Jun 18th 2010 3:06PM This may work where you live, but here you get the bare bones minimum to shut you up and get you out the door. I spent 4 years without insurance and without a proper diagnosis, and had to use the ER "trick" just to get excruciating pain relieved... but that was it. As soon as they note the "uninsured" box is checked on your chart, they shoo you out the door with a day's pain meds or antibiotics and leave you to fend for yourself past that. There wasn't a single doctor here that would take me as a patient without a huge chunk of cash up front or insurance. Yes, you can go to (and I did go) to the "free clinic" that is available for minor ailments, but when dealing with majorly complicated illnesses where specialists are required, you're SOL. Luckily, we have a governor who implemented a healthcare system to catch the in-betweens (those who don't qualify for Medicaid, but can't afford insurance), and was able to get the care I had so desperately needed. As for the comment about the unemployed, etc... she could have been in a similar situation to mine and just had crappy luck. I was in college full time, working part time at a place that didn't offer insurance when I fell ill, and progressively got worse and worse to the point where I had to drop out of school and quit work. My mother had to literally hold my head up to feed me at one point and carry me to the bathroom. So, don't judge what you don't know anything about!
