Louisiana Restaurants Steaming Over Raw Oyster Ban {Digital City Blog}

Nov 12th 2009 9:08AM My father died from eating raw oysters 2 years ago. The problem is that the average consumer is not aware that oysters are potentially deadly and at risk individuals do not always know that they are considered at risk. My father was not aware that he was considered at a higher risk to eat raw oysters. He did not have any physical symptoms or illness that would have lead him to believe there was a problem. In addition, it is not common knowledge that raw oysters can lead to flesh eating bacteria which once in the bloodstream has a greater than 50% chance of death. FDA needs to take action to protect consumers.

If we know that in 2010, 15 people will die from eating raw oysters, and we also know there is a proven method to prevent this from happening, to do anything less is irresponsible. California already has passed state law that requires oysters to be post-harvest processed and they have had ZERO deaths since that time. We can't compare economics to human life on this issue. I don't think paying an extra $1.00 - $1.50 a dozen for oysters is too much to ask to save 15 people's lives a year.

Warm Weather And Raw Oysters Don't Mix {Luxist}

Nov 11th 2009 1:45PM I would rather kill the raw oyster than have the raw oyster kill ME! Seriously, I think some priorities are entirely out of line here. It is proven that 15 people die a year from eating raw oysters, and there is a proven method of making raw oysters safe for consumption. However, the oyster industry is screaming that it will affect them economically.

Are we really arguing that economics is more important than the lives of 15 people each year?

My father was one of those 15 people that died in 2007 from eating raw oysters. Seriously... is money worth more than human life? Is that honestly what people are claiming?

California passed a state law to protect consumers from eating raw oysters and since they have done that ZERO individuals have died. It is proven that it is possible to make raw oysters safe for all consumers.

Stop blaming the victims and start putting the blame where it belongs -- on the contaminated oysters!

Make our oysters safe!!!

FDA Oyster Ban Has Louisiana Fuming {Slashfood}

Oct 31st 2009 9:37AM What about how horrible it is for the people who get sick and die from eating UNSAFE raw oysters unknowningly?

The oyster and restaurant industry want to talk about how people should know better if they are sick. Well, the fact is … they don’t know. Actually, many people who are considered at high risk from eating raw oysters don’t even know they are at risk, such as individuals with diabetes who have not yet been diagnosed or those with liver problems that are undiagnosed.

I can tell you from personal experience — my father died from eating raw oysters 2 years ago. My family had no idea that eating raw oysters had the potential to kill an individual, nor did we know that he was an at risk individual — nor did he. He ate raw oysters to celebrate his birthday and ended up dying from that meal.

FDA needs to do something about this and the oyster and restaurant industry need to stop thinking about just the bottom line and dollars and cents and start thinking about the safety of consumers and human lives.

Oyster Harvesters Oppose Planned Seasonal Ban on Live Oysters {Slashfood}

Oct 21st 2009 10:09AM Blaming the victim for their own death is ridiculous. The oysters are not safe to eat and people are not aware that they can kill you. My father did not choose to die from eating raw oysters -- he did not KNOW that he might be at risk. How many people with diabetes are not aware? How many people in risk groups like liver disease are not aware? The oyster industry is more concerned about their MONEY than keeping people safe. Oysters can be made safe --- the processes are in place and are viable options -- of course FDA should require food to be safe.
