Feb 28th 2012 3:40PM if you can afford 3 million to buy the house, energy costs shoul be far down the list of negative features
Aug 3rd 2011 1:03AM changing the location of the dishwasher is not an easy nor inexpensive thing to do. the D/W is definitly 18"wide and turning it sideways will leave the sides open and dangerous. side panels are available but costly. putting a full size dishwasher is also expensive as you still would need side panels and the under counter space would be lost also. live with what they got they wouldn't have many dishes anyway and if they do, run a couple of loads a day. they use minimal hot water and the electricity usage is far less than heating hot water for the sink. as i said above put an island in the kitchen put a wall cabinet or 2 under the top or 1 cabinet and a set of drawers for the silverware -a junk drawer every kitchen needs 1 another drawer for kitchen utensils that are thin and a deep drawer for ladels and large utensils. turn it 90 degrees from the cabinet and put a false cabinet front on it. you add 2 cabinets or 1 cabinet and 1 drawer cabinet which uses a lot of wasted space. if feasible put a tv on the wall by the D/W. have the counter top edges cut at 45 degree angle for safety and run an inlaid piece of formica to customize a little. the you can move the D/W to the other side of the sink if you wish and make a cookie sheet /tray holer where the old D/W was. hell put a full size D/W next to the sink. you'll lose 1 cabinet but gain at least 3. cost now approx $2-2,500 depending on your tastes. but don't get the cheapest things out there make an investment it will pay for itself over time
Aug 2nd 2011 8:33PM i made my comments on the premise this was a rental apartment. if it is their own home, there would be different installation options
Aug 2nd 2011 8:16PM there is nothing wrong with this kitchen. if it were mine i would hang pots and pans from the ceiling and put a picture on the dead wall. a young married couple doesn't need a large garbage pail. get a small one and hang it from an inside cabinet door or under the sink. throw out the table and chairs and install an island put 2 cabinets 12 or 18" wide depending on the size of the kithen put a to 6" wider than the cabinets and use it for meals ( put the whole extra space on the side where the cabinet doors are and a piece of good plywood on the back of the cabinets stain to match. secure the cabinets to the floor with some nice L brackets to prevent tipping. the dishwasher obviously is an 18" apartment unit which is no problem loading or unloading from the side. on the counter if size permitsput a cooking utensil holder or those flour and sugar things. the stool i would put in a corner of the unseen part of the kitchen, there must be some kind of corner there. i used 12" cabines in my peninsula and an 18" formica top angled at the corners and though we now have granite , formica worked well until we decided to stay in our home. cost $1,200 depending on your taste, but remember when you move you either leave your improvements or repair the holes you made and repaint the room.
Aug 2nd 2011 7:59PM there is nothing wrong with this kitchen. it is what the couple did with it that is the problem.move the garbage pail and stool and you can use the D/W. a young couple should be able to use a small garbage pail that can be mounted inside a cabinet door under the sink. hang your pots and pans from the ceiling not on the wall that will make a small area even more crowded looking. put a small island in the kitchen with a cabinet or 2 under only 12" wide and an 18-20" top which can be used for meals and sugarbowl or cooking utensils. it's obvious the dishwasher is only 18" wide so loading and unloading from the side is not that big a deal. put the stool in a corner of the kitchen that the photo doesn't show. that's just off the top of my head if i saw the complete kitchen i could perhaps make different changes. cost? maybe $1,200 for materials . i would use a couple of nice "L" brackets to secure the cabinet to the floor
