MacBook Air gets the unboxing treatment {Engadget}
Jan 31st 2008 5:48PM I don’t quite get the hatred that a lot of people have towards the Air. While I would like a bigger HDD, pretty much nothing else bothers me.
I’m a professional engineer, working in a research lab, so I’m assuming that I work my computers as hard as anyone else. That said, everything is on the netowork. I haven’t used my DVD drive in 6 months. I know this, because it broke 6 months ago and haven’t felt the need to fix it. I plug my iPhone in to sync and very occasionally find someone who wants to give me data on a USB drive, but the Air can handle these situations with no problem. I’ve stopped carrying my extra batteries in my laptop bag because they just weigh me down and I very rarely needed extra juice.
I’m not saying that the Air is for everyone. But really, some people don’t need 8 USB devices plugged into their computer all the time and aren’t burning DVDs on the road while carrying 15 lbs in batteries because it’s been a month since they’ve seen an internet cafe with a spare power outlet. (Hint: a 3 outlet splitter costs and weighs a lot less than an extra battery.)
Apple has created the sports car of notebooks; a single purpose machine that is very good at doing what it does and that compromises in other aspects. But I think that the Air is for the cutting edge user, not the person still burning CDs.
