Rotate Your Owl {Pawnation OLD}
Aug 21st 2011 2:21AM There are 3 different types of owls in the area where we live: Great Horned, Barred & Eastern Screech. My husband was working on a repair on the gutters when an Eastern Screech-Owl divebombed him - Twice! I'm soooo thankful it wasn't one of the big ones! The owl left scratches on the back of his neck.
There were no nests up under the eaves. Never did figure out the why of the attack. Might have been a bad feather day? At least it wasn't a red-shouldered hawk. When Mama hawk shoved the wee ones out of the nest, one of them took up residence right in back of the house. He (or she) was having a really tough time foraging. Checked with the county - they said it would be okay to put out raw red meat for him/her. Put a piece of wood on top of the clothes line pole big enough for him/her to land on & eat. It worked!! There are still hawks in the area.

Living On Electric Avenue Diary: Day Five {Translogic}
Aug 9th 2010 12:26AM Have you considered the cost of electricity prices soaring to 'luxury' status with the advent of the cap-and-trade? Ahh, well, it will only affect approximately 50% of the US. (That's the portion of electrical plants using coal). Or, with the 'Shut 'er Down Now' mentality just leave that 50% with ANY electricity? Will our government use the money received from the cap-and-trade to invest in new infrastructure or will it be dumped straight into government coffers for 'other' spending? And the EPA is worried about farm dust?
Nude Reebok Billboard a 'Deadly Distraction,' Drivers Claim {Stylelist (Main)}
Aug 7th 2010 10:55PM I saw a billboard in Frankfurt, Germany in the late 80's.
It was a large photo of a nude man on a motorcycle.
I had to circle back since I definitely missed the caption:
'If nothing else, wear your helmet'.
Beware of door-to-door magazine sales scams, BBB chapter warns {WalletPop}
Jul 29th 2010 12:29AM Just another reason for rural living. If a sales person chooses to bypass the 'Private Property, No Trespassing' sign (the security system will alert me when anything comes in) they will then meet up with the canine deterrent. I've not yet had a stranger get out of their vehicle when they reach the front of my home.
Actually, I think my sign is kinder than one I saw at a neighboring (about 2 miles down the road) home: "Prayer is the best way to meet the Lord. Trespassing is faster."

Getting Teens to Talk (Eww) About Sex {ParentDish}
Jun 20th 2010 1:28AM The advice I received from a pediatrician was 'Answer only the question asked. Let the children set the parameters. When your child wants to know more, they'll ask. Don't go overboard with too much information.' To prepare for questions, I bought a book called 'Where Did I Come From'. So, I'm prepared, right? OK, the time comes when my daughter is in 2nd grade. Here we go - she's sitting in my lap, we're reading the book together. So far, so good!
We get to the part about Mom and Dad making love ...... she pops out with ' Mom, I know that. It's called 'humping' Mentally, I fell off the chair! However, I managed to ask where did you hear that? Seems a 4th grade neighbor girl told her that's what sex is called...... Whew, deep breath and divert to an explanation of the difference between 'humping' and 'making love'.

Agree, Celine Dion is great. However, I still prefer the version of 'Power of Love' by Jennifer Rush.

Apr 25th 2010 2:08AM While living in Germany (I was a young kid) our White German Shepherd, Slyvia, let a burglar enter our home while we were all out one evening. The man was cowering in a corner of the dining room when we returned. Sylvia let him come on in. She just wouldn't let him leave again.
