kinda understand the conservative folks in an easy-going place like Iowa being a bit slow on getting the message. They mean no harm and don't expect others to take it as seriously as so many people who are happy to do so in their wild-eyed eagerness. You can bet most kids at that school have long ago accepted this guy as a relic of the past and don't go running home to Mom for everything.

Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding Dress and What Else to Watch For on April 29! {AOL Royal Wedding}

Apr 27th 2011 8:38AM Most people spend at least part of their lives in La La Land, and this is just the ultimate expression of it. I get a laugh out of the people who say that the money spent here could be used for something more important--like feeding the poor, education, etc. The unvarnished truth is that the money wouldn't be spent on those things in any case.

SmackDown: Should Teachers Be Allowed to Blog About Their Students? {ParentDish}

Feb 15th 2011 8:10PM I'm a retired teacher from her district--Central Bucks. Great school district. Not happy with the profanity, but she will not be fired as she has the right to say what she wants as long she doesn't name names--the same as the kids who get on line and blog. If you're upset with her or public education in general, the place to start improvements is at home, and the main reason for CB being a great school district is because most of the parents send their kids here ready for school. People move here and pay these God-awful taxes because they know their kids have a better chance of getting a decent education than in many places. Same goes for most of the surrounding districts.

Silver Dollar Sets New World Record {Luxist}

May 21st 2010 3:21PM Let's say they worked 10 hours on Oct. 15, 1794 and turned out 1758 dollars, that would be about one every 20 seconds. Possible that they had more than one press. If not, that hand- screwed press would have had to be smokin'.

Is This 'Single Ladies' Video Too Hot for Tots? {ParentDish}

May 13th 2010 3:07PM These are 7 year old girls dancing a dance designed for older girls. It's a bit over the top, but in my mind that's about it. If the moves and costumes get you deeply excited in any way--in this case morally--then you might want to ask yourself why you are so aroused while you're on the way to expressing outrage and saving society from itself. . . .

Donovan McNabb Traded to Redskins {Fanhouse NFL Blog}

Apr 5th 2010 5:24AM Finally! Now I don't have to worry about which McNabb will show up for the game. He will probably have a final, one-year burst of success as a 'Skin as a matter of pride and then fade into oblivion. Meanwhile, everyone in the league knows that all you have to do is put pressure on the heavy, old guy and he will absolutely fold. He may be a "class" guy, but that doesn't win football games against anyone who is good. I don't expect the Eagles will do a whole lot in any case as Reid fiddles around in preseason games trying out new guys and then historically gets off to a slow start in regular season and has to play catch-up. Get the boos ready, people!

Brianne Matthews: Of Softball, Sorrow {Fanhouse Main}

Mar 12th 2010 11:59AM Many people don't realize what serious depression really is--as in bi-polar depression. They say, "Oh, get over it. Go outside and work it off. If you had something to do you wouldn't have time to be depressed." Or, "Let up on the child; she's under too much pressure," etc. The fact is that it's a chemical problem in the brain that you're born with, and there ain't nothin' you can do to cure it. All you can do is try some modern meds (don't always work) and hover over the poor thing and hope he/she doesn't go off the deep end when you're not looking--like my daughter did. . . .

Team Canada Defeats Team USA, Wins Gold Medal in Men's Hockey {Fanhouse Olympics Blog}

Mar 1st 2010 7:37AM Love to have seen the USA win, but the bigger picture is that it's important to keep the Canadians happy. Where else ya gonna get friends like that on our northern border?

Washington Portrait, Once Ignored, Now Up For Auction {Luxist}

Feb 21st 2010 5:56AM With respect to getting "an honest appraisal," it depends on whom you ask. One good way to get a realistic idea of what something is really worth is to ask how much someone who is interested in the item would give you for an item if they had the money. Stuff is often not worth what you would like it to be in your fantasy.

Canada Shaming Itself at Stormy Olympics {Fanhouse Olympics Blog}

Feb 16th 2010 3:14PM Wow. Nasty article. I can be as critical as the next guy--maybe more so, but I'd say ol' Jay went over the top on this one. Even the morally superior Canadians (my words) can slip up once in a while. "Own the podium?" That is laughable, but give the poor souls a break.
