Jan 19th 2010 8:48PM I'm pretty sure that part about the punt is flat wrong. The punt doesn't "help[] redistribute the pressure to keep the bottle from exploding." It is, rather, designed to focus the inevitable explosions in a particular direction. For much of its aging -- prior to riddling -- champagne is stored stacked bottle to bottle by the thousands. If a bottle explodes, the chain reaction can take down thousands of bottles. But if the explosion just shoots out the bottom, the most damage it does is to the few bottles that are stacked directly in the path of the explosion. So the punt is actually designed to be weaker than the rest of the bottle.

Dec 7th 2009 6:46PM Diedre, I think you're glossing over the most important part of this story, which is that someone -- anyone -- is voluntarily moving from Manhattan Beach to Tarzana. Especially someone who made more than $14mil last year just in his NBA salary (not including his endorsements), and is scheduled to make at least $11mil this year.
Tarzana is not where one chooses to live, it is where one has to live when one's options have been stripped.
That said, I kinda like the fact that a guy who's made $10mil or more a year since 2002 was living in a $2.4mil place.
